SamG - > Oh Stewardess, I Speak Jive! -> Really, Dr. Laura? REALLY?!
Really, Dr. Laura? REALLY?!

This was passed along to me by a friend (taken from the Opinion section of The Jerusalem Post):

"Dr. Laura Schlesinger has a penchant for inane and knee-jerk moralizing. But last week even she outdid herself, as she blamed Elliot Spitzer's long-suffering wife, Silda, for her husband's unfaithfulness with a prostitute.

Speaking on the Today show, Dr. Laura opined: 'When the wife does not focus in on the needs and the feelings sexually, personally, to make him feel like a man, to make him feel like a success, to make him feel like our hero, he's very susceptible to the charm of some other woman making him feel what he needs. These days, women don't spend a lot of time thinking about how they can give their men what they need.'"

(She went on to say "...The cheating was his decision to repair what’s damaged and to feed himself where he’s starving. But yes, I hold women accountable for tossing out perfectly good men by not treating them with the love and kindness and respect and attention they need.")

... I mean, have we been transported back to the 1950s?

Lol....Well, does everyone remember the Dr. Laura nude photos that surfaced some years ago? Apparently she knows a lot about the sex thing...

You can Google it, to see them....if you dare!

But I warn you......like comedy, they are not pretty....

:-P

If you want to be emotionally and psychologically abused, call up Dr. Laura.  It doesn't help that she presents herself as an expert on solving personal and interpersonal problems, but has never taken anything more than an introductory course in psychology.  Her doctorate is in biology.  She has done more psychological damage, and more damage for the conservative cause then anybody else I know of.  Like I said, if you want to be abused, call up Dr. Laura.  Her philosophy for helping others can be summed up in one line: "You're sad because you're bad."

The "Doctor" must have learned that in physiology class.

What's the matter, have you got a beef with BLT, or are you just one of Dr. Laura's most devoted fans?

Haha Matt, I remember the photo scandal!

Even funnier than that and the fact that her Ph.D. is in physiology: She also cheated on her first husband, had an affair with a married man (who eventually became her second husband) and had a child with him while still unmarried. All of which she strongly condemns on her show.

And regarding the interview I posted in the blog: I'm an extremely peaceful, non-violent individual... but that seriously makes me want to punch her. Hard.

Perhaps she's learned from her own experinces and she wants to help others, I agree she has a harsh tone, but if you have to call her up and ask her advice , shouldn't you be yelled at? I'm not a big fan of the psychiatry profession myself. I say if you have a dear good friend you can trust to help you then stick with that person, they know you best. seek people out that have experince in what they know, and yes, you learn from mistakes. I have and all of you have too. I agree witn her in some parts of her statement, I also know if your cup of love is full , temptation will pass you by, In the 50's people took commitment serious, they  thought  if i cheat on my spouse i cheat on God, and myself  Most people didn't want to do  that! We now have no conscienous, It's a free for all. I always understood, if you treat your spuse good and  make them feel good in anyway they wouldn't be hitin the streets,,..most often at least. that mean BOTH partners

You make some good point, an1ok1joe.  And, believe it are not, though I am a psychologist, I'm not always a big fan of the psychiatric profession either.  There are many paths to healing, and many "healers" that will take you down the wrong path.  If a person is seriously suffering, to the point in which they are not able to function, then sometimes it requires a professional, and friendship is great for support, but not always enough.

Yes Joe, you're absolutely right, she should encourage others to learn from her mistakes. But the fact remains that the way she lived (and, more importantly, continues to live) her life is not in accordance with what she preaches on her show. Besides, all of those things were only revealed after the nude photos surfaced and it all erupted into a big scandal in the late '90s. It's not like she told her listeners straight up, "Okay, here's the deal: I've had several affairs, I've been divorced, I helped break up another marriage, I'm not actually certified to give psychiatric advice, my mother and I are estranged... etc. Now, do as I say, not as I do!" She kept it all under wraps and presented herself as this beacon of purity to be admired. That's not to say that we should be judging her for her actions, but I think she's got some nerve to turn around and condemn others. She consistently berates callers for moral and religious failures and advocates ultra conservative "traditional" family values... but why is anyone taking her seriously?!

I agree...I am generally a non-agressive, happy person...but OMG seriously, not too worried about the people in my age group(30's), well, the ones I know anyway, but I thought about this from the standpoint of a mother with two daughters...hearing that kinda crap...men cheat because they do...women cheat because they do...I do believe that someone may in fact seek something they are missing in a relationship, but to place the blame on the unknowing victim (Spitzer's wife)...jeez, that is crap!!!

I don't think she considers her "job" as a psycho talk show host and her personal life the same thing. I think she considers them completely different aspects of her life. Her paid profession is to be a controversial, annoying as hell, backwards/dark ages advice giver. Her personal life is as EFFED up as any normal person' should be. Well, ok maybe worse.

I can't listen to her. My own life gets so stressful sometimes that I don't like to "add" to it by watching or listening to shows like hers that are so negative sometimes they annoy the hell out of me.

I've always heard that psychologists and psychiatrists choose the professions mainly to help themselves, as they are screwed up already.  And their rate of suicide is probably comparable to dentists.   And then this sent to me by my son.

Proof that Men Have Better Friends...

Friendship among Women:
A woman didn't come home one night.  The next morning
she told her husband that she had slept over at a
friend's house.  The man called his wife's 10 best
friends.  None of them knew anything about it.

Friendship among Men:
A man didn't come home one night.  The next morning he
told his wife that he had slept over at a friend's
house. The woman called her husband's 10 best friends,
eight of which confirmed that he had slept over, and
two said that he was still there.
