Wind Wolves Perserve
Location:
16019 Maricopa Highway,
Bakersfield, CA 93311
Something that I've heard so many times is that there is nothing "outdoorsy" to do in the valley. People always feel like they have to head out to the Sequoias or Kernville to get close to nature. Its much closer and no winding road is neccesary. Just head out the The Wind Wolves Perserve off the 166 near Maricopa. This 97,000 acre wildlife refuge is at this point pretty unknown which means you can enjoy solitude while "escaping". I've been out there a few times hiking as part of my exercise regimine and have had a blast every time. With all the rain over the last couple months, the mountains are bright green and give a great backdrop to the trip. 8 comments from 6 users

People always complain but don't really take the time to find natures beauty around us. I know my buddy Julie loves to go up the hill .. ummm what's it called? I think it's on the way up to Hart Park.. just above B.C.??? anyways... nature is all around us. I'd never heard of the Wind Wolves Preserves. Thanks for letting us know! posted by

Wind Wolves is an amazing place to visit that is indeed very very close to home. My wife worked as a Naturalist, and later the Office Manager, for several years at the preserve and we loved every minute of it. Sometimes, part of her job would be to "Patroll the Grounds" during hunting season. So we would spend all weekend up there patrolling and had full access to the 97,000 acres! Jumped in our 4 wheel drive 4-Runner and explored and patrolled all day. It was great fun. We even found a rock site with indian paintings that we later found out date back to the Chumash. I could go on and on, but I do encourage people to check it out. It's only a 45 minute drive and you feel as if you are in a completetly different world. Cool stuff-- posted by

Funny you guys would mention all this. I was online looking for maps to Coso in Cantil for the petraglyths and on to red rock canyon. over my China Lake. I'd like to take my ten year old to these places just to hear him whine! It's fun. "Dad this is boring, Dad I'm hungry,..etc" Great fun! But honestly, I think those place here in Kern County are pretty cool. posted by
