How shall the international community respond to the brutal assassination of Benazir Bhutto, a world leader and a champion for democracy?  It starts with the individual.  Each person must first find a way to express his/her emotions and thoughts.  Then, collectively, we can make a statement.  That statement should be that we not live in accordance with the wishes of terrorists, namely, to life a life paralyzed by fear (hardly a life at all).

We must express our deepest sympathy for Ms. Bhutto and the more than 20 others who lost there lives in this devastating blow to decency and to democracy.  Then we must go about the business of protecting ourselves and others by joining with like-minded nations in seeking and going after those that would bring harm, and brutal death to innocent citizens and leaders of democracy.

A Dove has Fallen from the Sky is my way of saying good-bye and thank you to Benazir Bhutto for giving the world a piece of her heart and of her dream of a peaceful world.  The song is from the forthcoming CD: Biggest Blog n Roll Hits: Volume I.

Please share your thoughts and emotions in response to this terrible event in the comments section below.  And remember: DON'T FEAR THE NEW YEAR!

Maybe I put too much stock in music, but, idealistic as it may seem, I believe that music has the power to be an ally in the war on terror---a weapon of mass construction if you will.  In the psychological operations of the military (psyops), the threat is real, and it is psychological.  The threat is fear.  If terrorists can use the assassination of pro-democratic world leaders and the mass murder of scores of civilians via homicide bombings to raise fear levels around the world, then they are winning.

But boldness, courage and resolute determination are greater than fear, and to these characteristics, we must firmly and resolutely affirm and uphold.  Face the New Year.  Face the Music.  Face the fear head on.

I hope you enjoy my adaptation of Blue Oyster Cult's classic, Don't Fear the Reaper.  Don't Fear the New Year is free if you promise to use it as a weapon of mass construction against the forces of fear and darkness.  You can find it on my free mp3 album at:

That's right.  Ring out the old, bring on the new.  If you're scheduled for a New Years Eve gig, and you'd like to compliment the old songs with something brand new for the New Year, try playing this brand new Dr BLTune called Spread Some New Year Cheer.

Or if you're hooking up with friends and/or family for a New Year's bash and want to sing something before Same Old Lang Syne, try this one.

The music is quite simple.  If you'd like to spread the song around a club or two, shoot me an email and I'll shoot you the chords and the full song arrangement.  BTW, I want thank Mr. Patrick Jarret for backing me up with the harmony on this new recording.  Walter Stormont's handling rhythm and it's Jerry Rothberg on the drums and sax.

Thanks, all of you, for sharing your talents on this song.

Here are the lyrics, cats!:

Spread some New Year Cheer

words and music by Dr BLT copyright 2007

C'mon everybody
spread some New Year noise
play your drums and guitars
all your New Year toys

C'mon
spread some New Year Cheer
Spread some New Year Cheer

Christmas was so special
what a Christmas Day
Now it's time for New Year
Time for New Year Cheer

spread some New Year Cheer
Spread some New Year Cheer

I don't care how rough it was
it all was so last year
cowboy up and celebrate with me
I don't care how rough it was
it all was, oh, last year
spread some Christmas cheer

make some resolutions
make them meant to last
let's not fear the New Year
let's all have a blast

spread some New Year cheer
spread some New Year cheer
spread some yeah
spread some New Year cheer

Yes, it's come and gone again, but let's take this opportunity to share our Christmas memories and to present our hopes for the coming New Year.  The game of blog n roll is easy.  I provide mostly original tunes from my blog n roll jukebox and introduce the corresponding topic, and you supply the comments.

I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas Day and I wish you all a Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas is a greeting that can be uttered in many ways, some verbally, and some non-verbally.  Acts can be more powerful than verbal greetings, and nothing says MERRY CHRISTMAS more than doing just the right thing at the right time for that special person(s).

Has somebody done or said something for you that made such a positive impact that all other ways of saying MERRY CHRISTMAS pale in comparison?  If so, share it in the comments section below.

The song you're hearing is from one of two Christmas CDs I plan to release next year to follow up Certified Gold, Incense and Myrrh.

Merry Christmas to all my fans---------all six of you!

