Music, movies, psychology and more: Blog round-up

Hey folks, for those of you who have become fans of my two blog sites, here's a mid-week round-up for you:

Bakersfield Sound Underground

http://www.bakersfieldsound...

1.  Penny Lane: The first post in a series that will follow Bakersfield sound rising star, Penny Marie's musical adventures, beginning with her recording of an unplugged CD of material written by Big House's Monte Byrom and other locals.

2.  A new What up, Cowboy? post involving the latest "news, rumor and gossip" surrounding Bakersfield's as-yet-non-existent "hick-hop" community.

3.  A new Buck's Favorite Band thread, that introduces a duet I recorded by local female artist, Moriah of Hey Jude by the Beatles,  and presents a challenge revolving around the Beatles lyric, "Take a sad song and make it better."

4.  A review of the first anniversary celebration of Darkstar Records, featuring an el fresco jam session featuring Monte Byrom, Penny Marie and others.

And here's what's happening on a brand new blog that kind of takes a post-beatnik or, rather "bucknik-Haight-Ashbury-meets-Buck-Owens&quo t; approach to blogging.

Psychology Comes Alive

http://www.psychologycomesa...

New "blog-ins" include

1.  Up Hick Creek Without a Paddle: A comparative analysis between the theme of victimization as it is introduced in the classic movie, Deliverance and as it is introduced in two classic Dr BLT songs, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Jones, a song about a victim of domestic violence, and a song called Mrs. Jones, about a male victim of a woman that is basically bad news, all the way around.  Mrs. Pain is also often interpreted as a metaphor for the oppressive force of depression.

2.  Predictability, the examination of the phenomenon of predictability through an original Dr BLT song of the same title.  As you know, Buck Owens was all about throwing a monkey wrench into this phenomenon, and that monkey wrench really resulted in some fine music.

3.  A couple of blogs centering upon a comparison between Alan Berliner, as portrayed in his autobiographical documentary, Wide Awake and other restless spirits like Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash.  These blogs are supplemented with a new Dr BLT song called Boy Behind Bars, which depicts Merle Haggard as a youth, and an older but no less relevant Dr BLT song, a duet between me and Alyssa Kaess called Johnny and June.

Also, watch for new episodes in the short, interactive story series, Oil Dale (served up slick) and the series, Jerry's Trout Pizza (served up nice and hot).

That's what I've been blogging about lately as it relates to the burgeoning Bakersfield sound music scene, and to borrow from my good friends from the radio show, Bakersfield and Beyond, a bit of the "beyond."

See you on the radio!  Don't miss another exciting round of Bakersfield and Beyond on kwmr Thursday from 6:30-8:30 pm.  If you're far from Marin county, stream it at this link:
