The Mean Bookstore Girl Strikes again

My blogs are a very on-again-off-again kind of thing. I'm liable to write about anything that strikes me at the time. One thing you can be sure of, however, is that if it's posted on here, it matters to me, and as such, what I have to say isn't always going to sit well with everyone who reads it. If you ever read anything here that offends you, I apologize for the offense, but I don't apologize for the saying. I'm also very happy to admit when I'm wrong, if you can convince me of it!

Happy trails!

Some of you out there in the Bakosphere aren't going to like my cartoon. Thing is,you don't have to. That's why it's on my blog. I even warn readers with a picture of a fire-breathing preacher and the blog's name: My Soap Box. Some of you, though, will appreciate it. I hope.

Last Friday evening, on our way to dinner with a friend, we drove by the intersection of California and Stockdale and I was happy to see the folks that are there every Friday protesting for peace are holding a "No on 8" rally. We honked and waved, and I was bemused to see a smallish contingent of "Yes on 8" people who appeared to be leaving. We made a point of driving back by that intersection when we were done with dinner to honk and wave some more, and there...

Bakersfield is more intricate and interesting a place than many might assume. It shares many similarities with other California towns of the same size, and yet is vastly different from most of them. Our town is friendly, conservative, tightly knit and somehow conversely hostile, aggressive, and sectarian. It is one of the few places I can think of that holds clothing drives every year for students where donors bring new clothes and fan drives in the summer for poorer families, yet can still...

Corvids are marvelous birds. Cunning, they take advantage of what they can. They like shiny things, and social get togethers. They are known thieves, and full of bravado. They can mimic, too.   I’ve always liked that Family. Crows and ravens, especially. Their inky depths, their enveloping shadows. Their bone clacking clicks And ear shattering caws.   The way they perch and look into you To decide if they want To steal your soul Or tell you a secret Or crap on...

I was reading the paper today and discovered that the death toll of American military in Iraq was at over 3,900. That is just US military, and doesn’t include non-military US citizens like contractors or private security, nor does it include fallen military members of allied forces, nor the military or civilian Iraqi dead. I am guessing that at this rate we will hit the 4,000 mark by the end of winter, or very close to it.   To help put that number of 4,000 into perspective,...
