Stories and Songs from The Streets of Bakersfield: Merle's Girl: Have you seen this girl around?

Has anybody seen this old girl around?  If you have, give her my regards.

Stories and Songs from The Streets of Bakersfield is a series based on the huge hit Homer wrote for Buck Owens---The Streets of Bakersfield.  The stories, and the songs are born from conversations I have with real people, on my journey through The Streets of Bakersfield as a Bakersfield Sound-rooted Bakersfield Street musician.  These stories and songs are inspired by real residents of Bakersfield, or people passing through the streets on their way to fulfilling their dreams.

If you hit the play bar at the play station above the photo, you're listening to Merle's Girl, the new song set to be added to my forthcoming CD, From Buck Owens Blvd. to Merle Haggard Drive.

In this blog n roll world of mine, I provide the topics and the tunes.  You provide the talk.  Today's topic is this: Who is the biggest Merle Haggard fan that you know?  Tell us what makes that person (whether you or someone else you've come across) such a big Merle Haggard fan in your mind.

Ready?  Set?  Blog n roll!

Merle's Girl

words and music by Dr BLT copyright 2008

she's a Merle's girl

she's got his posters

on her wall

she's even got an autographed guitar

she knows every word in every song he sings

from Branded Man

to Always Wanting You

she's a Merle's girl

when she's sad she sings

Someday When things are Good

when she fails she plays

Lord, Don't Give Up on Me

and I don't Wanna Be Sober Tonight

everytime

her hear is in misery

Chorus:

she sings

Merle songs

she brings

Merle along

when she works

and when she plays

and they say she'll bring

Merle Haggard to her grave

well, he broke her heart

in 1963

but to this day

she hasn't set him free

though the romance

only happened in her mind

she'll never cheat

she's not the cheatin' kind

she's a Merle's girl

'bin to every single show

from the Blackboard Days

to when he sang

Sing Me Back Home

to the days he made his

politics well known

they'll say she had

nowhere else to go

ok, my dad was. He was born in 1950 in oildale saved his money and bought his first guitar an Ovation Acoustic. He loved Merle he went to his concerts and had some autographs. He used to sing Merle's songs to me, there was one off the 1996 ALBUM that was called Beer  Can hill , we sang it together and drove around oildale looking at places he grew up. He died in 1998 and i have that guitar, its the only possession i have that i would run into a burning building for.

thanks for the blog & roll =D

This is how songs are born. Your story is a very touching one.  I think your story about you and your dad may have just inspired a brand new song, Annie.  Although they may not have called your dad "Merle Man," songwriting sometimes involves adding just a touch of fiction to the facts.  Therefore, the working title is...

Merle Man

words and music by Dr BLT copyright 2008

He was born in 1950

in Oildale

he didn't have a penny to his name

as he grew up

well, folks just called him Merle Man

and some say he was Haggard's biggest fan

they called him Merle Man

he was a huge fan

and he saved each penny

for his first guitar

they called him Merle Man

'cause he was his biggest fan

and he followed Haggard

all across this land

well one day he had a daughter and he played her

Beer Can Hill

as they drove 'round Oildale

right down memory lane

well one day her daddy passed away

but he left her his guitar

and the guitar helps to take away

the pain

they called him Merle Man

he was a huge fan

and he saved each penny

for his first guitar

they called him Merle Man

'cause he was his biggest fan

and he followed Haggard

all across this land

Aww you know I drive around town and show Zachary all the places I've lived went to school,..I tell him stories of  when I was his age.  Which reminds me I have rode my bike  all over the south to south west part of town.  Ha ha I think he was amazed by how much of an area I covered. From BHS to Ming , Chester/Union to CSUB. When I was a kid most of the places that I rode past were just fields. And I mean in those boundaries I was everywhere! no stone unturned.
