Only One King: Remembering Elvis 30 years after he left us (includes new Dr BLTribute Tune)
I'll never put a mortal above the king of kings.  John Lennon gave the appearance of putting himself above the King of Kings and paid for it, dearly.  But notwithstanding the King of Kings, there is, was and will always be, only one king---The King of Rock n Roll---Elvis Presley.

No man has ever touched the hearts and souls of people of all ages across the world in the way that Elvis did.

I did have the chance to interview the only man giving him competition in the 50s when he ruled radio, Mr. Pat Boone.  But today is reserved for Elvis, and that's who I want to honor today.

So let's hear some of your memories of Elvis and/or his music.  Let's hear some of your own personal reflections in the comments section below.

Only One King

words and music by Dr BLT copyright 2007

there's only one Blue Suede shoes
only one Graceland too
there's only one king
there's only one king
there's only one Heartbreak Hotel
only one king
if you couldn't tell
there's only one king
only one king

well
singers are a dime a dozen
and the same goes for
guitar pickers too
but there's only one king
only one feelin' he would bring
only one king
only one king

there's only one
swivel of the hip
only one rebel's curled up lip
only one king
there's only one king
there's only one man
who captured souls
only one king of rock n roll
only one king
only one king

well
singers are a dime a dozen
and the same goes for
guitar pickers too
but there's only one king
only one feelin' he would bring
only one king
only one king

at 17 I moved to California
from Canada
mid-August don't you know
I woke up 'neath
in a hammock 'neath
a palm tree
when I heard
the news
on my transistor radio

well
singers are a dime a dozen
and the same goes for
guitar pickers too
but there's only one king
only one feelin' he would bring
only one king
only one king

Still don't like Elvis.  He's not the king of rock n' roll.  He's the "king" of White rock n' roll.  Don't get me wrong,he helped to break ground into white America... but king of rock?  No.

I appreciate you taking the time to respond, Chase, but I must respectfully disagree.  In rock n roll, there are no colors.  There is no black rock and no white rock.  There is only rock.  And there is only one king of rock: His name is Elvis.  Long live the king!

But the music he played was taken from the black community.  Thus, as far as kingship is concerned, it should be named unto those who created the genre.  Elvis was more of the Ambassador of rock.  And at the time there was.  They were called race records.

Chuck Berry maybe?

It was called hillbilly, they were called race records,  and blues,.but  Elvis BRIDGED the  black white culture as far as rock and roll is concerned. Prior to  it was blacks playing really cool music called blues. They didn't call their music  rock and roll it was ,  blues. Add a little cream to the coffee so to speak and poof something now named rock and roll. The term "rock and roll was coined in a  song taking about  having sex, you know,..rocking and rolling? I think it was  even a blues song if not mistaken. To be honest the the fathers of Rock and Roll are Chuck Berry and Little Richard.

Great debate.  You might say the debate is really rocking and rolling now.  an1ok1joe, I think you've quite masterfully bridged the gap between Chase's point of view and that of my own.

Do you fellas mind if I quote each of you in an Only One King (Part II) thread I plan to post over at Bakersfield.com (and possibly here) tomorrow?

Once again, I appreciate each of your perspectives.

I consent.  Hah.

But yeah... that was what I was saying.  Elvis has his significant role in that he brought the style to White America (at the time when there was such a thing as Race Records).  But Little Richard and Chuck Berry definately.

As far as the term being coined, I can't remember who exactly coined it... but it was in relation to the way either (memory is fuzzy on this) the kids were rocking and rolling to the music, or the music itself was rocking and rolling.  At least that was my understanding of it.

And Chuck and Richard may have invented it, Elvis may have bridged it....

but Led Zeppelin perfected it!

Amen to that last part  Chase! Once again they all pretty much followed the old blues guys, mostly Robert Johnson. Led Zeppelin loved Johnson so did the Allman Brothers and Eric Clapton
