A Shift in the Fabric of Bakerality
And yes, I do plan on copywriting "Bakerality"... soon. Until then, here are some thoughts, deductions and generalizations from perhaps the only truly "out" gay man in Bakersfield.

What If.........

I've really got to pull myself together. This whole Prop 22 / Ann Barnett / Jean Fuller has begun to take more of my time, passion and energy than I thought I'd care to give it. But some comments have continued to needle me in unsettling ways. They got me to thinking- you guessed it- what if we all got our way? Either in tandem or as seperate issues.

What if gay marriage were here to stay, upheld by the CSSC? If the November vote kept gay marriage, what would happen? What would you do personally? What would happen to the county? Thet State?

OR

What would happen if same-sex marriage were voted out of law in November?

OR

As one person suggested, why don't the gays just go somewhere else and get married? For that matter (and taking that logic to it's ultimate conclusion) why don't the gays simply leave Kern altogether?

What about the Jews, or blacks or hispanics?

Describe a Kern County to me where everyone get's their way. Isn't that the essence of a kind of "Bakotopia"?

Well "Bakotopia"  I think not.  Local bloggers' squabbles have been making national news .... I would link something from CNN but my hubby made it into the L.A. times :0)  http://www.latimes.com/news...

I think if passed we wouldn't really care one way or another 0h8, I know i wouldn't.   haha you might change your mind later on down the road when a  spouse sues your ass for  divorce and wantys alimoney;)

joe- I would welcome the chance to have a really unhappy divorce.

And I think you're right- If gay marriage were to pass (and I do not have high aspirations on that matter) I think it would simply be business as usual after a few days, perhaps weeks. But then, what else would there be for the Far Right and religious extremists to go on about? Gay rights are the last rights to be fought over, aren't they? Isn't everyone else just about covered?

What happens if it was kept into law? (it wouldn't effect me, i wouldn't care, because the people voted for it)

What would happen if same-sex marriage were voted out of law in November? (if the people voted it out, then they did)

As one person suggested, why don't the gays just go somewhere else and get married? For that matter (and taking that logic to it's ultimate conclusion) why don't the gays simply leave Kern altogether? (we all know this was my statement, Don't go extreme and say i meant gays should leave, that's not what i said. Also why does it matter where you get married i thought the point was to be together forever)

What about the Jews, or blacks or Hispanics? (what about them? why leave out white people. This isn't about race.)

Describe a Kern County to me where everyone gets their way. Isn't that the essence of a kind of "Bakotopia"?

(this will never happen, someone will always be mad, there is no compromise)

Annie- It was not my intention to throw you under the bus or call you out. I know you didn't make such an extreme statement. Give this kid alittle credit, eh? But your statement did get me thinking about some of the other boneheads out there that would take your statement to it's extreme conclusion- don't just leave to get married, just leave.

So please, I wasn't doggin' on you, but merely theorizing an extreme reaction which, in this county, isn't all that extreme for some (see AllRed and MurphysLaw posts at bakersfield.com). And if it's reasonable for some to expect gays to up and leave, why not the Jews and the Blacks and the Hispanics? That's what I mean by taking your simple statement to an extreme. Not that you did. But someone could.

What matters is that I should be able to get married in my own city- or at least my own County. I live here, too, right? It's like saying everyone can grocery shop here except the gays- they have to go out of the county. What would the big deal be? It's the same groceries- just from a different location, right?

And I know the Utopian society I allude to will never happen. Because in one we'd have a million different nations each comprised of a single race, color, religion... you name it.

HAHAHA no no i knew you wernt doggin me, i swear. my tone *of thinking* wasn't mad or angry or anything. I type like i talk i guess and unless you can hear me you dont really know, i might have to change it.

Of course there are people out there that don't like gay people. Of course there are gays that don't like straight people, Of course there are blacks that don't like whites, whites that don't like blacks, Mexican that don't like gays, gays that don't like Mexicans, etc etc etc, it goes on and on. There has always and will always be racism and hate. No matter how many laws you pass against it. It wont change a thing. Its sad but its true. We all would love to live in a world without war, hate, and unkind things. But we don't. I try and not bother others and not allow others to bother me. Especially government because they feel they know how you should live and what you should except better than you. I understand that i have to live with people who believe different than me, and i do. I support your right to be a racist if you want to. Although i disagree. If someone doesn't like gay people then they don't, you really cant force it. I cant force gay men to like boobies, so lol. I want you to know that i do believe you have a right to life and happiness gay or straight, black or white. but will having a piece of paper make your life complete? is that all you want out of life, do you think there are more important things to fight for, i do. Only cause i think marriage is pretty much pointless. so i have to ask,

Why is it such a big deal? Is it that cause you cant marry the world doesn't think of you as a real person?

There are numerous legal protections that civil unions don't cover:

Portability- A civil union is only recognized in areas that have them whereas marriage is accepted globally.

Immigration- Married spouses can sponsor immediate families to legally immigrate to this country- for example a husban and wife can sponsor the husbands' elderly grandmother into the US to live with them for home care purposes. Civil unions do not allow sponsorship.

Medical Decision- As long as Stephen and I stay in California where we are Domestically Partnered we can make medical decision for the other in the event the other is incapacitated. In a few days he is going to NV for a conference and I'm going to WI to visit my parents. Should something happen to either of us we are SOL in doing anything about it. Married people can make medical decisions for their spouse pretty much globally without question.

Taxation- Spouses can "gift" to each other anything- homes or cars without paying taxes. If Stephen gives me a car (or anything over $10,000 in worth) I can be taxed on it. This also extends into rights of survivorship and inheritence.

I could go on and on......

Thanks for letting me give you some of the legalese that makes this so important.

After reading this discussion, all I remember was "BOOBIES!"

Alright, i can understand that i guess. Hopefully then everyone votes in favor of your situation so you can continue your plans on getting married.
