matt - > Yeti Go Ska -> Your opinion on non-profit organizations?
Your opinion on non-profit organizations?

"If you were a non-profit organization, would you accept cash donations or requests for sponsorships indiscriminately - as long as it benefitted your cause?"

FICTIONAL EX: An "adult entertainment" business puts in a request to co-sponsor a "Hurricane Katrina Relief" fundraiser event organized by a non-profit organization, OR wants to throw a "Bikini Car Wash" to benefit the same cause - Should the non-profit be allowed to turndown the adult business request to sponsor or donate funds?

As long as everything is within the law - would you embrace the business, or kick it to the curb - even though it meant thousands of dollars in contributions?

**Non-profit and private organizations are not always subject to anti-discrimination laws.

But what are your thoughts?

Thanks for you input!

I'd accept it ... but that's me.  See, what if some of their big contributors threaten to pull out with their yearly HUNDREDS of thousands contributions ... what do you do?  Well, duh, keep the big contributors happy because they are regular and yearly.  Hopefully though people wouldn't be so petty and just be happy that everyone is helping one way or another.  Why can't we all just get along?  :)

I just finished a screenplay and novel that has a bit of the issue of questionable funding. In my story the main character says:

‘Why shouldn’t I take money from the porn industry? As long as porn is sold in every 7-11 in America, invading our convenience stores and providing easy access for everyone, we might as well take a little back.’

And why not? If porn is found everywhere doesn't that mean people everywhere are buying it? Why not take a little bit back?

Certainly it should depend on the non-profit and how conservative their mentality is. But I say, if the porn industry is a multi-billion-dollar behemoth, make them build some of America's parks and by golly, have them help lower the cost of gas and Disneyland tickets!

If you're non profit, more than likely you stand for a specific cause, right? So would it make sense for PETA to accept donations from a slaughter company? Probably not.

If you're a Christian non profit, would it make sense to accept donations from the KKK? Probably not. Well, of course that depends on what Christian group. hahah. But seriously.

If the donation isn't a conflict of interest there's no reason why you shouldn't accept it.

This actually happened in Bakersfield...a certain group of women that I know turned down a sponsorship deal with an adult entertainment establishment. The group isn't neccessarily non-profit, but is in need of sponsorships. Sometimes you need to think of reputations and what sort of image your organization wants to project. By accepting money you are basically aligning yourself with these people. Not so good if you are a family-friendly sort of group. It hurt to turn down money, but I believe it was the best thing to do.

Oh and I think 7 Elevens stopped selling adult magazines in the late 80's.

I doubt a Katrina victim would care who the donations were from.

Being part of a non-profit, Rock Out To Knock Out RSD, Inc. I so agree that it would depend on what the organization stood for and who it targeted. Ashley is careful who she hits up for donations and help, not because she does not need the donations she can always use those. It’s due to the reputation of her organization and who they target.  We hold all age shows and to put  that it was sponsored by the porn industries it might not go over so well.
Peace,
Lorie