If my most requested song of the day is any indication, people, on this Christmas Day, are already looking towards New Year and are counting on it being a bright 2008.  Future 2 Behold seems to have been adopted by internet "downloaders" as a New Year's theme song.  Today it climbs even higher on the Dr BLT charts than You're Not the Kind of Ho (that Santa Had in Mind), the song that drops to number two even as it gains momentum on its quest to become an underground Christmas classic.

Another song poised to become an underground Christmas classic is Black Santa, a song from the CD pictured here (Dr BLT's Greatest Prospective Christmas Hits: Volume I) at the song appears at number 3 this week.  It's no stranger to the chart, and once climbed to at least #21 (that's when I caught it) on an mp3000.net chart of the top 30 most frequently downloaded mp3s.

It looks like Playin' Politics (with the Dixie Chicks), my song about the Dixie Chicks and their dubious recipient status at the 2007 Grammy Awards, will become my biggest hit of the year.  It is presently ensconced at #4.  Without further ado, allow me to introduce the most heavily downloaded Dr BLTunes of Christmas Eve.

Today's Top Ten Dr BLTunes: Christmas Eve Edition

1.  Future 2 Behold
2.  You're Not the Kinda Ho (That Santa had in Mind)
3.  Black Santa
4.  Playin' Politics (with the Dixie Chicks)
5.  Merle Hasn't Lost His Fightin' Side
6.  Christmas 4 Two
7.  Not Ready to Make RIce
8.  Virginia's Tears
9.  One September Mournin'
10.  When the Bee Gees Were Three

For the few of you that are actually following my musical journey, and want to see me succeed at this craft of songwriting, here's a bit of news for you:

On this Christmas Eve, as candidates take a break from seeking out key endorsements to spend time with the family, it appears that this song of mine, from the newly released CD, Certified Gold, Incense and Myrrh, has picked up an endorsement of sorts, making  the top of this "playlist" over at berkelyplace:

http://berkeleyplace.wordpr...

I'm unworthy, but exceedingly grateful for the endorsement.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!
Happiness is contagious, as is holiday cheer.  But nothing reinforces another's Blue Christmas more than somebody is overjoyed while he/she is suffering from some type of profound loss or deep seasonal sorrow.

There are plenty of songs for those who are in a state of seasonal suffering.  Hard Candy Christmas, Blue Christmas, What Kinda Christmas has This Become, and many more.
As I mentioned, I can't stop crying now when I hear Dan Fogelberg's Same Old Lang Syne.
That's my favorite sad seasonal song right now, but hearing it, and knowing that Dan is gone provides a bittersweet listening experience.

How about you, what's your favorite sad seasonal song?  How about your least favorite? My least favorite is, without a doubt, Christmas Shoes by new song.  It's the mother of mawkish, maudlin not-so-Merry tunes.  Actually I've heard it so many times now that I've decided I might adopt it as a guilty pleasure.  It hurts sooooooo good!

Oh, by the way, today, right here on my blog n roll jukebox, I'm featuring my cover of Blue Christmas, from next year's as-yet-untitled Dr BLT Christmas CD:

That's not us in the photo.  Periodically, during this CDiary series, I will feature photos of genre's that will have their influence on the music that is being produced.

It's after midnight, and I'm still running on the energy that was produced by what is now last night's recording session at Bakersfield School of Music and recorded.  When you're surrounded with talent such as the type and abundance of talent produced by local artists such as Patrick Jarret (vocalist); Walter Stormont (percussion), Jerry Rothberg (drums, saxophone) and Reggie Langendorfer (lead guitar/drums), a very interesting and exciting chemistry ensues.

One day I picked up a hymn book, began to play It is Well (with my Soul), and another melody, other than the one that originally corresponded to the piece, came out of me.  On this arrangement, Patrick Jarret begins with a soulful and captivating verse/chorus prelude to the hymn with the new, original melody by yours  truly.  It is a modern folk/gospel/soul fusion and I think you will agree that it works.  The new CD, featuring old hymns done a new way (including some songs not generally put into the category of "hymns", and new hymns.  The CD will be called Altar'd Hymns.  It will be a fusion of modern and alternative folk/rock post-punk style with gospel, soul and New Nashville West.

As always, Johnny Cash will be with me in spirit, as will the other JC.

