If you can't decide between Cake, a young Buck, a young Merle Haggard or Bob Dylan, you may want to consider one of the rising stars on the folk side of the nu bako sound. His name is Kenny Reeves. He's from Bakersfield, and he's featured today at: Bakersfield Sound Underground I'm linking the old and new communities today, just like I do at Bakersfield Sound Underground. If you catch this link, and ride this train: http://people.bakersfield.c... ..you can get in on the debate, examine the evidence for yourself, check out my psychoanalysis of Kurt's journal, and even hear a sample of my cover of Come as You Are by Nirvana. There's a debate going on over here that you just don't want to miss: The new radio show, Bakersfield and Beyond, at KWMR in Marin County (see details below) is stirrring up a great deal of excitement over a burgeoning Bakersfield sound revival. The revival and the hunger for a return to country roots, is bringing on board a whole new generation of Bakersfield sound and nu bako kccrock (Kern County country rock) fans that are exceedingly curious about the history associated with the Bakersfield sound. That brings me to the need for this blog. They want to have the benefit of first-hand exposure to memories that were made here in Bakersfield. Today, we're centering on this place, perhaps the hottest spot in the golden era of Bakersfield sound. The deman is great and its growing every day. If you have memories associated with the Blackboard, post them here, and post them now! In the meantime, to help trigger the memories, here's a song from my Confessions of a Buckaholic CD: 4 Quarters Gets Me 2 Buck Songs Dr BLT words and music by Dr BLT copyright 2005, 2009 http://www.drblt.net/music/... Now, for more about Bakersfield and Beyond... Greetings,
Bakersfield and Beyond - music for mavericks, outlaws and romantics! Wanted to drop a note to folks to remind you to tune in via the FM airwaves (90.5, Point Reyes Station or 89.9 in Bolinas) or stream at www.kwmr.org this Thursday, March 19 from 6:30 pm till 8:30 pm. My pal Mike Varley and I are hosting a new show that launches tomorrow. We will be on the air every other Thursday to spin some great tunes influenced by the Bakersfield Sound (great California music - steel guitar, hillbilly, country, folk, Americana) and beyond - rockabilly, punk, blues etc. that were inspired by the not so sleepy town at the end of the dustbowl migration. The body of work and those that created it is fascinating and will keep us busy for some time. Not sure what the Bakersfied Sound is? Tune in. We will be interviewing Bruce Thiessen, PHD (aka Dr. BLT) who is a bakersfield musician and songwriter. He will report out from Bakersfield informing us about what is going on from the hometown. It's KWMR pledge drive! We hope that if you like what we are doing, appreciate and enjoy community radio and are a fan of West Marin you will consider supporting the station that is allowing us our endeavors. At any time during the show you should feel compelled to call 415-663- 8273 and talk with Tylan Billings (working the phones). Ty inspired us by encouraging this effort so you can thank him for helping the concept move forward. If you are a regular listener to KWMR you may know that Will Minor had a show in this time slot for many years. He is taking a breather from having a regular show. We have BIG shoes to fill. Future shows will include live music in the studio, more interviews with Dr. BLT and lots of great tunes. We have some really great pledge premiums including some awesome CD's and even concert tickets to local live music. Put it on your calendar and let us know what you think! KWMR.ORG studio number is 415-663-8492 (best to call this number when the music is playing and only during our show, unless you want to talk to other programmers) Amanda and Mike Amanda Eichstaedt Bear Valley Inn, LLC PO Box 58 Olema, CA 94950 415-663-1777 www.bearvinn.com There will be an actual pilgrimage and a virtual one. Follow the details and submit songs, memories, stories at: Bakersfield Sound Underground http://www.bakersfieldunder...
