My American Idol Adventure
We started off in downtown Bakersfield. We had to meet up with local novelist, N.L. Belardes, who was nice enough to get me two tickets from Dirty Spanglish for the RSD Benefit concert this Saturday. I should have taken a picture, I don’t know why I didn’t. He looked funny with his glasses all fogged up from the weather.
Since I don’t know my way around I just parked and waited. He walked in the rain to meet me and do the exchange. I felt like I was in a movie and I had just pulled over for a drug exchange or something. When he walked up to the window I said in a street rough voice, “Hey dude, you got the stuff.” And he played along and said, “Yeah, I got the stuff.” My daughter looked at us like we were weird. I explained to her we doing a very dangerous, very illegal drug exchange. Everybody knows when you do such exchanges, you MUST change your voice to sound rough and street thug-ish! She immediately understood!

Then he joked that he couldn’t see through his rained on glasses. I suggested he invest in a pair of Windshield Wiper Glasses, like you see in cartoons.

Then we were off. We went directly to Hollywood Blvd. As soon as we got there we noticed a group of people with signs. They were from the Carpenter's Union and they were protesting.

I didn't stop to ask what they were protesting. We were on a mission. .. to do some SHOPPING!
Hey look! It's Johnny Depp's hand and feet imprints! Man, he's got small hands. But look at the size of those feet!
MY DAUGHTER: "you know what they say about men with big feet! Tee hee"
ME: "yeah, that they've got BIG........ SHOES!"
Then it was time to eat. HEY STAR SIGHTING… is that Michael Jackson across the street, wearing a red jacket?

They don’t allow cameras at the taping so I don’t have any pictures of that. But I’ll give you all a quick recap of what happened. As we were waiting outside the studio for them to let us in we saw many of the Idols friends and family. Phil’s wife was sitting right next to me while we were waiting outside to get in and she had a bunch of other signs made up and she asked people around her if they wanted a sign. Isn't that sweet? She's soooooo nice. She was talking to everybody and all the ex-Idols were excited to see her and genuinely hugged her tight. And the staff did too.
Sanjaya’s twin sister was sitting one bench over. It was neat to watch her interact with other people that were there who were very obviously family members of the other Idols. This lady asked her for her autograph. She seemed happy that somebody would want it! Then the lady said, " My daughter is such a huge fan........ "

Oh thank you!

"..... of Sanjaya.... but I guess you're about as close to him as we're gonna get, hu?"

takes a breath... then says, oh yes, Sanjaya, thank you. He's so sweet. And people are so mean to him. Thank you for being a fan!

I know that the lady didn't think she was mean, but.... well, what do you think? I felt so bad for that girl. anyways.... let me know if I am reading too much into it.

Ok.. we were allowed in the studio one hour before taping. So we had one hour to "socialize?" with each other and the ex-Idols that were there for the show as audience members.
CELEBRITIES THERE:
The Commodores minus Lionel Ritchie, who I'm sure was too busy holding Nichole Ritchie's hair back as she puked her lunch out.
TeriHatcher ... she's very NICE and very beautiful in person!
The cast of Til Death

During "commercial breaks" basically the celebrities that were there were like little kids at the candy store. They would come up to each other and take pictures with one another and act sooo excited.. you know? Like THEY were star struck. Paula was kind of to herself. Randy interacted with the audience a few times. Simon responded to the MANY "I love you Simon's" that were shouted out. But he seemed embarrassed by it. ha. So cute!

Sanjaya's family during commercial would yell out and whoooooo at him and he's soooo adorable, he would wave back and make funny faces at them... sorta like I do with my kids. It was sweet!

This lady that sat next to me was soooo obviously related to Lulu. and was there ONLY to see Lulu. So when we were all clapping, she wasn't clapping. When we were all dancing.. SHE wasn't dancing. When we were told to stand up. .. she didn't stand up. And once Lulu got done performing... she LEFT... she left a SEAT EMPTY!!! Such a big no no when it comes to live tapings like that. RUDE!

