Shame on the "Shame on" people
It seems that lately I cant drive a half a block without seeing "Shame on (fill in the blank)". I find this type of protest to be rather annoying. I have my serious doubts that Mercy Hospital, Action Sports, Ashley Furniture, Lawyers Offices, Paragon Salon, etc, are all having a labor dispute (as if they would all be part of the same union).

From what I understand these protests are a last effort from a local carpenter union to "bully" businesses into hiring union labor. How lame is that? That's like a little kid going to your door asking you if he can mow your lawn, and when you say no, he stands outside and throws a fit.

It it pretty obvious that the people holding these signs are not carpenters either. Which means they must be paid protesters. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I am going to assume that they probably don't have much luck forcing their way into jobs.

I am a union employee (International Association of EMT's and Paramedics), and I must say that I would be pretty upset if my elected representatives were using my dues to fund such a worthless project.

In conclusion I must say "Shame on you.....whoever the hell you are"

I have seen a protest that only lasted an hour

they got there an hour before starting time and once it was time to go to work they where all gone I don't know if they settled it in that time or not but it just looked like they only did it until it was starting time. It was funny to me.

But in defense of the protesters they have some good for their motives plus its sometimes amusing to use all at one point and time ... [ie the peta girls with just there underwear and sandwich boards]

I'm a non-union carpenter, myself. Do you know what that means? It means that I never get a paid sick day. I either work when I'm sick, or I can't pay my rent. I never gat a paid holiday-- so I hate holidays. I have never had a paid vacation in my life. If  I want to take a vacation I could lose my job. I get time off when I'm laid off, and can't afford to enjoy it. I have no retirement, except social security, so I will work until I die. I have no health insurance, so if something is wrong with me, I grin and bear it.

That's a choice I made when I was a young carpenter, and non-union jobs paid almost as much as union jobs, without the rules or the dues. That day is past. Now I would make less money than I made twenty years ago, if I worked for a non-union company. I make more than that, because I work on my own, and I do pretty well, but it's not easy, and I feel bad for young people getting into the trade today. Without unions, you're just cannon fodder, and you have no real future.

Unionization created the middle class in this country, and now the middle class is collapsing. When you see people pickeying and protesting, there's a reason for it-- they're trying to bring back a state of social justice that this country is losing. Unions help every one that works for wages, even those of us who don't belong to one.

The next time you see those protesters, consider giving them a thumbs up, or tossing them a joint, or joining them. Thet're trying to help you.....

I agree with you, my dad was a operating engineer, but now  adays it's sad unions are bought out by the companies, i miss the good old days of the union's strength, now they are as weak as circus koolaid.

I myself am a union employee. Being that I work on an ambulance I do not get paid holidays either. I'm not saying that I dislike unions. I am specifically complaining about a particular tactic that a local Carpenter's union is using against local businesses that doesn't use union labor for remodeling, new construction, etc. The problem with this tactic is that the contractors are the ones deciding what labor to use NOT the companies that put the jobs up for bid. So perhaps instead of "shame on Action Sports" maybe they should picket the contractors.

And as far as giving the protesters a "thumbs up", they are not union labor. The carpenters union hires these people off the street and pays them 10 dollars and hour to hold signs. They aren't supporting any cause, they are just making some extra money.
