Watching British pop export Lily Allen perform is like a vacation in the Bahamas wearing bovver boots. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Making her U.S. rounds to promote her stateside debut and new CD, &amp;quot;Alright, Still,&amp;quot; Allen sold-out her only LA appearance at The Music Box at The Henry Fonda Theater, on Monday, February 5th, as part of MTV&#039;s Discover or Download Tour.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Allen, who also happens to be the daughter of actor / producer Keith Allen, and goddaughter to late-Clash frontman, Joe Strummer, is another internet promo phenom. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Showcasing her songs on the popular MySpace, and building a fan base in the UK, it was only a matter of time before she would reach the US underground scene and ultimately MTV, where her message of female empowerment has struck a chord with fans, looking to wipe Spice &amp;quot;Girl Power&amp;quot; from memory.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Outside the Fonda, fans lined up, scalpers harrassed, and security was tight for the 21 year-old singer, whose sound is reminiscent of the Two-Tone days of ska music by bands like The Specials, and Madness, but with a hip-hop element similar to fellow Brit / Sri Lankan rapper, M.I.A., and a dash of Cibo Matto added for good measure. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
With a lone DJ as an opening act onstage, Allen took the stage on schedule as the clock struck 10pm. LA crowds tend to get restless quickly, and Blackberry&#039;s were in full-effect throughout a crowd that can best be described as, &amp;quot;Silverlake arthouse meets Beverly Hills couture.&amp;quot; Not that it should be a surprise to anyone. Allen is rumored to be the next face of Chanel, and her music is in constant rotation on LA&#039;s independent music champion, Indie 103.1FM, where Allen&#039;s song &amp;quot;Smile,&amp;quot; was premiered on DJ Sal Bisla&#039;s syndicated radio show, Passport Approved.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Spotted in the crowd was a &amp;quot;semi-drunk,&amp;quot; but very fab, blogger &lt;strong&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.perezhilton.com&quot;&gt;Perez Hilton&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;, and musician / actress Jenny Lewis, who much to my delight informed me that she, &amp;quot;Also drives a Ford Focus.&amp;quot; &lt;br /&gt;

Heavy on the upbeat, and even thicker on groove thanks to her excellent back-up band, that included a 3-piece horn section, a booming bass player, guitar, and keys, Allen entered the stage wearing a short, white dress making quite the classy fashion statement rarely seen on a popster, unless you&#039;re Christina Aguilera (lately.) Like a reluctant diva, Allen&#039;s easy-going demeanor surfaced immediately. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;quot;Hello, LA!,&amp;quot; shouted Allen, before quickly jumping into her latest single, &amp;quot;LDN,&amp;quot; followed by other strong cuts off &amp;quot;Alright, Still,&amp;quot; including &amp;quot;Knock &#039;Em Out,&amp;quot; &amp;quot;Shame For You,&amp;quot; adapting the melody of Dawn Penn&#039;s &amp;quot;No, no, no,&amp;quot; &amp;quot;Nan You&#039;re A Window Shopper,&amp;quot; and &amp;quot;Not Big,&amp;quot; about and dedicated to, according to Allen, &amp;quot;guys with small penises.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Vocally strong and with warm, confident enthusiasm, Allen isn&#039;t the most energetic live performer; however, what she lacks in energy, she clearly makes up for in charm. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Flirting with fans, Allen is the girl you&#039;d like to down pints with at the pub, with a spliff while throwing F-bombs at annoying mugs.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
As a follow-up to Gwen Stefani&#039;s &amp;quot;lovers reggae / ska chick,&amp;quot; original style, Allen is no imitator. Where Stefani&#039;s style exudes a baby-doll innocence, Allen&#039;s look is rough, but refined. Think 60&#039;s model Twiggy meets Marianne Faithfull during her best Mick Jagger days. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Mid-way through her set, Allen performed a duo of covers by Keane &amp;quot;Everybody&#039;s Changing,&amp;quot; and The Kooks, &amp;quot;Naive,&amp;quot; both to a reggae beat, then soonafter announced she was back to her own music, which was &amp;quot;better than theirs,&amp;quot; according the singer. &lt;br /&gt;

Closing her 60 min. set with the breakout hit, &amp;quot;Smile,&amp;quot; a song not to be confused with the classic Charlie Chaplin song of the same name about looking at the brighter side of life, Allen&#039;s &amp;quot;Smile,&amp;quot; is an ode to the art of a jilted lover&#039;s revenge. &lt;br /&gt;

Leaving the stage, but returning for an encore to perform &amp;quot;Blank Expression,&amp;quot; by The Specials, and the hilarious &amp;quot;Alfie,&amp;quot; about a lazy brother who spends all his time smoking weed and playing video games, it was the perfect ending to a show that lived up to its hype, further establishing Allen as the soundtrack to summer.&lt;br /&gt;

