The Turkey Who Could Not Gobble
Sam was a turkey that could not gobble. No matter how hard he tried he just could not get it right.
“Grumble, grumble, grumble,” Sam called out. All of the other turkeys laughed at him. Each day Sam would practice behind the old barn.
“Cock-a-doodle-doo!” Sam had heard the rooster that morning and decided he would try that instead.
“What in the world are you doing?” Jerry one of the other turkeys questioned.
“Well since I can’t sound like a turkey, I decided to sound like the wise rooster,” Sam said.
“That is ridiculous!” Jerry laughed and laughed as he ran off to tell the other turkeys.
Later that day as Sam passed by the group of turkeys they all mocked him.
“Cock-a-doodle-doo, cock-a-doodle-doo!” they all snickered.
This made Sam very sad and alone. He wanted to have friends but all of the turkeys made fun of him. No one wanted to be his friend in fear that they would be made fun of too. That night as Sam laid down to go to sleep he prayed that he could learn to gobble. His mother overheard him and sat down next to him.
“Don’t you worry about what the other turkeys think,” his mother comforted, “you are special in your own way. When the time is right you will learn to gobble too.”
“Thanks Mom,” Sam said still sad, “I love you too”.
“Remember to gobble it must come from deep down inside where you are the happiest,” Sam’s mother assured.
The problem was Sam was not happy. Not happy at all. He decided to get some rest so he could practice some more in the morning. His mom pulled up his blanket and kissed him on the head. Sam dreamed about playing hide the egg with the other turkeys. In his dream, he was the star hider. All of the other turkeys looked up to him.
When Sam woke up something just wasn’t right. It was light out and the rooster had not crowed yet. He decided to go and check on him. Sam hurried over to the chicken coop and popped in.
“Cough, cough!” the rooster had a cold.
“Are you okay?” Sam questioned the rooster.
“I can not crow today. My throat is too sore,” the rooster looked really sick, “I heard you, cough, crow, cough and you are the best, cough, crower, cough, that I have ever heard. Could you please, cough, cough, a-choo, wake up the farmer for me?” the rooster pleaded.
“Yes, yes,” Sam was excited, “I will”.
And with that Sam ran to the old barn and flew up to the top and crowed with all his might.
“Cock-a-doodle-doo! Cock-a-doodle-doo! COCK-A-DOODLE-DOO!!”
All of the farm animals ran out of their homes. That was the loudest crow they had ever heard. When they looked up, they saw Sam perched at the top of the old barn. The other turkeys started laughing at him again. Out popped the rooster.
“Shame on you,” the rooster scolded, “SHAME on ALL of YOU,” he said as he pointed at each one of the turkeys coughing in between.
All of a sudden, there was a loud bang. Everyone turned to see what was going on. Farmer Jared was half dressed and running towards the barn. The door to the farmhouse had slammed shut as he rushed out to feed the animals. When Farmer Jared reached the old barn, he saw Sam at the top and scratched his head.
“What on earth are you doing up there,” Farmer Jared asked in disbelief.
“The rooster is sick sir,” Sam went on, “he asked if I could crow this morning”.
Farmer Jared thought he was dreaming until he heard the rooster coughing and sneezing.
“He saved, a-achoo, the day,” the rooster sneezed. “Without him you would not have woken up to feed all of us animals.” The rooster smiled at Sam.
Sam flew down off of the barn and all of the animals started clapping and cheering. The other turkeys felt very badly about how they had treated him.
“Would you like to play hide the egg?” Jerry asked in hopes of forgiveness.
“Would I,” Sam could hardly wait, “I’ve been dreaming of this day”.
“Good,” Jerry said, “you get to hide it first”.
Off they went playing hide the egg and singing songs. The other turkeys never laughed at Sam’s crowing again. Sam became very good friends with the rooster and took over his duty while he rested from his cold. Sam’s mom was right; he was special in his very own unique way. Sam was happy, so happy that out of nowhere he yelled out.
“Gobble, gobble, gobble,” He had found his happy place and it wasn’t just gobbling, he liked to crow too.