It is Well (with my Soul)

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blessed assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

It's been kind of a whirlwind romance with brand new, original Christmas songs.  This year, I woke up with a new one bouncing around in my head almost every morning.  The end result was my most successful CD release parties to date, the first, on December 1st at Russo's Books, and the second, at Starbucks on Rosedale and Calloway on Thursday, December 20.

I want to thank Tommy Isbell, Walter Stormont, Jerry Rothberg, and Pat Frase who added their talents to the project.  Tommy, Walter, and Jerry were all at the gig on Thursday at Starbucks.  Another special guest, the opening act, was singer Patrick Jarret, who opened the show with his soulful rendition of Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.  He will also be joining me in the studio today and will appear on one of next year's Christmas CDs.

I want to thank all who have made supportive comments here as I was working on the CD and conveying my experience in blog posts.  I want to thank all from this blog community who attended the show.

If you'd like to read the "thumbs up" review of the CD, you can find it here:

Without further ado, I give you

That's the direct link, but here's where you can also find it, and here's where you can STAY TUNED on everything Dr BLT:

His songs were deeply personal.  He wrote and recorded some of the most touching ballads of the 70s and 80s.  Now he's gone, but we'll remember Dan, and his songs.

Feel free to use the comments section to post your thoughts, poems, songs and links.  I'll start it off with my new tribute song.  It's at my website among the free mp3 downloads today:

http://www.drblt.net

Dan, this one's for you!

It'll Never be the same Auld Lang Syne

words and music by Dr BLT copyright 2007
Frosty Rock Records

the paper said that you were dead
that you had slipped away
and the snow that fell upon the pages
soon "turned into rain"

chorus:
and I realized
it would never be the Same Auld Lang Syne
and I realized
that every year
you'll be missed
and Christmastime

December 19th
just a day
before my Starbucks show
I heard the news
and wrote this song
about the songs you sewed
your tender songs
were sewn into our hearts
and in our souls
and Auld Lang Syne
won't be the same
without your rock n roll

and I realized
it would never be the Same Auld Lang Syne
and I realized
that every year
you'll be missed
and Christmastime

time slips away
and so did you
you slipped away too soon
and every year at Christmastime
we'll sing your Christmas tune

and I realized
it would never be the Same Auld Lang Syne
and I realized
that every year
you'll be missed
and Christmastime

Though things seem to have stabilized, to some extent, of late, the loss of soldiers over the past year has been overwhelming and sad.  We can all unite in grief, whether you support Bush's international policy, and this war, or not.

Silent Knight is one of three Dr BLTunes that will be distributed among the troops this year, with lots of help from HEARTS OF OUR SOLDIERS.  It is dedicated to those members of our military who have lost their lives over the past year, and their family/loved ones.

Honorable deceased men and women of our military, this one's for you:

Johnny Cash was a big influence on my latest Christmas CD, Certified Gold, Incense and Myrrh.  But he has always been a big influence, and he continues to be.  Sometimes at Christmas, I get sick of all the syrupy, sticky sweet Christmas songs, enjoyable as they may be on most days and nights as we approach that glorious Christmas Day.   That's when the Christmas songs of Johnny Cash appeal to me most.

On the heels of the CD release party (part II) for Certified Gold, Incense and Myrrh, the CD picked up the BIG 2 THUMBS up by this critic:

I'm just conducting a little test that requires a little feedback from you, the blog visitor.  I'm talking about the image that come up the same on every post.  I switched to a new seasonal image, just me sitting beside a tree with blinking lights.  I noticed that I see it on certain, but not all computers.  I'm just kind of curious if it comes up blank on your screen, or if you can see the image.

If nobody sees it, there's no sense posting it.

Well, the moment has arrived.  I had to bootleg it myself before anybody else did.  It's my new Rudolf parody, entitled: Rudy, the Redneck, With Beer, from next year's Christmas CD, Big Bulbs from Dr BLT's Novelty Tree

STAY TUNED (literally) to Big Bulbs and to my latest CD, Certified Gold, Incense and Myrrh, right here:

http://www.drblt.net

Merry Redneck Christmas!

From me, Dr BLT!