It all started with a very long drive from Delano, Ca to Marysville, Cali. Although long, it was quite pleasant and enjoyable, mostly due to the soundtrack of Fieldy&amp;rsquo;s Dreams, Follow the Leader, KoRn, See You On The Other Side, and Life Is Peachy. Cruizn with the top down did not hurt either, and the scenery was ever changing from fields of crops, to rivers, grasslands to housing tracts, and finally, the signature buildings of the state capitol. But even then, there was a bit more. Marysville is out in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by golden grasslands and foothills off in the eastern distance. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
My KoRnkid Erica and I arrived in Marysville at last, and after a small break, set off to see the amphitheatre where we would see our favorite people in the world the very next day. While we expected to find fans camping out and partying, we found nobody at all out in the middle of nothing at all. We said, &amp;ldquo;people must not get excited around here&amp;rdquo;! So we drove on into the parking lot of the venue and around to the side gate. Nobody in sight and the gate open just begged for a little investigation. So we jumped out the g-ride and went on in. We were in awe because the theatre looked smaller than we were expecting, but had a nice green hill rising up to the north of the stage, with the stage facing it. Just when we were about to get a closer look, these dudes on a golf cart (a.k.a. the golf cart police) pulled up and said to me,&amp;rdquo; What are you doing? Are you aware that you are trespassing?&amp;rdquo; I said, &amp;ldquo;Oh, I am very sorry, we just wanted to see what the stage looked like. We will leave.&amp;rdquo; They tried to look serious but did not say any more, they just kind of smirked and I think that they were holding back smiles as they said, &amp;ldquo;well, you will get to see it all tomorrow&amp;rdquo;.&amp;nbsp; Then we went back out to the car grudgingly, and I thought, there has to be something else. What it ended up being was spinning broadies and burning out in the big ass parking lot for a few minutes. I was having so much fun that I did not even see those sneaky little golf cart police going over to the gate and locking it. So when we went to leave, the gate was locked. We sat there for a few minutes and finally, here they came, poking along towards the gate. I just smiled and said, &amp;ldquo;Thank you&amp;rdquo;, to which they replied with a smile, &amp;ldquo;You won&amp;rsquo;t get locked in if you don&amp;rsquo;t spend so much time burning out in the parking lot&amp;rdquo;. Ha, ha, very funny. We all were smiling then. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
As the night ensued, we realized that a small chronic break was in order. We decided to drive up to Citrus Heights to find our good bud Leah and steal her away for a little while, in order to cruize in anticipation of the next day&amp;rsquo;s events and soothe our rabid souls, at least for a brief time. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Back to the hotel we go. There we were, waiting with baited breath. Everything was laid out! The KoRnrows on my head were wrapped in tissue in what resembled a big ass mummy hat, to keep them fresh for the Meet and Greet. I don&amp;rsquo;t think either of us could sleep very well, it was just too much to take!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Ahhhh, the day of the show. We woke up at 6 in the morning and got our pimpin&amp;rsquo; on, were looking our best, and then went out and put the top down to cruize on over to the amphitheatre! When we got there, we could see that someone who was managerially in error had set the entrance time for fans to 11 in the morning, yet it was only 9 at that time. They told us to go over to the other side of the overpass, about 2 miles up the road, and wait with everyone else. We headed over there and hung out with a few other fans for a while. I had a FVT poster to take to the Meet and Greet for signing, and had tried to get to the store early in the day to find a poster tube, but came out with a roll of Hot Wheels wrapping paper instead (hey, it was the thickest tube I could find in that damned Wal Mart!) So here I was on the side of the road trying to cut this wrapping paper tube in half with a barbed wire fence because no one had anything else that would do it. These kids were parked in front of us, and asked us if we had anything to pick splinters out of skin. One of them had tried to climb the highway sign, just for fun. He had some gnarly ass splinters all in his hand! So I dug them out with some sharpened piece of metal, and he was grateful. Just a little pain therapy to calm you down when you are all nervous. It always seems to help. But not long after than, my anxiety got the best of me and I sped off up the road, and went and parked at this old, haunted, abandoned house for a little while so that we could keep an eye on the venue which was just up