Promoter & friend - Kurtis Willingham, RIP

Kurtis Willingham was a Bakersfield concert promoter, and a good friend to so many, as well as a proud father, son, and brother - he passed away on Saturday August 24th, at the age of 35.

According to official reports, he passed on his way to the hospital after going into cardiac arrest during a visit at his dentist.

I've known Kurtis for years as an acquaintance in the local music scene, and as mutual fans of Oingo Boingo (Kurtis has a Boingo skull on his leg,) which he loved to talk about, but it wasn't until I was preparing to move back to Bakersfield from LA that we worked together on a Hurricane Katrina benefit at The Dome in '05.

Kurtis was my connection to all the local headbanger bands and knew everybody to call for help.

Once I visited his home to drop off some fliers for the show, and he began to tell me about his epilepsy and that he wanted to throw some more benefit shows to support the Epilepsy Foundation.

Lifting up his shirt he once showed me the scars from past seizures that had sent his body into such a spin, he literally had to be put back into place.

Despite his pain, he never sat still.

Kurtis was always involved in an event of some sort, and seemed to have a guardian angel over his shoulder at all times. He actually did some pretty ambitious productions - the Freak Fest shows for one. I made him tell me the whole story about those events. Afterwards, my only response was, "Man, you're crazy dude." He would just laugh, as if to say, "Yeah, I am, but somebody has to make the fun happen around here!"

Some events were better than others, but if you ran into him - he always gave you the, "What's uuuup?" greeting. He was a gentle soul, and enjoyed being in the middle of the action - especially where the pretty girls were. He also loved music and local bands and would drop ideas to see what people thought of them before he moved forward. If you needed help, you could usually call and ask Kurtis - whether you be a musician or a stand-up comedian like his brother. Remember the Syndicate Lounge Comedy Nights?

I can't exactly remember the last time I spoke with Kurtis, but you were always bound to run into him downtown or with his buddies congregating at the bar.

When the word spread of his death, you could sense the shock of losing such a young, talented life.

The guy had a big heart, and a lot of enthusiasm for the projects he involved himself with, and there are still no words to express what his loss is to the Bakersfield music community. Our hearts go out to his family.

We’ll miss you Kurtis.

This message was posted on his Facebook.com profile, by his aunt Lynn Bly the day after Kurtis passed:

Hello to all the friends of Kurtis Willingham.

I am his aunt, Lynn Bly.

It is with great sadness that I report that Kurt passed away yesterday, Aug. 24th, 2008. He was having dental work done, had a seizure and went into cardiac arrest.

Kurt leaves many friends that will miss him dearly as well as his daughter Nicole, brothers Garrett, Neal and Drew, sister Leah and mother Connie Willingham, as well as extended family.

PLEASE LEAVE YOUR MEMORIES AND DEDICATIONS TO KURTIS BELOW...

I saw Kurt at Starbucks a few weeks ago. He was busy having a pow wow with some guys from the scene.

He was always so polite. I tended to ruffle feathers here and there in the music scene, and if I ruffled Kurt's, he never said anything and was always very easy going.

He was one of the biggest supporters of local Bakersfield rock. I am saddened for his family and the city's loss.

RIP!

I think it should be  mandated that dentists performing surgeries  should  have someone on hand for emergencies id they don't already.  I didn't know Kurtis, but I'm sure he's in a  better place.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Kurtis's family and friends. It is hard to hear when someone passes so young but It is especially hard to hear when a fella musician or music supporter has past.  Bakersfield is a smaller place then what we know. And all of our lives touch in so many ways here. He will be truly missed.

Everyone knew Kurtis.  If you didn't know him, you got to know him.  I don't think he had one enemy.  He was a good guy and a good friend to any of his friends.   I couldn't and still cant believe this is true.  Thinks like this should not happen to such good people.  He sent me an email last week but I was to busy to reply.  I feel bad for not making time.  You just think people will always be there, ya know?  Especially when they are your own age.   Remembering back when I heard the sad news, I thought about years ago how he had a seizure and my boyfriend at the time, helped him out.  He just laughed it off.  I remembered when I used to make him give me massages when he went to message school.  I remember always comparing tattoos with each other to see who had more or who had better ones.   I remember he saved my life, by telling me, in the most gentle way he could, that my boyfriend had cheated on me.  He was very loyal friend.  He was a good listener even when I was a rambling idiot.   I remember laughing, drinking, and rocking out to bands with him.   I can not relate any bad memories to that man.  He was just always pleasant.  He is in a better place for sure but I was blessed to get to know him while he was here.  Im sure everyone elase that knew him feels the same way.

My sympathy to his family and especially his child. :(

Love you Kurtis- <3 Sandy

Kurt, I'll never forget our summer together with Andy, Kassie & Ricky in Idaho.  Fishing, hiking, listening to that ONE rap song you had on your walkman, almost getting arrested for climbing that mountain...good times man.  I wish I had known you more as an adult.  I'll definitely miss you.  :(

If you met him, you knew him. That was it. He had no uptight pretension in a business defined and measured by such douchebagness. I met him in the mid nineties when he was living with a very good  friend/ bandmate of mine. He turned me on to the Toy Dolls and we both devoured all things Boingo. Damn, If there was ever a reason for all the good bands I used to be in to reunite (and include all the good bands I'm in now) it would be in his honor because he was always there with a gig for them. He was a fan, a friend and a completely selfless person,

My deepest condolences to his family especially his daughter whom he loved with everything in his core. You, young lady will have the respect from so many people through the memory of your father. Myself included. Knowing Kurtis, as soon as he passed on he immediately started scouting locations for the next show. With the talent pool up there, it would be heaven to him.

I miss you my dear friend. Tears do well up, you know.

It warms my heart to know that so many people saw you for what you were. A fantasitc human being with more love for life, family, and friends than most of us dream of. I wish I had kept in touch with you more as adults. I never missed a chance to find out how and what you were doing from you mom. I never had you pegged for such a wild child in adulthood. I just remember you telling on us all the time. I miss you, and am sure you have a special place set aside for you.

I love you and will always miss you.

Georgie
