Charity Work

The past few years I've begun actively recycling cans, glass, and bottles ... figured I could do something Green and make a little cash, right?  This and other apparent behaviors I display has earned me the code name "The Bohemian" by my father.

That's not what this blog is about though ... it's about my several years of charity work.  You know, collecting cans, stashing them in a trashcan until it's full, then letting some stranger into my yard in the middle of the night while I'm sleeping to take them away and make themselves a little bit of money.

I feel so violated.

The first time it was like, okay whatever - guess someone needs the money more than I do, and besides - my father had dumped the bags of cans I'd saved into the alley because he said they made my backyard look like a dump, yeah, he's a bit anal and doesn't come over anymore due to the fact I have 3 cans for recycling on top of a green waste and regular trash can.

Last night I felt a little angry, I'd been robbed!  Robbed of my aluminum cans!  What has the world come to?!  Are can collectors so lazy now they just scope out backyards for people who recycle and then wait to collect when they see the can is nearly full?  I wanted that can money!  That was my can money!  They also made off with my trashcan lid!

Then again, I guess someone needed it more than I did.

That's awful! but you know it's better to let it go if it's already happened. I love that neighborhood,.but there are a large amounts of transients  going through there all the time.  It seems when I was a kid there wasn't  that kind of thing going on  there (O A) . i guess it's higher population and   more people out of work,.or,..not looking for any.

I would think maybe next time you might get a small  "tough shed" type  place to store the can's i know it's costly but it will keep people out of yo stuff.

Sad thing is, I'm pretty sure it's not the transients ... more likely the drug addicts that splatter more than speckle through the neighborhood.

A few weeks ago a man I recognized as the father of a kid my daughter goes to school knocked on my door, his wife standing at my gate.  He said their foodstamps had not come in, it was a holiday weekend, department of human resources was not open monday, blah blah blah, he had a bag of movies he wanted to sell for $10.  I only had a 20, and I figured I wouldn't see the change, but I handed it to him with a bag of spaghetti, a jar of sauce, and some canned greens.  He promised he'd go buy what they needed then bring the change back, I gave him the "Uh huh" look, and he said he promised he wouldn't do that to someone helping him and his family out.  Of course he didn't come back, but hey I have a bag of pretty good VHS tapes that my kid can watch in her room on her combo tv.

I have a garage, it looks like an old shack, but I put a security door on it a month or so ago to keep people out.  I think that pissed someone off ... the wood siding is cracked and broken a little more than it was before.  Cest la Vie!  I make sure to keep my important tools locked in the house, and my roommate said he'd put up my security lights soon, but we'll see if he actually does it.  I might have to learn how to run power lines.  Joy!

It's sad, I do really love the area, the homes, the charm, etc.  But the atmosphere is beginning to fail and as much as Oleander calls my name Jack might be right, I might be ready for an upgrade, but we'll see :)

That sucks girl.

I collect cans/recycleables too but I take them to work and give them to one of my coworker who collects them out of necessity. I used to collect them myself, but Mr. Twinkie would get pissed at all the clutter and THROW THEM AWAY. I'd say, "Don't you care about our environment?" and he'd say, "I care about MY environment and these cans are making it look like shit."

ugh. LOL

Kindra, white is ground and black is hot,..make sure all juice is turned off at the breaker box:) heheh i think I'd even put one of those bogus alarms  where if you pull the Lil pin the alarm goes off ,..they'd never know    they would think it's for real, and you are right that area is mixed,..a lot of good people but then again there are a lot of people on drugs in that area too sadly.

I'm sooo glad  ina about week i'm  going to mocing all my stuff to the new house off Issler,..man what a nice area,   dispite a school being there the  people are pretty cool.

I collect my cans and bottles and leave them in the alley, already bagged. I wont go recycle them so I let the starving homeless guy take them, he's a usual around here.

People who steal them rather than do the work and find them, deserve the rep, but it makes it look like all homeless people are bad. Stealing is lame.

Hey but how about that whole new homeless project:D  won't that be something! whoo hoo. You know a lot of people CHOOSE to be homeless., Some are pretty messed up (from the war or whatever)  The government  used them and threw them away.  But I can say we should be doing something about homeless on a one on one basasis. I really hope this doesn't mean more tax dollars?

thins was just a side bar to the blog,..just needed to get that out there.