the road. When that got old, I went on up to the gate again, told them that we were from the KoRn Promotional Team, and that we needed to get in so that we could hang posters and hand out promotional materials. Then the guy at the gate who was really cool said, &amp;ldquo;Oh, you should have told me that you were here to work earlier, go on in and park over on the side with all the workers&amp;rdquo;. We could have just gone in any gate at that point and not waited in line at all, because there were so many people milling around everywhere that no one would have paid and leave to us. But we were good KoRnkids and went around the front of the venue to wait in line with everyone else. We were 4th and 5th in line, and stayed out there for several more hours before we got to go into the venue. I knew that I had to check in with the box office about the Meet and Greet, but they had no information, which ended up being an ongoing situation for the majority of the day. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
After we got into the venue, we saw a myriad of booths set up. There were shirts, pipes, signed CD&amp;rsquo;s, all kinds of food, beverages of many types, and lots of crazy KoRn fans! Erica and I headed down to the floor area but had to wait in line for a while with others to get our wristbands. Finally, they let us down there and the first thing to go through my mind was, &amp;ldquo;fuck, its concrete!&amp;rdquo; But it was all good. I am going to keep it brief with the other bands because I am all about KoRn, and I did miss some of them due to continual checking with the unorganized management about the Meet and Greet. Droid came on First, followed by Bullets and Octane, then Walls of Jericho (which had a very energetic and kikass singer), then Deadsy, and finally Bury Your Dead. Next up was Direngrey, which I missed, and then 10 years, which I enjoyed thoroughly. Flyleaf was somewhat shocking with Lacey looking like Samara and having an overall sick stage presence that was great. I missed Stonesour, but heard them from backstage during the meet and greet. Deftones had a great set and everyone rocked out to it. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
But let&amp;rsquo;s get to business, people! The Meet and Greet of KoRn. Finally, I got my pass, after endless harassment of the management by myself and several other street teamers, namely, Chamber and FamousnoRcal. The passes were the blue stars with the KoRn Key again. They also gave out some confusing printed instructions on where to go, and after being paraded around for a while, I finally found my way there. During my wanderings, I got to go in another gate by the backstage and watch everyone walking around by the tour buses, which was really cool. I got to the actual gate at last and began to kick it. There were some hateful ass people there that should have given their passes to true KoRn fans. It is the grievance of my heart that they were allowed to molest the integrity of this sacred event with the scourge of what they call their selves. Some dumb ass whores from&amp;rsquo; the 98 rock radio station were there, and no I am not just saying this. They were saying, &amp;quot;this is taking way too fucking long, and do you really want to meet them anyway, and that it was lame because they were lagging, that the wait was not worth it, and that they should hurry the fuck up&amp;rdquo;! This shit they were saying about my favorite people in the world and I just had to stand there and put up with it. Oh, the anger. Oh, the patience I have gained in my old age, enough not to rip their stupid fake asses open just for the pleasure of not being kicked out of the venue. Then there was even another stupid bitch from the radio station who said that she really was not that excited to meet them because when she had before, they were &amp;ldquo;rude&amp;rdquo; to her. Whatever. She went on bitching the whole time she was standing there! It was realllllly bad. AAARRRGGGHHH! Enough already. I feel better. I hope they all read this!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We were all lined up against the wall, and I looked across the way and saw Jonathan standing by a Cadillac, speaking to someone. It was so nice to see him looking well and having a good time. After that, they came on over and began to conversate with the fans. James started at the end nearest me, and Jonathan and David started at the far end of the line of fans (plus some fuct up people who need to die). I was glad to see James, and he stopped, said hello, and then gave me an autograph. He looked a little faded but in great spirits. Finally came my favorite person in life, Jonathan Houseman Davis. He was wearing a tan t-shirt with a vintage batik print and some distressed blue jeans. His hair looked slightly shorter than the last time I saw him, but looked gorgeous nonetheless. He actually stopped when he started walking up to me, and I said &amp;ldquo;Hi there&amp;rdquo;. You won&amp;rsquo;t believe the reply:&amp;nbsp; &amp;ldquo;Hey babe&amp;rdquo;. That was the best, I have gotta say! I made him a gift which was a purple