The show is called Bakersfield and Beyond. Amanda and Mike over there have been fanning the flames of a Bakersfield sound revival on the West Coast. Where else can you hear the old classics from the likes of Buck and Merle next to next generation artists like Big House, the Derailers, and me, Dr. BLT altogether on one big grand radio show? If you're on the West coast, you can catch the show every other Thursday at 90.5 FM at Pt. Reyes, and 89.3 FM in Bolinas. Best of all for locals, you can catch the show live streamed via: http://kwmr.org/listen_kwmr... They're also doing a pledge drive and giving away lots of Buck Owens and Derailers CDs. Some folks go postal. I prefer to go coastal. There's a brand new Marin county show about the music of Bakersfield where they've graciously invited me and my nu Bako sound Kccrock tunes to be a regular guest. Find out where the nu bako sound waves are travelling to next as you follow my radio interviews on the West coast. You'll need to go underground for that: Bakersfield Sound Underground http://www.bakersfieldsound... *Kccrock: My nu bako brand of Kern County country rock, grounded in the Bakersfield sound. Welcome to Nu Bako SoundOFF. I'm Dr. BLT, and I'll be your blog n roll host. As your host, I will supply the topic, and the tunes. All you need to give me in return is the talk. Personally, I don't think there's any stopping Lost Ocean. When the Sex Pistols lost EMI, they wrote and recorded a song about it, that basically said, "Ef U." Lost Ocean is not an "Ef U" type of band. They are more like the Beatles, Buck Owens' favorite band, but with a modern twist. I'm sure that by now, most of you have heard that Bakersfield's own Lost Ocean lost their contract with EMI. I don't like to either beat around the bush, or pry, so, in a recent interview that has not yet been released, I mentioned it briefly. You will soon get the results of that exchange, when the interview is published, with links to my musical response to the interview, in the form of new songs, like this one:
They Said Good-bye to EMI
Words and music by Dr BLT copyright 2009
They said good-bye to EMI
And hello to independence
In this here life
Sometimes we lose, but then we grow
Some times you win the most
When you just let it go
They said good-bye to EMI
And hello to one more show
And one more set upon CD
This may be the best year
That they’ve ever seen
The Pistols didn’t care at all
When EMI tried to make them fall
They just went down in history
Did not turn back to EMI
To plead
They said good-bye to EMI
The Beatles said I say hello
You say good-bye
And what is lost
Is somehow gained
If we believe in things
that rise above the flash and fame
The Bakersfield Californian feels lighter and costs more these days, but Shellie Branco's front-page article about Korn-founding-member, Reggie "Fieldy" Aruizu's conversion to Christ was both priceless and heavy. In my blog n roll world, I supply the topic and the tunes. The topic is posted in the subject line. So here are the tunes:
Korn Off Da Kob Dr BLT words and music by Dr BLT (c) 2007 Shrink Rapped Records http://www.drblt.net/music/...
Tradin' in Korn (For a Krown of Thorns) Dr BLT words and music by Dr BLT (c) 2007 http://www.drblt.net/music/... (including the lyrics to one) Korn Off da Kob ...along with my Interview with Brian "Head" Welch in Phantom Tollbooth http://www.tollbooth.org/20... Now for your part, the talk. Ready? Set? Blog und rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrolll! Isn't it time academia began to embrace modern music? Isn't it time academia began to embrace the arts? Isn't it time academia moved from obsessive compartmentalization to multi-disciplinary integration? Do you need a "map" connecting you from Bakersfield to LA via the Grapevine? Are you a student who feels just like a number or a statistic? On Tuesday night, March 10. 2009, students in my Behavior Methods of Psychology at Chapman University (the College of the Canyons site in Santa Clarita, California) will participate in The M.A.P.P. (MUSIC- ARTS-PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM)--- a program, designed by yours truly, to seemlessly integrate music, drama, the auditory arts, and principles of psychology into study aids on CD, made available to other students as entertaining study guides for the course. Me, and my group of graduate psychology students will be recording a brand new skit, and a mini soundtrack to that skit at Command Studios, a studio run by members of Odaal, an LA-base alt band. It's the second of a series of M.A.P. projects, the first having been done right here in Bakersfield via National University, involving a group of students in my Assessment Techniques course. It's all just one big experiment. We're having fun. We're learning. If you think fun and learning represent an oxymoron, you've never attended one of my classes. In short, class can be a gas! Will this project meet or surpass all expectations, or will it be a partial or utter disappointment? We'll all have to wait and see. We'll be sure to keep you posted.
