Last night we had a situation at one of our karaoke contests. A judge who asked us if he could be a judge as they were trying to find 3 judges had cleary voted unfairly.
Here's what happened. He scored one girl higher than all the rest. This girl was good.. But she wasn't as good as some of the others.
High score is calculated by 3 catagories. After all three catagories are added up, highest possible score totaled is 50.
...All the girls got around 20-25 points total from this judge. Where the other judges gave 38-48 points per person. One contestant for instance got a 0 (zero) by the unfair judge on audience response when she practically had the house come down in uproar. The other two judges gave her the maximum score for that catagory. Why a zero? The other "one" got a full score when her song was slow and not so good.
So here's what happened in the end. It came down to 2 girls. One who was White and one who was African American. One of the girls got from the unfair judge a high score of 49. Other judges scored in the high 30 to mid 40's. The other girl sang (and nailed her song completely). This judge gave her a 22 and the other two judges gave her 46-48 each.
The girl who wasn't as good won because of the judge who scored everyone low but her. This judge was of same race as the winner.
So what is your opinion? Is this a case of Racism? Should this judges vote had been thrown away. Did the girl win fairly? We are trying to run an honest contest and by giving us your opinion, it helps us with future contests.

HUm, well it might have been but it doesnt matter. Being racist isnt against the law, its wrong, but it will always be around. life isnt fair. never will be.
Hard to say if it was racism. After all, when you judge you're basing it on YOUR taste/opinion. I know that when my family and I watch shows like American Idol, or the other talent based ones we all differ in opinion as far as who had a great voice and who didn't. and who was pretty and who wasn't.
BTW, thank you for standing up against racism!
This is the case of IT LOOKS LIKE A DUCK, IT WALKS LIKE A DUCK, IT QUACKS LIKE A DUCK, so it must be a duck (or a racist judge in this case). In this case, based on your depiction, which I trust, the judge sounds biased and race likely influenced his choice. The only problem is proving the judge's motives for judging as he did. That's where the problem lies.
Nobody is completely without bias, whether that bias has to do with race, gender, or other factors. However, if somebody is so blatantly biased that it stands out in everybody's mind as being obvious, that person probably has no business being a judge and should not be picked for the next round.
wow.. are there any comments?
