Today!
Today I woke up feeling like shit. My back hurt, my left shoulder, my hands. I can barely make a fist in the morning. Just your usual "getting old so deal with it" pain. The only problem is, it's pain I've been feeling since I was a teenager. I finally went to the doctor about seven years ago and was diagnosed with fibromayalgia. Like most skeptics I thought, "That's just a title somebody made up for people like me who really have nothing they can diagnose and they are tired of trying to figure it out!" The treatment for Fibromyalgia is simple. Anti-depression medication that is supposed to "alleviate pain" as well as .. and of course...treat depression. The only thing is, I'm not depressed. Well, at least not mostly. And when I am it's only on the first of the month when my hubby gets paid and I figure out that we don't have enough for the bills. But even then.. it's only a temporary depression. Just long enough for me to figure out what we can pay, what we can hold out on a little bit longer, etc. Anyways, recently we switched insurances. Not because we wanted to but because nobody in town was taking the service provider our previous insurance was using because they weren't paying the bills. We went from Health Net to Blue Shield. My previous doctor didn't take Blue Shield. Anyways, I ended up with a different doctor, in a different town and I decided.. you know what? I am gonna try something. I'm gonna tell my new doctor all my symptoms and see where that gets me. Sorta like a "second opinion" but with a Twinkie twist. So he sends me to do a series of tests based on where I told him my pain is and based on my other symptoms. He ruled pretty much everything out. No fatty liver. (pain in my lower back) No gull-stones, no kidney stones, no .... oh well.... too many things to rule out. But I have none of it. Including arthritis. Or cancer. Last call? A neurologist. The neurologist says he thinks one of the things wrong with me is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome because my arms fall asleep ALL THE TIME for no apparent reason. He does the test...
NOPE. Well, he sees that my right arm falls under the category based on the test. BUT that doesn't explain why my pain is primarily on my LEFT side. So he decides it's something else.. I can't think of the "name" for it right now but whatever it is he decides it's something that physical therapy can take care of. Nobody has mentioned fybromayalgia yet. Hmmm. Anyways.. I just finished a month of physical therapy and my pain symptoms are still there. BUT my arms aren't falling asleep anymore. Of course my NEW symptom is that my right pinkie is going numb for a bit in the morning at first wake up. Anyways... I'll keep you posted! For now.. today.. TODAY I woke up feeling like shit. But tomorrow is another day, right? 8 comments from 5 users

welcome to carpal tunnel stretching exercises are good for it ,..we like to type too much Twink. I have bursitis i think you spell it that way. On my elbow on my left arm my arms too would fall asleep but now that I'm working all that time that doesn't happen. I had my foot crushed a few years back (just soft tissue damage) and I was fine , but a bone was sightly chipped. i sometimes get a pain from hell out of no where from that foot,. yep getting old or battle scars,

Oh no, sorry Twinkie! Isn't it so frustrating when every "expert" comes up with a different diagnosis? I did about a year of physical therapy for my knee, and it did absolutely nothing for me in the long run (though I did enjoy the ultrasound gel messages!) I hope you're able to find something that works for you soon. I'm a baby when it comes to dealing with pain, but I love your little bit of positivity at the end of your blog :) posted by

Has anyone checked your spine? I was wondering if you might have a pinched nerve somewhere further up than your arm? Just curious. posted by

yes they did some nerve tests and ruled that out. Joe, I DON'T have carpal tunnel. He thought I did because of the restriction of blood flow, but then he decided it has to do with that name I can' t remember right now. Anyways... today was also a shitty day (ha) but hopefully tomorrow will be better. I'm just glad this doctor was proactive and didn't just decide to lump me into the fibromayalgia category without at least doing more testing than the arthritis one, which is what my first doctor did. posted by

ha. yeah.. it does. The good thing about physical therapy is that my arms aren't falling asleep anymore. I told my p.t that I can deal with the pain.. I mean.. HELL.. I've been "dealing" most of my life. But the feeling of not being able to sleep because my damned arms were causing me so much grief was depressing. posted by

I am very not into Dr's I actually don't like them much, i don't think they care, only about money but that's fine, i dont care, whatever. I have a plate missing in my Back which causes a lot pf pain at times and it makes it hard to walk on my right leg . I have had every kind of pain medication thrown at me + physical therapy (which is bullshit) and nothing has really helped and honestly you cant make it a lifestyle. Pain Medication doesn't help the problem and only band aids it. The best advice i can give you is, work out, at first it will suck but once you get into the habit you will feel 99% better, i still have some days where my back hurts really bad, but i just work thought it as best as i can. I work out an hour everyday except on Sunday, it was hard at first but it has helped a great deal, its not easy at all, but everything is life that's worth it, it Hard. and changing a lifestyle is hard. very hard.
good luck, i feel your pain :) posted by

Hmmm arthritis , could be, and the more you exercise it tends to help , but it could be that my hands are weak in the mornings , my mom had RA and her hands were someone twisted, not bad but it hit her about age 50. I'm like and old work horse. I get up with aches and keep moving. I hope they find it's something easy to treat!