Bring Me to Life (Another Statistic)
(from the soundtrack to the skit)
Words an music by Dr BLT copyright 2009
Don’t wanna be
Another statistic
Sitting in a table
In the back
Of some university textbook
Don’t wanna be
Another statistic
Lost in a big ANOVA
Multiplied by a heartache
And a tear
Chorus:
Bring me to life
Bring me to life
Don’t roll the dice
Bring me to life
I’ve been put through
So many procedures
Found to be reliable
Verifiable, valid and
Marked by precision
On a scattergram
For all the world to see
The degree of correlation
The amount of variance
Transformed into
z and t scores
(chorus)
I feel like a number
Numb and cold
Hit by calculating fools
Crunch the numbers
But don’t crush my soul
Crunch the numbers
But don’t take my rock ‘n’ roll
(chorus X3)
Welcome to Dr BLT's Random Jukebox. I'm Dr. BLT and I'll be your host. Welcome to another episode of the blog n roll series Dr. BLT Replies: Dr. BLT answers fan questions and addresses fan rumors. I'm Dr. BLT, and I'll be your humble host. *In certain cases, details surrounding question submissions are slightly altered to protect the identities of fans, and to make the series more entertaining. Here's today's fan question, coming from Jane via email. Apparently, Jane is a die-hard fan from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. You might call her fixation with my music Jane's Addiction. Dr. BLT, I'm a singer songwriter and I've been hearing about the nu bako movement that's going on. I heard that you are at the helm of this Bakersfield sound retro movement and that you are considered the King of Kccrock. I have three questions: 1. What does the term "Kccrock" actually stand for? 2. How did a Kccrocker like you end up on an MTV-award-nominated top hit music video by Cake, and how did Capitol Records get you to also appear on the radio commercial for the CD, Comfort Eagle? 3. Can somebody outside of Kern County become a Kccrocker? Dear Jane: Thanks for your questions. I'll do my best to answer them. I'm no king, I can assure you that. In fact, I have many flaws as an artist. King's rule, but I could never become a king of anything. For one thing, I'm not organized enough to be such a king. Second, I put my family above all else, so I don't tour. I only perform about once every few months after I release a new CD. To answer your first question, the term Kccrock stands for K.ern C.ounty C.ountry Rock. To answer your second question, I'm assuming you're referring to this music video, that lost out to the White Stripes at the 2002 MTV Video-Music Awards for Groundbreaking Music Video of the Year: http://www.youtube.com/watc... There are two theories about that. One is my own. I just happened to be at the right place at the right time, that place being the place I used to hang out and play as a street musician: At the corner of J and 19th streets in Sacramento, California, between Starbucks and Noah's Bagels. My wife offers a second explanation. She said that Cake is drawn towards unusual personalities or persons, and that they may have been aware of my whereabouts, and tracked me down. My wife is rarely wrong, yet I've had a little trouble swallowing her explanation as a feasible one. As for the commercial, I basically signed my life away when they made the video, so I wasn't approached by Capitol. Like you, I just found myself on the commercial. To answer your last question, since being a Kccrocker, or a nu bako sound artist, only means that you allow yourself to be completely immersed under the influence of the Bakersfield sound, and then that you take it, and put your own sound and style into it through the creation of your own songs, or covers of Bakersfield sound classics, I believe you can become a Kccrocker. It's not about where you live, it's about what you're under the influence of, and where you take it. I hope I've answered your question. Please email me for a free Dr. BLTrading Card. Fans, to get your questions answered, please write Dr. BLT at: I'll leave you with this self-mocking song I wrote and recorded with Brian Benson about my experience on that video: Short Part/Long Cake Music Video
Welcome to Dr. BLT's Random Jukebox. I'm Dr. BLT, and I'll be your host. Today's random jukebox is Neil Young (Have You Forgotten?), a song named by this blog critic as the # 8 best record of 2006. http://www.morethings.com/m... The song can be heard by hitting the play button on the attached play station. Ready? Set? Blog und rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrroll! When I was working as a practicum doctoral student trainee at California Institute for Men, the state prison in San Luis Obispo, my then supervisor told me that I was the first supervisee he had worked with that wasn't narcissistic. Well, I'm not saying I agree with him 100%. I knew of at least one other supervisee of his that I wouldn't consider narcissistic in the least bit. But I can assure you that my goal of becoming Kern County's first Nu Bako Kccrock star is not a goal of the narcissistic variety. No, narcissistic gratification is not my goal. My goal is to be the presumed leader of a new Bakersfield sound revival, leg by what I'm hoping will become a steadily growing number of solo artists, duos and bands known as Kccrocker (Kern County country rockers) whoes members wholeheartedly embrace the Bakesfield sound, and open themselves up to its influence, even as they boldly experiment their way to carving out their own unique styles. What is Kccrock, you may ask? Well, it's simply the old meeting the new. If you want to be a Kccrocker, all you have to do is open your mind, your heart, and your ears to the Bakersfield sound from days of yore, and allow it to envolope your being and influence your own unique style. So, to summarize, Kccrock Music, aka Nu Bako sound, or, simply, Nu Bako, is simply Bakersfield sound + you, and whatever you bring to the table as a creative artist of a new generation. To find out more about what I'm doing to fan the flames and lay the groundwork for a Bakersfield sound revival through a nu bako sound I call Kccrock music, visit: Bakersfield Sound Underground http://www.bakersfieldsound... or my own artist website at: And, to summarize in terms of my own personal musical goal, it goes something like this: I Wanna be a Kccrock Star words and music by Dr BLT copyright 2009
