A Shift in the Fabric of Bakerality
And yes, I do plan on copywriting "Bakerality"... soon. Until then, here are some thoughts, deductions and generalizations from perhaps the only truly "out" gay man in Bakersfield.

GayinOh8 - > A Shift in the Fabric of Bakerality -> Remember This Face!
Remember This Face!

Look at this picture. Committ it to memory.

This is the face of the enemy.

As many of you already know, Ann Barnett has put her foot down and decided (on behalf of all Kern County residents- she is an elected official, you know) that if gays are allowed to marry, by gosh NO ONE will. Well, not in her office anyway. Can't you almost here the tantrum now? Sadly, she also controls who has the ability to officiate over ANY weddings. Quite literally, this person has the ability to decide who can get married and who cannot. Apparently California Law stops at the Kern County border.

Yes, it certainly does look like that, doesn't it, Annie?

I guess some have determined that the Bakersfield-based company, Bolthouse Farms is supporting the wrong side, and so there's been a talk of a boycott.  Personally, I love Bolthouse Farms products, so until somebody can prove that they hate gays, and that their hatred of gays is behind their donation to put the issue back in the ballot box, I'm going to keep drinking their juice.

Here's what Bakosphere reported:

The Bilerico Project

is urging a boycott of Bolthouse Farms products.

Personally I could care less whether gays marry or not but people do not learn from their past. When you prohibit people from doing something it makes them want it even more. Besides everyone has this romanticized view of democracy! This country is not a democracy, its a republic! It doesnt matter what the majority want, it's what the person voted in office wants. I have no problem with Barnett saying she doesnt believe in it and therefore is not going to authorize it, which by law, it is her discretion. That im cool because in a republic its not what we want its what she wants. If you dont like it, dont vote for her in the next election. However, when you try to bullshit the public you better expect shit back. She is not fooling nobody!

I agree with you Annie on the whole votes thing, the only instance where I can see it going against the current will of the people is if it is deemed unconstitutional (the ruling).

Annie- do you honestly believe that if people vote in favor of a law/amendment/proposition that it is "right". It was the opinion of the California Supreme Court that Prop 22 was UNCONSTITUTIONAL. It violates my consitutional rights as an American Citizen. So by your logic, they should have just left it alone. Screw the Consitution. Hell, screw the 19th Amendment while we're at it.

Annie, I understand and have tried to empathize with your repeated frustration over voting. Can I suggest getting involved and figuring out a way to change a system you see as flawed?

drblt- you certainly do cover your bases. Your writing paints you as someone riding the fence on this issue, shrugging your shouldres and asking, "What's the big deal?" You're a learned man- WAY more than I am- so I'm thinking you can figure this out on your own.

Women probably shouldn't be allowed to vote because they usually vote liberal. so. if like to appeal the 19th amandment. (mostly kidding)

You are only OK with this gayin08 cause it benefits you , what happens if something YOU VOTED ON gets puts into place, will you still hold the same attitude.

just wondering. LIKE lets ban guns here? are you OK with that? or banning the 1st amendent?

but, why do u wanna get married in the court house? anyways who cares about her. why complain, just get married somewhere else.

I'm simply trying to point out that all civil liberties have come about after great strife and struggle.

No, Annie. I'm OK with this because in my heart it is the right thing for ALL people, not just me. And the BIG difference I'm trying desperately to illuminate is that the process of making a law isn't as simple and finite as voting one time and forgetting about it. The process, both State and Federal has checks and balances to ensure that what we are voting on is really in our best interests. Think of the State Supreme Court like parents of oft-times unruley teenagers: We may stomp our feet and throw a tantrum but that does not mean that what we want is good for us as a whole. We The People are a passionate bunch (thankfully so). It is the role of the Supremem Court to seperate the passion from the reason in creating laws. Feeling strongly about something does not make it right. A gazillion votes does not make something right.

The "law" is a living thing that changes and grows as our world changes and grows. These changes are difficult, often painful, but necessary if we are to better ourselves as a nation.

Let's not get into these issues until November, ok? Hehehehehehehehe.....

This has never been about wanting to get officiated at the court house. This is about getting the same rights, in the same fashion as you would expect. I have plenty of romance at home, I don't need a "quickie" in the Clerks Office to get me off. I want what everyone wants. Straight answers from the broad who has suddenly up and changed how things are to be done. As a publicly-ellected official she has an obligation to ALL of the people she represents (not just the ones who voted for her) to provide truthful reasons for her decisions, and not to evade question or speculation. I believe enough doubt has been cast over her recent decicions to warrant further investigation.

" but you AND I don't have all the info."  -Well put, and the very reason for the public outcry.

Do you really believe she sought legal protection because she thought the Lake Isabella Dam of gay marriage was gonna give and flood her offices with doe-eyed same-sex couples? Really? Just how many was she expecting? Seriously- how many gay couples do people think are gonna be waiting at the doors come the 17th?

I think it's funny that when someone AGREES with another's opinion then it's "ROCK ON! You're entitled to your opinion." But when we disagree it's. "You don't have to be so mean...." hahahahahha I LOVE HUMAN NATURE!

Great topic, gay!!! I love reading people's passionate comments about subjects like this even when I disagree. They're entertaining and usually informative on both sides of the issue!!
