Management? Band Management? Me?
Location:

Band management is serious business and apparently I have been voted into this business by some friends of mine. I am now band manager for Suck*ah Punch and I have no idea what the heck I am doing. I want to help them, lord knows they need to get more organized, but problem is I am not sure what to do. The only thing they have expressed to me is that they want to get shows, but that has proved challenging due to work. All the members work and getting them to agree is also an issue. I really just want to grab them and shake them ,but I don't see that helping any. I would like to get them to record a demo. Yes I know that costs money however they all have jobs so maybe if they pitched in and actually put some effort into it they could get their shit together and make a decent demo. They all help in putting the songs together, they all taught themselves to play, and they are fun to be with. Now if only I could figure out how to get them to get it all together so they can start playing shows. Oh and I need to get some pictures of them and fix their freakin myspace. Gah I hate being in charge...no I don't I really love it, but geeze it's a lot of work. 7 comments from 6 users

How FUN!!!! You'll do ok. Sometimes as an artist it's hard to promote yourself so them having you to help them will make a HUGE difference in their local music careers. HEY you should just book them then tell them they need to take the day off. PERIOD! LOL posted by

THAT IS BRILLIANT! :D Now to work on my people skills. lol. I tend to be a tad bit abrasive, but I think I can figure out how to be nice. posted by

For alot of artistis, self-promotion is hard so I agree with twinkie that this is a good thing. Hit up "Lucky's Pizza", they're easy to get booked with. And if you ever need promo pics, hit me up if you like my style. posted by

Hey! You think you're a bit abrasive. Every read how James Brown managed his folks. But it ain't so much gettin' abrasive as gettin' mature, mean what you say, and stick with it. Put that baritone in your voice and don't worry about being liked. You already are liked by them. And don't worry about being disliked. If thier immature (and they are) they'd use that to manipulate you. Sounds like you're letting these "friends" get you to manage them, and when you do, they put you on the cross. Tell them friendship is friendship and managing folks is manageing folks. You talk things over, but in the end, its your way or the hiway, or you hit the hiway. I had to learn all these things in working psychiatric units in my life. At first I couldn't ask a patient in a state hospital to mop a floor. Twenty years later, I'd simply say, so and so, I want you to mop the floor. I he or she doesn't want to do it, you got something to talk about. If they talk about it and still don't want to do it you tell them this will delay thier discharge from the hospital going from the ICU to the front unit. If you're friends don't want to "come under the rod" of your management, tell them this won't get them gigs. If they still refuse tell them they're not ready to be managed, and go back to being friends. posted by

American Studios has a deal. 10 hours for $650. Split that among the band and it's not so bad. 10 hours is more than enough time to record and mix a decent two song demo. If they're not Yes or Asia. posted by
