A Shift in the Fabric of Bakerality
And yes, I do plan on copywriting "Bakerality"... soon. Until then, here are some thoughts, deductions and generalizations from perhaps the only truly "out" gay man in Bakersfield.

What If.........

I've really got to pull myself together. This whole Prop 22 / Ann Barnett / Jean Fuller has begun to take more of my time, passion and energy than I thought I'd care to give it. But some comments have continued to needle me in unsettling ways. They got me to thinking- you guessed it- what if we all got our way? Either in tandem or as seperate issues.

What if gay marriage were here to stay, upheld by the CSSC? If the November vote kept gay marriage, what would happen? What would you do personally? What would happen to the county? Thet State?

OR

What would happen if same-sex marriage were voted out of law in November?

OR

As one person suggested, why don't the gays just go somewhere else and get married? For that matter (and taking that logic to it's ultimate conclusion) why don't the gays simply leave Kern altogether?

What about the Jews, or blacks or hispanics?

Describe a Kern County to me where everyone get's their way. Isn't that the essence of a kind of "Bakotopia"?

Ever been to Beaver Damn, Wis?  There's a sprawling community!  I think as more people from down south move here it will  be more culturally advanced, but I don't think by huge margins.

Being catered to is not exactly what I had in mind. And you're right: The culture here will never equate to that of larger cities. However I can attest to the fact that there are things to do- and some of them are even interesting. In the same week I saw Elton Joh in concert and met Carol Channing- at a museum! The cutlture here may not be as diverse and grand, but it does exist in small doses. After all, I just got back from New London Wisconsin with a population around 2000. By comparison, Bakersfield has plenty to see and do.

Well Bakersfield  won't cater too you I'm sorry,  so you may have to put up with it' sad to say. You can and welcome to try to change it all you want. I always wanted culture here and the only place you will find that here in the dairy section.

Good evening, Peeps! I returned from Wisconsin about 5 hours ago and I'm still beat, trying to catch up on some much-neglected stuff and all-around unmotivated to do more than watch TV.

In going over the last number of posts I can certainly appreciate how everyone is more-or-less able to express themselves without it becoming a cyber-throw down. And yeah- joe, my hackles did raise ever so slightly. You still seem to be under the impression that if there are greener pastures, why not go to them. The point is that no one should have to leave their home (regardless how long they've lived there or why they chose it) to achieve some sort of happiness. Stephen has lived here all his life- 56 years! why for goodness sake should he have to leave everything he knows and loves, his very family (son, DIL and 2 amazing grandsons)? Homes are made into happy places, not by having people leave, but by people staying and making it happen.

Don't get me wrong, I believe your intent is a good one. And I'm sure I sound a bit stubborn. But the very idea of turning tail is simply abhorent and cowardly. In truth, the real question for me is this: If I am perceived as not being happy in Bakersfield, what can Bakersfield do to make this a happier place? I think I'm already doing my part (above and beyond if you ask me). What is everyone else doing?

yep i listened until the went off today at 5:15.  By the way i didn't get to hear all of what Jazz said about the concert but  it was funny. I had the whole back row to myself pretty much, until he walked in with some blond.  he said in my seat,...technically speaking  well it was kind the communal seat. I was center   in that last row before the doors and with the light fadders and  audio board behind me. to the right a guy that looked like he was having some fit. Jazz was to the left with his  "Team Glock" shirt on. I never spoke to him hahha that would have been an interesting conversation. I wanted to ask: "so hey Jazz is the  cart label still there in the back of KNZR with my name  on it. Back there by the sound baffling?"  I'm just curious to find what all he said. He was all pissed that everyone wasn't being very very quiet and not talking their hats off for Ted version of the national anthem. I looked over and there he was(that's when I noticed him)  he had his hat off and was acting like  he was observing his moment of  silence. I think whooping and yelling is OK at a concert. Maybe they were expressing their  love of freedoms, or listening to a  talented  guy play his ax!. I think if at a ball game or somewhere somber or sober it's fine, great. But C'mon a rock concert? Rockers are naturally rebellious. I think they have the right to  yell and still have their hats on. Anyway. just wanted to share that moment of McKayness Annie

By the way I noticed he left and came back a few times, he mentioned he sat down i was on my feet the whole time rockin out!

Ralph Bailey brough up a  costly  situation to the table today about gays, gays in prison wanting to get married.  I think that MIGHT effect me, it's would be my tax dollars. I'm not all for that either sorry.

(hippies are the best at bitch fits and whining.) and i know you aren't really a hippie you are just sporting it in your name. *another useless group*

whoa there... simmer down apple annie "or what the hell ever". While I understand the point you are trying to make, it's hardly worth the bitchfest. I think the intent of my comment was clear.

and with that...I will leave this blog alone.

Alright, hippie*what the hell ever*chick, i donno the rest of your name and I'm not scrolling up THIS IS THE PROBLEM with America, everyone groups people, like you just did, instead of saying "and render unto gays/ lesbians what is their right under humanity." say this "and render unto PEOPLE what is their right under humanity." gay people aren't just GAY people they are PEOPLE, and this government loves to create animosity against groups, be it be blacks, against whites, Mexicans against whites, gays vs straights, and the other way around. not one race should have more rights than another. LIKE i wouldn't get financial aid because I'm white, but Mexicans, blacks, native Americans do. don't you see the bad place we are . Its because of pandering and such, no one is better than another, no one is more special than another All people were created equal right?no one is more intitled to something unless they work for it not just based on race, or sex, or sex pref, or whatever.

Contrary to what many of these (and other) comments seem to suggest, there are people here who care passionately about the outcome of the gay marriage issue. I can't say "oh, it doesn't affect me" because the new law has the potential to affect so many loved ones that I do feel some degree of connection. And even if that weren't the case, I feel so strongly about the issue that I imagine I would want to get involved anyway. I'll be extremely disheartened if the ban is upheld, and I know many others - gay and straight - who feel the same way.

Don't be discouraged yet :)

Also oh8 when you first came to bakotopia   you told us you were only here because of Stephen. Seriously  if you don't like it here why do you want to get married here? I'd hold out and get married where you truly want to be. Where ever that might be.