I wanna be a Kccrock Star I wanna be a Kern county rock star of a roots-based kick-ass country variety I wanna be a Kccrock star I wanna play in honky-tonk bars like Trout's and all the others that you see
chorus: I wanna be the one to rule the stage I wanna be the one to shake the cage like Buck did, way back in those grand days I wanna be the one you can depend on to take it in a whole new direction I'm not just beggin' for attention I wanna be a kccrock star
I wanna be a Kccrock star don't care about a fancy limonsine car like the one parked out in Oildale we all know I wanna be a Kccrock star I wanna be a Kern County rock star with a country twang and twist all of my own (chorus) I ask you to support me I beg you don't deport me I only want to see this town on fire with a passion for the music like it happened in the old days I wanna be a Kccrock star So let me take the stage (instrumental bridge; chorus)
Welcome to Dr. BLT Replies, a brand new blog in which Dr. BLT answers fan questions and addresses fan rumors. I'm Dr. BLT, and I'll be your host. Here's today's question, from a fan who also wishes to remain anonymous: Dr. BLT: When did your band, Practically Poetz break up? Dear Fan: Practically Poetz (pictured here and featured in song here) has never officially broken up, we've only taken a break since the release of our freshman CD, Everywhere. That leaves the door wide open, but with me now living in Bakersfield, and the other two band members living in Sacramento, it's much more difficult to get together to rehearse, record (except via internet) and to perform. Thanks for your question. Dr. BLT Welcome to Dr. BLT Replies, a brand new blog in which Dr. BLT answers fan questions and addresses fan rumors. I'm Dr. BLT, and I'll be your host. Here's today's question, from a fan who wishes to remain anonymous: Yo, Dr. BLT, people tell me you used to wear a red suit. Then I heard you had a hit song called Black Santa. That brings you to my two questions: 1. Were you Santa Claus in a past life? 2. Are you black? Big Anonymous Fan Dear Big Anonymous Fan: The answer to both questions is a big, fat, unequivocal and emphatic "NO!"---not that there's anything wrong with either being Santa Claus or being black. I did have an internet hit with a song about Black Santa. Though I am mostly known for rock, country, and Kccrocker (Kern County country rock), I also did a little rap back in the day, and it reached # 21, just a few spots below what was a Korn song at the time, at a site that tracks the most popular internet downloads. The red suit rumor may have come from the fact that, as a member of the frontman of the blues-punk band, Uncle Bruce and the Nephews (pictured here), I used to wear a red suit. I hope I have answered your questions and have cleared up any linging Dr. BLT rumors. Yours Truly, Dr BLT PS: If you're a fan with a question, or want to have a BLT rumor cleared up, it's not hard to find my email address. Find it, and write me. I can't possibly address all the questions and rumors raised by my fans, but with this new series, I should be able hit a small percentage. Go underground at: http://www.bakersfieldunder... Stay Dr. BLTuned at: http://www.drblt.net
Welcome to Dr. BLT's Random Jukebox. I'm Dr. BLT and I'll be your host. Today's random song is from my CD of mostly original songs about the music and life of the Rolling Stones. It's called: Dr. BLT and the Rolling Scones http://www.drblt.net/music/...
Rolling Scones are: Dr. BLT: vocals, rhythm guitar, bass, guitar solo Drums: Pat Frase (formerly of the Dusk Devils) second guitar: Jerry Rothberg percussion: Walter Stormont
All who have recorded at what started out as a theatre, evolved into Buck Owen's recording studios, and then Fat Tracks, and then Pigs, whether solo artist, band, duo, here's your chance to make a final statement about a place indelibly etched into the history of the Bakersfield sound, the history of Kccrock (Kern County Country Rock) and the history of all of the nu Bako sounds that have made this community so vibrant and promising. If you want to be part of a new compilation CD entitled Last but Not Least (well...maybe), email your mp3s to me, Dr. BLT at: drblt@drblt.net Let's bury the hachet, replace them with axes (the guitar kind) and create an historic recording that includes all of those who have recorded at this legacy of a studio. If Buck were here, I'm sure he'd bless such a project. To prevent any profit-related legal issues from spoiling the pudding, let's donate the money to the Buck Owens wellness center or to the Buck Owens historic society. It could be low budget, and/or we could find sponsors to provide the revenue for production. |