Rudy, the Redneck, with Beer

parody lyrics by Dr BLT copyright 2007 Frosty Rock Records

Rudy, the redneck, with beer

had a very shiny nose

and if you ever saw it

you would even say it glows

all of the city slickers

used to laugh and call him names

they never let this redneck

play their highfalutin games

then one foggy

Christmas Eve

Santa came to say

"Rudy with your neck so red,

won't you ride my trailer sled?!"

then all the city slickers

hated Rudy even more

they tried to shut his lab down

when the meth heads

came to score

Rudy, the redneck

with beer

married cousins half his age

after enough Blue Ribbon

he'd announce he was engaged

and at the wedding shower

they would give out mixing bowls

they'd forget and leave the labels

Cool Whip was the brand, you know

daycare

at your senior prom

Skynard was the band

your girlfriend's hairdo was destroyed

by a ceiling fan

Where did you get those wind chimes

made from hubcaps that were hot

road kill for Christmas dinner

tallest pickup on your block

I like your sewage system

just a drainpipe down a hill

I like your kid's crib mobile

made of fancy beer can lids

 murdered your first wife, Betty

she burned your Elvis 45s

when you pass gas

in public

you blame it on your own son, Clyde

your truck's astray is so packed

you can't get it out

those tires worth more than your truck

without a little doubt

stay tuned everybody

you know there's gonna be part 2

next year at Christmastime yo

you'll be singin' this song too!

Bakersfield is a small town.  You never know just which big rock star(s) you'll run into.

Just a few months after I stumbled across ex-Korn Nu metal guitar sensation cum New York Times bestselling author, Brian "Head" Welch, and interviewed him, I stumbled across another local "once-lost-now-found" sensation, Lost Ocean, and interviewed them.  Then, just a few days later, on Thanksgiving weekend, I ran into Brian Welch again, and talked about not-so-old times.

These cats are not just local artists who stumbled into this town and, by a stroke of luck, found themselves on major labels.  They are artists with truly inspiring stories to tell.  Brian's story, his book, and my interview with him, inspired such Dr BLtunes as Tradin' in Korn (for a Crown of Thorns), Korn-bred and Korn off da Kobb.

Now, just in time for my Christmas CD release party (Part II), to be held at Starbucks this coming Thursday evening at the very Starbucks where I met and interviewed this band (Rosedale Highway east of Calloway), the interview has inspired a new Christmas song, entitled, That Lost and Found Christmas Song

Here's the link to my Phantom Tollbooth interview with Lost Ocean:

http://www.tollbooth.org/20...

And you can hear what the song sounds like by hitting the virtual buttons above (if you haven't already).  We hope to perform a live, "unplugged" version of ..Lost and Found... this Thursday night.

Lost Ocean, thanks for the interview and the song it inspired.  You guys rock!  You guys, and your music, rocked my Christmas! Merry Christmas to you and yours, and a very Happy New Year!
It's been four years since Saddam was captured, but every Christmas we should thank God (and the good old USA) for the Christmas gift that keeps giving.

Sure, even in the face of positive new developments in Iraq, there are many who wish we hadn't gone into Iraq, but who, among you would actually love to see Saddam back in charge?

Celebrate the anniversary of his capture with me with this song, from next year's Christmas release: Big Bulbs from Dr BLT's Novelty Christmas Tree.  Here's That Saddam is Gone Christmas Song.

Rudolf, the Red-nosed Reindeer isn't just a fun story to tell children at Christmastime.  It teaches them a valuable lesson concerning physical imperfection and self-esteem.  It teaches them that a supposed physical flaw or handicap can actually become a strength that let's them rise to the very top of the heap.

The Bible, more specifically, the Apostle Paul, teaches us a similar lesson as adults.  He teaches us that God's strength is revealed through our weakness, and that God is glorified through our weaknesses, not only through our strengths.  Paul himself complained about a "...thorn in the flesh."  That was Paul's red nose.  And he ended up leading a sleigh filled with spiritual gifts for all to freely receive.

I woke up this morning with a new melody in my head and about the valuable psychological message behind the story.  That yielded this new song, a shrink's adaptation of the story, into a brand new Dr BLTune that, hopefully, both children and adults can draw benefit from.

