I don't play bass "correctly". I've never had a lesson in my life. I sang bass in church and show choir for about six years and have played bass in several bands. I reiterate... I don't play bass "correctly". I have a fair amount of music theory under my belt, but alas, when the music begins, the rules go out the window and the gut sings through my hands. Many listeners over the years have said that the way I play is "unique" and that they don't mind it that I don't play just like the record. One astute observer commented several times that it seems that I just close my eyes and I walk through my heaven. I play from a gut level. I don't give a damn how many strings it has. The only bass I have right now is a seven string. I prefer fretless bass. I taught myself on a fretless. I feel the upright to the depths of my soul... I play it from a gut level, unadulterated, and prefer it because I am obligated to choose, out of all the notes I might play on an electric, only the BEST ones to play on an upright. It is an exercise in efficiency and elegant simplicity. I have, in the past, been complimented on my intonation. I reiterate... I don't play bass correctly. I don't even know if I 'm good enough to play with you. I am, however, thoroughly sick and tired of trying to find musicians who are a)skilled; b)not legends in their own minds; and c) serious enough to even make an initial contact and/or see past my age. Just some food for thought. Peace, Tristan
