Baby Twinkie brought home an easter bunny chocolate for me yesterday. So trying to be the silly mom that I am, I re-enact this picture: So I take a bite off the butt part.... and well you get the idea! Of course he thinks it's the funniest freaken thing in the world and he cracks up! So after he finishes laughing he says, "do it again, DO IT AGAIN!" So I do it again, he busts up laughing again like it's the first time he's ever hear the joke, then he says, "do it again, DO IT AGAIN"
I had the most interesting and surprisingly delicious lunch today. You see, usually, I go home and have leftovers from whatever I made for dinner the night before. But the night before, I didn’t make dinner. Instead, my friend “SMc” and I, along with my daughter and my Nana, went to College of the Sequoias to a Tim Z. Hernandez spoken word performance.
I first heard about Tim Z. Hernandez through Bakersfield's Literature, Music, and News Blog Paperback Writer. I went to an event hosted by Noveltown’s N.L. Belardes at Russo’s Bookstore. If you feel like playing "Where's Waldo" go to the Noveltown link I provided and look through his pictures. I'm in two of them, I think?
The service was great that day. Then again, the second lady wasn’t there from the last time I was at Russo's so that might have had something to do with it.
But back to my lunch. I went home, and there was nothing to eat. I checked my frigde and found an avocado.
**Too bad I didn’t have onion, tomato or cilantro. There is nothing better than a taco de avocado, con cebolla, tomate y cilantro!
BUT I did find some rice from the night before last. Hmmmm dare I? Sure, why not? DELICIOSO!
I know what you’re probably thinking. My kids and husband think the same thing. I don’t know if it has anything to do with my roots (we ate whatever we had available to us that day, or starved)… or if I’m just weird like that… or maybe a combination of both. But it turned out to be a very delicious lunch! And to think… I almost stopped at Wendy’s for an Asian Chicken Salad!
Anyways, here are some pictures from last night’s performance. I loved how several different Visalia bands fused together for this event! It was an incredible performance from Mezcal, Conjunto Califas, Grupo Sol, and I think? Peasant Uprising. They gave T.Z. Hernandez Spoken Word Performance that extra Central Valley Latin Flavah!
![]() ![]() ![]() **I am so glad that N.L. Belardes met him at last years writers conference and wrote about him on Paperback Writer! Since then, I've shared the links to those articles to all my friends and anyone who cares to listen!
We started off in downtown Bakersfield. We had to meet up with local novelist, N.L. Belardes, who was nice enough to get me two tickets from Dirty Spanglish for the RSD Benefit concert this Saturday. I should have taken a picture, I don’t know why I didn’t. He looked funny with his glasses all fogged up from the weather.
Since I don’t know my way around I just parked and waited. He walked in the rain to meet me and do the exchange. I felt like I was in a movie and I had just pulled over for a drug exchange or something. When he walked up to the window I said in a street rough voice, “Hey dude, you got the stuff.” And he played along and said, “Yeah, I got the stuff.” My daughter looked at us like we were weird. I explained to her we doing a very dangerous, very illegal drug exchange. Everybody knows when you do such exchanges, you MUST change your voice to sound rough and street thug-ish! She immediately understood!
Then he joked that he couldn’t see through his rained on glasses. I suggested he invest in a pair of Windshield Wiper Glasses, like you see in cartoons.
Then we were off. We went directly to Hollywood Blvd. As soon as we got there we noticed a group of people with signs. They were from the Carpenter's Union and they were protesting.
![]() I didn't stop to ask what they were protesting. We were on a mission. .. to do some SHOPPING!
![]() ![]() ![]() Hey look! It's Johnny Depp's hand and feet imprints! Man, he's got small hands. But look at the size of those feet!
MY DAUGHTER: "you know what they say about men with big feet! Tee hee"
ME: "yeah, that they've got BIG........ SHOES!"
![]() Then it was time to eat. HEY STAR SIGHTING… is that Michael Jackson across the street, wearing a red jacket?
![]() They don’t allow cameras at the taping so I don’t have any pictures of that. But I’ll give you all a quick recap of what happened. As we were waiting outside the studio for them to let us in we saw many of the Idols friends and family. Phil’s wife was sitting right next to me while we were waiting outside to get in and she had a bunch of other signs made up and she asked people around her if they wanted a sign. Isn't that sweet? She's soooooo nice. She was talking to everybody and all the ex-Idols were excited to see her and genuinely hugged her tight. And the staff did too.
![]() Sanjaya’s twin sister was sitting one bench over. It was neat to watch her interact with other people that were there who were very obviously family members of the other Idols. This lady asked her for her autograph. She seemed happy that somebody would want it! Then the lady said, " My daughter is such a huge fan........ "
Oh thank you! "..... of Sanjaya.... but I guess you're about as close to him as we're gonna get, hu?" takes a breath... then says, oh yes, Sanjaya, thank you. He's so sweet. And people are so mean to him. Thank you for being a fan! I know that the lady didn't think she was mean, but.... well, what do you think? I felt so bad for that girl. anyways.... let me know if I am reading too much into it. Ok.. we were allowed in the studio one hour before taping. So we had one hour to "socialize?" with each other and the ex-Idols that were there for the show as audience members.
CELEBRITIES THERE:
The Commodores minus Lionel Ritchie, who I'm sure was too busy holding Nichole Ritchie's hair back as she puked her lunch out.
![]() TeriHatcher ... she's very NICE and very beautiful in person!
![]() The cast of Til Death
We almost got Brad Garrets autograph (the show Everybody Loves Raymond... he's the brother... he's in the new show Til Death now) during a commercial but then we had to sit back down. We were able to get JustinGuarinin's autograph, though. He's a cutie!
![]() Can I just say.... that Simon Cowell is HOT in person. I mean HOT. His smile is genuine and cute and sexy and when he looks at you... OMG! The audience LOVES him. when he came out he got the loudest, longest cheers EVER! I think the moans and groans he gets from the audience are strictly for t.v.
Paula was nice but fake-ish "I'm a rock star" nice. Like the little wave she gave us was the "wave, you're the queen on a float in a parade" wave. And somebody yelled out from the BACK ROW "I love you Paula" and she looked directly behind her to the FIRST ROW (towards us) and told US "I love you too" Her body is wow! She's skinny.... nice body. she seems heavier on t.v. Not in a bad way... just heavier. She couldn't have been more than a size 1. PeterNoone(celebrity guest) was adorable. so cheery and sweet! And sooooooo excited to be there, and be performing. It was cute!!! I enjoyed watching him perform and even knew some of the words to his song. Lulu’s(other celebrity guest) performance was ok. I didn’t recognize the song. But she’s a great singer. And if her relatives hadn’t pissed me off I might have cheered for her. RyanSeacrest.... hottttttiiiiieeee! This girl in front of me yelled something out to him. And he took the time to have a quick exchange of words with her. She was so cute! She was so excited/starstruck that she got to "talk" to him. It was an AWESOME experience... and I am soooo glad I went!
Stephanie cried and cried.. then she toughened up and sang her song. At the end of the song she choked, forgot her lines and didn't recover. So the girl with the black hair with pink highlights? She came up behind her and hugged her from the waist and swayed to the music with her and let her know it was ok that she forgot the words. Other than that she sang beautifully and it was sad to see her go. And awkward.. since her family was pretty much right next to us. I felt bad for them.
![]() My evening ended in a very interesting note. I stopped by Kindra’s house to pick up some Girl Scout Cookies. I pulled up to her house, she opened the door and this monster ran out of the house and was about to eat me alive. She ran out and very heroically tackled the monster down , subdued it, and put the shackles back on it. I was safe. Wheew! That was a close one. Then a ghost escaped from her attic, but it was a friendly ghost. I think his name was Harry. Harry The Ghost sat there all alone while we talked for a few minutes. Heaven save his soul!
Ok actually, I'm not sure who I met. I was too embarrassed to ask. But he was VERY NICE and very cute!
***I don't know why some of this is in small letters, and some isn't? but whatever.... LOL
I Sing the Praises of the Campos is a poem by spoken word performer, Tim Z Hernandez. I just LOVE the poem, and the title seemed so fitting for this blog/post!

If I could pick my own planet it would be yellow, because it’d be so close to the sun! Me luvz me sum sun! If you owned your own planet, what would you name it? What would it look like? What kind of people would inhabit it? I’m horrified of the paranormal. Some people love it. Some people even WISH they had ghosts in their home. Not me! I’m a real wuss when it comes to anything like that. I can’t watch any movies that have ghosts or demons in them. I have nightmares. **I’m happy to report no ghosts have escaped from it so far. Baby Twinkie conversation: Baby Twinkie #2: "Mom, what day is it today?" ME: "Monday" Baby Twinkie #2:" REALLY? I thought today was Sunday!" ME: "Did you go to school today? Do you go to school on Sundays?" Baby Twinkie#2: pause.... shrugh...nod.... realization... giggle ... Baby Twinkie#2: "Mom, when I was little I used to think that Sundays had to be sunny." ME: "Really?" ... giggles from both us. Baby Twinkie: "yeah, and I thought Mondays it would rain money!" Me: "REALLY?" Baby Twinkie: "Yeaaaaaaaaaah!" giggle giggle... "Wouldn't it be sooooo cool if it really did rain money on Mondays?" Me: pause.... shrugh...nod.... realization that life through a three year old kid's perspective is much better than real life... giggle ... Me: "Yeah, that WOULD be cool."
My evening didn't go quite as I planned it. Instead, it was way better. My husband called me and said his mom was going to pick the boys up from school and keep them for the evening. So in my mind, I thought three things! 1. I could take a very needed NAP 2. I could ask my husband if he wants to go have drinks somewhere for some very needed "us" time. 3. I could read a good book after making a very quick dinner. Well, I get home and my husband informs me he's going to a friends house for some very needed "him" time. And the boys were going to be dropped off in thirty minutes. No big deal. I was already on lazy mode. So I figured I'll go to my room, and watch movies. Usually when I do this the boys will follow me and we'll cuddle and watch t.v. together, while they share their day with me. Well, my kids had a different idea. Baby Twinkie #1 brought his little cousin over to play. Baby Twinkie #2 wanted me to help him build a Leprechaun Trap. Here are the results. Everything you need for a successful Leprechaun Trap!
Baby Twinkie #2 gets started!
Building Leprechaun Traps are SERIOUS business. First, we have to paint a rainbow. Everybody knows they love rainbows!
Then, we have to put some gold, jewelry or whatever shiny objects we can find IN the rainbow. Leprechauns LOVE shiny stuff.
Leprechauns are like children. They don't like getting told what to do. They are honery little buggers and will always do the opposite of what you tell them to. So we're gonna trick them! We're going to pretend we want them to STAY OUT...
We *heart* Leprechauns. So our "No Leprechauns Allowed sign" is in the shape of a heart!
The end result. We sure do hope our hard work pays off and we catch us a Leprechaun! What do you think? Do you think it will work?
Yes, so while my evening definitely did NOT go as planned, I think it turned out WAY better than what I'd imagined! What do you think?
I recently sent out a myspace bulletin. "Who's going to the bakotopia.com CD release party?" My beautiful bakotopian friend Julie Jordan Scott answered back, that she'd love to meet me there AFTER her performance in the Vagina Monologues, at the Empty Space Theatre. I said WHAT? WHEN? WHERE? I wanna go! I'd just caught part of it on HBO and was intrigued. She gave me the details, and my sister The Raven and I went to support our theatre-tastic friend! I don't really know how to describe it or what to say about it other than to say if you've never been to one, you need to go! It's funny, it's witty, it's smart, it's sad, it's powerful. Oh, and there were some older ladies in the audience and they were sooo cute. They giggled every single time somebody said, vagina, or a substitute word for it. From Va-jay-jay, to the P-word, etc. I thought for sure they were gonna pee their pants during a "my vagina is mad" rant. And the taking back/reclaiming of the c-u-n-t word. It was interesting to see the different generations, and how far we've come! It's no longer a "no no" or a "cookie" or a "poonany!" The AWESOME, powerful, beautiful, empowering all woman cast of Bakersfield's own Vagina Monologues!
Notice the costumes? Each woman chose and dressed like a woman of the past and present that has made an impact in women's right, broken barriers, etc. I loved trying to guess who they were. At the end of the show they shared with us who they were and why they picked them.
My sister, The Raven and I enjoying the show! (notice the brown purse I'm holding.. it was featured in one of my bloggys) click here to read all about it.
By the way, the guy that took this picture for us asked us if our "vaginas were enjoying the show" hahah It was so funny, we were cracking up! I love the way they did the stage.. wrapped it completely in newspaper. I'm sure it represents headlines around the world about battered women, rapes, etc.
Then they blacked out the walls and covered it with empowering quotes from lots and lots of strong women. From Anne Frank, to Mae West. They were neat to read while we were waiting for the show to start.