The song is soooooo new, that you won't even find it on my brand new Christmas album, Certified Gold, Incense and Myrrh.  It's part of a CD I'm working on for next Christmas, entitled Big Bulbs from Dr BLT's Novelty Christmas Tree.

STAY TUNED (literally) hear (pun intended):
http://www.drblt.net

Rudolf, the Red-nosed Reindeer (Wasn't Always such a Sane Deer)

words and music by Dr BLT copyright 2007

Rudolf, the Red-Nosed Reindeer
wasn't always such a sane deer
he had self-esteem-related issues
and his tissues were filled with tears

so if you're little
here's a riddle
how do you deal with
your little flaws
got some big ears?
or one big eyebrow?
don't you cow tow
just stand up tall...

Every Christmas, more lights and more, fancier decorations are added to houses in my neighborhood as things appear to be getting more competitive.  It's not that difficult to keep up with the Joneses when it comes to decorating the house for Christmas.

What is more challenging than decorating the house is decorating the heart.  Christmas is the time to display hope, good will, peace, and love towards our fellow humans (and animals).  It's not hard to appear to possess these characteristics of the heart.  It's much more difficult to cultivate the genuine characteristics themselves.  But that's what is needed to make the world a better place, not just at Christmastime, but throughout the year.

This year, I've decided to decorate my heart for Christmas, not just my house.  And I even wrote and recorded a song about it.

MERRY CHRISTMAS from Dr BLT & Family.

It's been a very successful year for me, with my latest CD, Certified Gold, Incense and Myrrh poised to become my biggest-selling CD ever.  In addition, several songs have had, not millions, but thousands of downloads over the past year.

I've been on MTV, many times, and I've made several top mp3 download internet charts and best records of charts.  But I've yet to appear in Billboard.  SO FAR, NO CATEGORY FOR BLOG N ROLL MUSIC HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED. Not to worry.  I've had some relatively big blog n roll hits (with a small "t") in 2007.

Most of my Christmases have been nearly picture perfect.  But there are at least a couple that I'd rather forget.  One of those was the Christmas of '85 when my then girlfriend and I broke up just a few days before Christmas.  I went through the motions, but clearly lost my Ho-ho Mojo, and just wasn't feeling it, if you know what I mean.

How about you?  If there's a Christmas you'd rather forget, share it in the comments section below.  I don't want to bring anybody down, so I'm really looking for Christmas memories that seemed like nightmares at the time, but memories you can laugh about now.

For those of you that are experiencing this Christmas as that horrible one, make sure to seek out the comfort of loved ones who can offer you emotional support throughout the season.  Make sure you share your sorrow with someone who can lift your spirits, and not be dragged down by your sorrow and suffering.

BTW, the song you're hearing is called Ghost of Christmas Past.  It's from a future Christmas CD of mine.

If you want to hear live, unplugged versions of original songs from my Certified Gold, Incense and Myrrh CD, be sure to show up for my free show at Starbucks at Rosedale, just east of Calloway on Thursday, December 20 at 7 pm.  It's free to the first thousand people who show up.

MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and yours!

Although she's much too young to read, this diary is for my daughter's eyes only, for the sake of posterity.   But one thing she will realize about her daddy as time moves on is that he didn't mind sharing his musical journey with other travelers.

It's Sunday, December 9, 2007.  Today is my anniversary.  Kassidy, your mother and I have been married about 12 years.  Mama's still sleeping.  And yes, you can come along when your mama and I go out to celebrate for dinner later this evening, but, for now, I'm in my home music studio trying to flow with the creative juices while I get into the Christmas spirit.

This is no bull.  I was listening to my recording of my new hick hop Dr BLTune,
Christmas on the Farm, from one of next year's Christmas CDs, Big Bulbs from Dr BLT's Novelty Christmas Tree, and I noticed something was missing.

As I reflected upon my life, much of it, growing up on a farm near Saskatoon, right on the Saskatchewan river bed, I remembered more than a bunch of chickens.  We had all kinds of farm animals.  And that's what was missing on this song, so, for your listening pleasure, and for the sake of filling in the vast interstices in my memory bank, I added a few more animals.

Oh, as for the rest of you if you happened to have stumbled across my CDiary and are reading what are intended to be private comments (yeah, right!?), then be sure to STAY TUNED, literally at my website:
