A Shift in the Fabric of Bakerality
And yes, I do plan on copywriting "Bakerality"... soon. Until then, here are some thoughts, deductions and generalizations from perhaps the only truly "out" gay man in Bakersfield.

GayinOh8 - > A Shift in the Fabric of Bakerality -> Help Educate an Old Guy
Help Educate an Old Guy

Upon becoming a member of this site I have become accutely aware of a "look" or "style" shared by many ladies who are also members here. It includes:

  1. 40's style hair
  2. 40's inspired makeup and dress
  3. Flower over one ear
  4. More tattoos than is reasonably attractive on anyone (man or woman)

I noticed this same "look" on the cover of a few "alternative" magazines in a local store. The work of Albero Vargas comes to mind.

So- what is it all about? Does it have a name? Give an old, completely-out-of-touch guy a clue.

Many thanks in advance!

Hey I just wanted to say you're not the only gay man in Bakersfield. I just saw another one at the mall so there is at least TWO of you. (hahahah... ) Just kidding.

anyways... I have also noticed that style and was curious what it was called. I think of it as a "pin-up model" type of look. Didn't know it was called rockabilly. Interesting. Good to know!

But  the typical pin up didn't have tatt's usually the men that looked at them do however:)

Rockabilly is a style for men and women, as well as music too. It's a whole way of life for some. They have a festival every year in CA somewhere, called the Hootnanny (sp?) It's a mix of pin up types for the women and greaser types for the guys.

i love the style sooo much. it got popular in the late 90's I'd say. with big bad voodoo daddy. I mean there has always been rockabilly's but just more came in the 90's  I love the hair i love the clothes, i love the tattoos, i love the music , the cars.i love it all. There's nothing more fun that dressing up and going to a social distortion , lol and getting drunk.

I think the whole rockabilly subculture sort of made its comeback in the early 80s, actually! But yes, the style does seem to be pretty popular in Bakersfield. I do the 40's style hair and the flower thing a lot, but I have zero tattoos and the boring "standard" ear piercings... I don't think I qualify ;D

SamG you are as I've said before unique, you create your own style.

Hootananny  reminds me of the old days of folk muisc.

I've always loved the look and style of the 30's and 40's have seen I was a teen in the 70's. A little while before it became popular. But if it's good it never goes way.
