Bakersfield Sound Trivia Quest: I listened to Matt's advice on My Christmas dinner with Merle

Welcome to the blog n roll game, Bakersfield Sound Trivia Quest. I'm Dr. BLT, and I'll be your humble host. Today's question is based on the fictional song about a Christmas dinner I alledgedly had with Merle Haggard. The song is called My Christmas Dinner with Merle Haggard. I first introduced this song in the form of lyrics but those lyrics have changed in accordance with a little advice from Matt (the man who runs this blog community), who suggested I throw a little alcohol in the mix.

You must answer both trivia questions to receive your free copy of the CD (you must be one of the first 1,000 to attend the CD release party, and you must be picked up at the CD release party to receive your prize).

To receive the second question and to hear enough of the song to be able to answer both of the questions, you'll need to go underground:

Bakersfield Sound Underground

Here is your first question:

1. Name the drink mentioned in the song that Merle Haggard pours for Dr. BLT.

Orange Christmas: When ice, snow and hardship dampen our holiday spirits

Ice and snow during the holidays can be romantic, but it can also be ravaging. Such is the case of the chilling frost of 1937 and the great frost of 1990.

Many are facing unspeakable hardship this Thanksgiving/Christmas season. When you listen to the music of the first wave of Bakersfield sound artists, you can tell that many found comfort and strength in their music that helped them survive the great depression.

In facing hard times, sometimes it's therapeutic and simply helpful in practical terms, to look back on the past, to other difficult times. In doing so, we learn how people survived and, in some cases, thrived. With such retrospection, we can learn how communities worked together for the good of all, with few resources at their disposal...

Read ahead, and here the remix of Orange Christmas, a previously unreleased Dr BLTrack that was used to raise money for victims of the chilling frost of 1990.

Long Road to Christmas: Song inspired by Merle Haggard will aid vicitms of economic crisis

One of the recurrent themes in my forthcoming Christmas CD, Ice and Snow (scheduled for release at a party at Russo's on December 6 at 7 pm) is the anticipated and as-yet-unanticipated effects of the economic downturn on Christmas. The brand new, original song I am about to introduce to you is one of those songs representing that theme.

50 percent of profits from the first 1,000 internet downloads of this song will go to an as-yet-unannounced charity.

One of my favorite Merle Haggard songs is If We Make it Through December. Long Road to Christmas was inspired by that song. It will be used to raised money to help those directly afflicted by the economic downturn. You can sample it and read the lyrics at the place it's featured today. Where else?

words and music by Dr BLT © 2008

In this world we face so many trials
so many heartaches we must endure
a tragic flight on the shores of New York city
so many lives crushed beneath the driftin' sea
so many times we wanna hang our heads and cry
so weary from the battle
so many times we wanna
lay down and die
but we will never go home
we will never go home

another shore so many will remember
that D-day battle off the shores of Normandy
the allied forces faced inclement weather
so many lives crushed beneath the bitter sea
the soldiers tasted bullets
at Point De La Perci
but heroes such as Moody, Dawson
and General Montgomery refused to go home
they would never go home

sometimes we cry
sometimes we scream
sometimes we wanna wake up from
terror's dark dream
we wanna go home
we just wanna go home
until the sovereign general beckons
it's time to go home