We almost got Brad Garrets autograph (the show Everybody Loves Raymond... he's the brother... he's in the new show Til Death now) during a commercial but then we had to sit back down. We were able to get JustinGuarinin's autograph, though. He's a cutie!

Can I just say.... that Simon Cowell is HOT in person. I mean HOT. His smile is genuine and cute and sexy and when he looks at you... OMG! The audience LOVES him. when he came out he got the loudest, longest cheers EVER! I think the moans and groans he gets from the audience are strictly for t.v.

Paula was nice but fake-ish "I'm a rock star" nice. Like the little wave she gave us was the "wave, you're the queen on a float in a parade" wave. And somebody yelled out from the BACK ROW "I love you Paula" and she looked directly behind her to the FIRST ROW (towards us) and told US "I love you too" Her body is wow! She's skinny.... nice body. she seems heavier on t.v. Not in a bad way... just heavier. She couldn't have been more than a size 1.

PeterNoone(celebrity guest) was adorable. so cheery and sweet! And sooooooo excited to be there, and be performing. It was cute!!! I enjoyed watching him perform and even knew some of the words to his song. Lulu’s(other celebrity guest) performance was ok. I didn’t recognize the song. But she’s a great singer. And if her relatives hadn’t pissed me off I might have cheered for her.

RyanSeacrest.... hottttttiiiiieeee! This girl in front of me yelled something out to him. And he took the time to have a quick exchange of words with her. She was so cute! She was so excited/starstruck that she got to "talk" to him. It was an AWESOME experience... and I am soooo glad I went!

Stephanie cried and cried.. then she toughened up and sang her song. At the end of the song she choked, forgot her lines and didn't recover. So the girl with the black hair with pink highlights? She came up behind her and hugged her from the waist and swayed to the music with her and let her know it was ok that she forgot the words. Other than that she sang beautifully and it was sad to see her go. And awkward.. since her family was pretty much right next to us. I felt bad for them.

My evening ended in a very interesting note. I stopped by Kindra’s house to pick up some Girl Scout Cookies. I pulled up to her house, she opened the door and this monster ran out of the house and was about to eat me alive. She ran out and very heroically tackled the monster down , subdued it, and put the shackles back on it. I was safe. Wheew! That was a close one. Then a ghost escaped from her attic, but it was a friendly ghost. I think his name was Harry. Harry The Ghost sat there all alone while we talked for a few minutes. Heaven save his soul!
Ok actually, I'm not sure who I met. I was too embarrassed to ask. But he was VERY NICE and very cute!
***I don't know why some of this is in small letters, and some isn't? but whatever.... LOL

Was it too long? I tried not to leave out details for my friends that are actually American Idol fans. I haven't really watched this season so I don't know everybody's names, etc.....

How fun!! :) I listened for you, even taped it (don't have tivo) just in case I missed you. I really wanted to hear you scream out for Simon. hehe...

I was bummed to see Stephanie go. I really think Sanjaya should go home. He seems like a genuinely sweet guy, but I don't like his singing. The bottom two just really surprised me. :( What's up with these votes?? Have you been to votefortheworst.com. That's just not fair. They're cancelling out my votes! Oh wait, did I just admit I vote on AI? Oops. hehe... In my defense though, all I do is text message. It's not that bad, right? hehe...

How exciting! I'm sure it was really fun. And yeah, I think the lady's comment was a bit rude. It just wasn't necessary.

You're daughter's so cute!

posted by twinkie on Mar 22, 2007 at 12:24 PM

yeah.... I don't think she MEANT it to be rude... it's just one of those things that don't come out quite right..... I guess??

I didn't yell out like I said I was going to. What happened was I was waiting for just the right moment... you know? Then it went to commercial... and this lady right behind me screamed it out first. SHE BEAT ME TO IT DAMMIT! And then it just started from there... EVERYBODY was yelling out how much they loved Simon and whatnot. I didn't want to seem like a copycat so I didn't do it. Oh well!

