Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead
Written by Tom Stoppard
Directed by Ron Warren

Auditions for this show are being held at The Empty Space: 706 Oak St.
Saturday, February 20th: 2-5pm
Sunday, February 21st: 2-4pm

This absurdist, existential comedy explores the themes of fate and free will within the context of the lives of two minor characters from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Rosencrantz & Guildenstern stumble their way through the plot of Hamlet while seeking blindly for answers.

All roles are available. Come prepared to perform cold readings from the script (both modern and Shakespearean). I will also ask you to perform your best theatrical death, so come prepared for movement!

Principle Roles: These roles are open to actors of any gender, ages 20 and up.
· Rosencrantz- Generally oblivious and easy going, but sometimes prone to melancholy.
· Guildenstern- Analytical and neurotic, but searching for moments of illumination.
· The Player- Leader of the tragedians, larger-than-life, an artist. Mentor and nemesis of R&G
Roles from Hamlet: These characters are the characters from Shakespeare, and speak only their lines from that play. The ages and genders given are those of the character in question, but some liberties may be taken in casting these roles.
· Hamlet- Melancholy. Mad? Prince of Denmark. Male, 30
· Claudius- Usurper, murderer. King of Denmark. Male, 40+
· Gertrude- Widow and bride, in that order. Mother of Hamlet. Female, 50+
· Ophelia- Hamlet’s love. Vulnerable, confused. Female, 20+
· Polonius- Platitudinous courtier. Father of Ophelia. Male, 50+
The Tragedians: 3-5 actors of any age or gender.
· The acting troupe accompanying the Player through the play. Experience with the recorder is a plus. Their specialty is dramatic death scenes.
· Alfred- A young transvestite. A member of the Player’s troupe of tragedians.

The show runs April 23rd-May 8th. Rehearsals will begin in March. For more information, contact The Empty Space at 661-327-PLAY.

As of this writing, we have raised 547 books for CASA kids during our Christmas Book Drive.  We were hoping to raise 1,000 by Christmas Eve.  We still have today, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to pull it off and we're counting on caring, giving people like you to help us realize this goal!

CASA kids are going through a rough time, and the holidays seem to make it harder.  It is our hope that we can ease their hardship by getting brand-new age appropriate books to the children so they can enjoy the gift of literacy through the ever-so giving people of Bakersfield.

We've already had a tremendous turnout from our community.  Our own booksellers have dug into their pockets to provide some books to these kids.  Won't you help us?

Please come to Russo's Books in The Marketplace (9000 Ming Ave) and grab a book on the table dedicated to CASA and hand it to a cashier.  Your purchase counts towards your book club membership!  Call us at 665.4686 for any questions, we'd love to hear from you!

Thanks to those who've already donated!  Happy Holidays to all!

Christmas Book Drive for CASA

Russo’s Books is proud to host the 1st Annual Christmas Book Drive benefiting C.A.S.A. (Court Appointed Special Advocates).

CASA of Kern County began operation in the summer of 1994 to serve as an independent voice for the best interests of dependent children -- abused, neglected, and abandoned children living in protective care -- in Kern County, California. Our mission is to recruit, screen and train volunteers from communities throughout Kern County to serve as advocates in child protection proceedings. We also support and closely supervise the advocacy work of our volunteers throughout the duration of their court assignments. Over the past 15 years, CASA of Kern County has recruited and trained 679 Advocates and has served 1,767 of Kern County's most vulnerable children.

The holidays are especially tough for these kids.  Some of them think that they’ve been forgotten; lost in the system.  We want to make sure that every child receives a gift.  We urge you to participate in our Christmas Book Drive for CASA.

Here’s how it works:  Casa has sent us a list of how many kids are in their program.  No names, because their privacy is of the utmost concern for CASA! (We do know how many kids are involved, their gender and their ages.)  We have set up a table with suggested titles that are appropriate for minors.  You can grab a book that was suggested by our booksellers, or grab a bookmark and pick out a book yourself.  Purchase the book and we’ll place it in the “book box” for CASA.  From now until December 25th, we will collect the books and take them over to CASA to give to the children.

While the book drive is in full force now, the official kick-off is slated for December 5th at 11:00 AM at Russo’s Books in The Marketplace.  We are pleased to have The Honorable Mayor Harvey Hall and authors Nick Belardes and Dana Martin join us to help start things off by reading a story to the kids.  Other community leaders and local celebrities will join us as well.

Our goal is to raise at least 1,000 books!  We certainly won’t mind if we break that goal early… we’ll just up it to more!  We want to let them know that Bakersfield cares.  Won’t you help us give the gift of literacy?

I wrote an article about my big move from B&N to Russo's, and it caught the attention of a big-wig writer from FOXBusiness News out of New York.  She wrote an article about my experience on "both sides of the spectrum"... it went live today!  Check it out!
