Today I came home to find the light post in my yard knocked over. The cement block it's set in marks my property line, the only way you can tell which side of the grass between my house and the cottages is mine.
Anyway, the light post is beyond repair. The lantern part snapped off and the glass was gone, except for a few large shards and a bunch of little shards - so much for walking through the grass without shoes on now.
We figure it was hit by the vehicle that was on the grass today which is being used to move one of the cottage dwellers in. My roommate came home and saw it down, she came inside to make a sandwich, the kitchen window overlooks the grass. She saw a white SUV drive up onto the grass - probably the same one to have knocked my light over. Then my daughter came home and said to my roommate "Someone drove into my mom's light post and now they are driving off fast" she said they had nearly hit one of the trees on their way out. So my roommate went onto the front porch and looked across the way to the people standing on the cottages front porch. They looked over at her with guilty looks. My roommate doesn't like to get into confrontations because she'll blow up if people are being dumb asses, so she just went inside and figured she'd tell me when I got home.
So I took photos of the post down and the remaining glass shards. Then I called the BPD so they could come out and file a report or something.
Officer Whaley was very nice, but he said there was nothing he could do because there is no way of telling if someone hit it, or if maybe some kids were horsing around and knocked it over. I pointed out that I found the glass in a different spot than where the light ended up resting on the ground ... so it was knocked over toward the street, then moved so it was pointing toward my house.
Then we asked if we could radar some people coming down the street. He said "Well, we could ... if I had my radar equipment with me" Poo. That would have made it all worthwhile. He did see several vehicles speed past ... quickly slowing at the sight of his patrol car. He remarked "A lot of places need speed bumps"
Whatever. I didn't even get a police report for documentation.
I guess now I'll contact the property manager of the cottages and see if they'll repair or replace it. Just a little irritating.