I can't remember if I stated this or not on my article.. but I was wearing a hot pink short sleeved polo shirt and was sitting three rows back from where the judges were sitting. Almost right behind Simon. And a lady next to my daughter was holding a white posterboard sign with Lakisha's name on it. The lady next to her was wearing a lighter pink jacket, and her daughter was wearing a pink spaghetti strapped top.

I couldn't be any more jealous!!!!!!!  I totally just lived vicariously through your "Idol" story.  I am on the waiting list as well and I imagine that it won't be until next season that I will get to go to a taping...bitter.  Okay, the Michael Jackson comment was HILARIOUS, it really looked like him in his red blazer.  I Tivoed the show for you so come on by and watch it this weekend and tell me ALL about your experience.

I agree with you that Simon Cowell is VERY hot. I appreciate his candor and honesty, I don't think he is ever rude... but I also wouldn't necessarily want his critique on one of my performances, I would be too afraid of what he would say.... which makes it a good thing that American Idol has that darn age restriction, eh?!  I thought he was going to fall all over himself over Haley's performance the other night, but I even found his reaction hot. LOL. Hopeless!

So glad you went and enjoyed yourself. I used to live a block north of Hollywood Boulevard, across the street from Capital Records. I still like going down there.

Hey, did the Commodores have those massive 'fros??  Because that would have made me mad to sit behind someone with a big ol' 'fro! ;) I loved hearing about your evening.

haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. No they didn't still sport those 70's 'fros. That would have been funny though. Although... come to think of it, Justin Guarini's fro is WAY taller than the Commodores ever were!

You know what pisses ME off? TALL People. Damn them tall people sitting in front of me. Everytime they stood up I was screwed. I couldn't see anything.

Ah Norma! What a fun experience. I have never watched American Idol but I seem to know a lot about it for someone who has never watched one episode. (shhh! Don't tell but I am addicted to celebrity gossip blogs, which may account for my knowledge. It's a sad, sad thing.)

I have to say, you and your daughter are way cuter than any of those American Idols.

So then you already heard about the crying girl from the night before being planted by American Idol? I don't know why they are saying she was "planted" I mean, it wasn't like she was ACTING. They were real tears. You can watch the video here! just cut and paste the link to your browser.

Wow! That sounds like so much fun to be a part of that! I bet that SImon Cowell is a hottie. He just has those "puppy dog" eyes that are just irresistible! I thought the show that you went to was the first show this season that everyone's performance was MUCH improved! Oh, it's Gina with the black hair with pink highlights. She's the rocker of this show I think. Kind of a Joan Jett or sumthing like that.

Hey Norma!!

Love all the details you put on here:)  It's great that you got to see so many celebrities!

You and your daughter are such cuties!  What fun!  He HE!  I thought Michael was hanging out in India, haha!

I'm glad the local Forrest St. crackhead didn't find you on the street looking for my house - she nailed Mark earlier that evening (okay, that came out wrong).  Noticed he was looking and asked for what, he told her, she pointed, then asked for a dollar.  Mark is the lovely English/Canadian man that was visiting (met him through Couchsurfing.com).  Pumpkin was the jackass with the dark hair (funny if you mean him, hahah!  Oh I'm being too hard on him again, lol!)

Sorry about the monster, I keep him around to protect me from all the heebie jeebies in the Oleander Area ;)

A friend of mind does set work for reality shows, I keep not taking her up on her offers to get me in to see live tapings.  The last one was Rockstar or whatever.  I'll have to take her up, sounds like lots of fun, and I bet I can get extra spots for you and your girl.

I DID NOT mean your Canadian friend... yes YES yes... I thought he might have been Punkin but he was so damn adorable I figured maybe it was a roommate or something. He's so cute! I always pictured Punkin with a huge ol Punkin head and huge jack-o-lantern teeth. hahaha

Your monster scared the hell out of me. I seriously felt chunks of my legs bitten off and my life flashing before my very eyes as he was running towards me! hahah. Yeah, I know.. I'm chicken. But you knew that already!

Oh... and hey.... the next show I want to see is Are You Smarter than Fifth Grader. Are you game to go? It will have be in a couple of weeks, though. I'm broke right now.
