Dolores Huerta Speaks Truth in the Temple of Conservatism
Legendary labor leader, Dolores Huerta, gave the commencement address at CSUB this week, and was treated rudely by some of the parents. Her words were a breath of fresh air in this backward airhead city, and it's too bad that these people couldn't listen. Dolores has spent her whole life working for social justice in our state. She is a co-founder, with Cesar Chavez, of the United Farmworkers Organization, and organized the first big grape boycot. She has worked tirelessly for farmworkers rights, minimum wage and gender equality. She has been arrested 22 times for protesting and had her spleen removed after being severely beaten by police in San Francisco. She's a recipient of an honorary degree from Princeton University, the Community of Christ International Peace Award, and the 2009 UCLA Medal. She is the president of the Dolores Huerta Foundation, which works for equality in health care, housing, education and jobs. Bakersfield should have been proud to listen to her. The people who booed her disgraced themselves and their city. I'm putting up a video of her CSUB speech, and one from her address at UCLA. Compare and contrast The people at UCLA treated her with love and respect. The Bakersfield video is marred by smarmy comments added by the ignorant conservative who posted it. The comments are educational in that they illustrate the airhead viewpoint of the knee-jerk conservatism that continues to hold this community back. Thank you, Dolores, your words needed to be heard here, and were very much appreciated by many of us. peace..... 5 comments from 4 users

I remember the huelgas way back in da day. I am a farmworkers kid . we were in the fields working just trying to make a living . we didnt know anything about Cesar or his so called huelga. to alot of field workers he was a hero to alot of other field workers he was a guy who just brought in his people and made alot of problems for us. He would come and the bosses would get mad at us. he would leave and we would get stuck dealing with an angry gringo boss. I dont want to say that he didnt do anything for La Raza cus he did. we got clean cold water to drink and clean toilets and a break and lunch if you are working by the hour in the firlds today. But in my ignorant uneducated opnion , thats all we got . and I do thank Cesar for that . Today Cesar is gone and in the fields of Bakersfield there is still alot of wrongfull abuse going on today . Just get of your car go in to the vinards or orchards and you will see it. poor mexican field workers are still sometimes living in the orchards , sleeping on the floor, with no water to drink , no toilets to use. soooo... did Cesar do enough ? does the leadership (dolores )even care anymore? I cant answer that I am only giving you a former field workeers opnion. So if the conservitives treat dolores with disrespect its cus they are acting just like they have been bred to act. this is not " The City ", this is Bako. still very much a hick town , no matter how we paint it ha ha ha . so dont hate me I am just the messenger , speaking from a former field workers point of view ese posted by

Had to change the title of my blog as there's a sad little person on this site who can't write his own blogs and has to add "part two" onto other people's work. I could throw down terms like "pathetic" and "loser" here but that would show a lack of compassion and, you know, we do need to feel compassion for our brothers and sisters who don't know how to act. A person like that wrote another long winded attack on Dolores Huerta in the Californian yesterday. Of course that desultory rag chose to trumpet it on the front page-- "Dolores Huerta Controversy Part Two!" Part two? Hey, I guess there's a lot of sad people looking for attention these days.... Too bad the Californian can't just put out a good paper to make their money. There's plenty of good writers in this town, and they ought to consider hiring a few of them so we could have the kind of newspaper we deserve. The author of the article, a wet behind the ears conservative geek, called Dolores both "arogant" and "ignorant." Well, Dolores has had eleven children and still has done more for the common people in this community than anyone else you can think of. She has sacrificed her spleen to the struggle for equality and still has not been silenced. I don't think our little CSUB graduate letter writer is going to silence her. I went to CSUB myself, and Bakersfield College, too. A personal confession-- I was kicked out of the CSUB Dormitory for smoking marijuana the first year it opened, and I never looked back. I've lived and worked in Bakersfield off and on for many years, worked alongside so-called "illegals," rednecks and okies. Played music with cats that played with Buck and Merle. Bakersfield is a diverse city with some of the coolest most enlightened people you'll ever encounter on the planet. But there's a vanguard of right wing conservatives that claim to speak for all. They're full of shit and they give this place a bad name and continually embarass the rest of us. Screw them. Don't listen to them and don't be silenced. Their day (if they ever had one) is over. Conservatism is deader than the cttage cheese in the back of my refrigerator. You gotta have compassion for these people. The world is changing around them and they don't know what to do. The other big piece in the editorial section of the Californian was about what Sarah Palin has to do to become president in 2012. Well, it's uncharitable to call people pathetic, but that's how out of touch these people are. Sarah is not going to be president. Dolores is not going to be silenced. The boos came from the parents-- not from the students. Your son's and your daughters are beyond your comand, your old role is rapidly fadin' and the times they are a changin'. Right on, Dolores and thank you. posted by