velvet drawstring bag with a Kern County Sheriff patch on the front that I had modified to read KoRn County Sheriff. There were some special things inside as tokens of my appreciation. I gave it to him, and he smiled, then he slipped the strings over his wrist. I told him of my best KoRn friend John David Olsen which has now left this place, and asked if he would please sign the poster RIP Little John. He said that he was sorry, and did me that huge favor, as John looked down, smiling. As Jonathan continued down the line, he had the velvet satchel on his arm. David came next and I thanked him for the great party in Santa Monica. He said that is was really fun, and then signed my poster. That was a most beautiful memory, all under a glowing sunset of amber, hot pink, fuchsia, and purple streaks of clouds as the sun sat below a northern Cali sky and Jonathan walked away to Stonesour&amp;rsquo;s Through the Glass. That is the stuff that dreams are made of.&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;
Can you believe all of the details? We have not even gotten to the meat of the story yet, what everyone has been waiting for. Our favorite band of all time, KoRn, takes the stage. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
First, there was a lengthy sound check and preparation to make certain that all of the sound bugs form earlier on in the day had been eradicated. We could hear the guitars, the bass, the drums, and the vocal testing going on. Familiar faces walked about all over the stage, across which was drawn a gorgeous blood red velvet curtain. Finally, the Nubian Princess came out, the signature microphone stand of Jonathan. The tension heightened, it must not be much longer now. The crowd writhed. Erica, Leah, and I were up in front dead center. Those two were against the fence and I was behind them (which is probably a good thing because I am so tall!) At last, the curtain was drawn back to reveal a huge stage set that was grander than any I had seen in the past. Amplifiers adorned with the SYOTOS art were spread across the stage. David&amp;rsquo;s chrome drum set could be seen glimmering on a small platform midstage and set back a bit. There was a huge ramp across the very back of the stage in front of the screen with stairs leading down to both sides, which the members of KoRn used occasionally during their set to get a better look at the massive crowd. I had never seen this before, but it seemed like they enjoyed it as much as everyone else did! &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The boys started coming out. Munky, David, Fieldy, and then our beloved Jonathan. He strutted out wearing the pinstriped kilt we have all been familiar with lately in the FVT photos, with tall black socks, black shoes, and a black top. They started with an intro melody and then went into Right Now. The sound was excellent and vibrated every bone in my body. The crowd was wicked, but went even sicker when the set evolved into Twist. The howlings, rantings, and ravings of Jonathan filled everyone&amp;rsquo;s soul, as he set forth the lyrics we love so. Speaking of love, next up was Love Song, which was a virtual mosh pit of a song, with crowd surfing, eyes rolling back in one&amp;rsquo;s head, and gorgeous views in every direction of KoRn jamming out. Well, what comes next after Love Song, I ask you? ADIDAS! You know that this is one of the all time favorites with just about everybody, and the energy was there to be felt. The bass pounded, thanks to the Field-dogg. Thoughtless rocked our world with heartfelt vocals and deep melodies. Falling Away From Me provided a beyond reality experience into the deep realms of feelings that we have all experienced at one time. Next was some gnarly talk that we love so well off from the end of Open Up, which reminds me a bit of goblins!&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;
Jonathan next helped us in Coming Undone. Everyone was ecstatic, and I know that many of us had been waiting for that. Energy in the entire band could be seen as they rushed around the stage! Munky and Fieldy got next to each other, faced each other, and jammed, which was a rarely seen sight, but very cool! We all know that we Got The Life when we get to go to events like this; it is worth all of the other crap that we live daily because of these times! Throw Me Away was a bit mellower, which everyone needed because of the sheer intensity of the crowd and the pit. I loved to sit still for a second and just admire. &lt;br /&gt;
Allow me to regress; at three points between songs, Jonathan came out with a massive firehose, which those of us that had been following the FVT reviews had expected. He took off to the right stage and popped that sucker on. It sprayed, and would not quit. The feeling was the best, it saved our lives! But what was even better was the look of pleasure, twisted yet happy, that Jonathan got on his face every time he sprayed us with his hose. It was like they should have been playing Getting Off in the background! Ahhh, sweet memories. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Further regressing, and speaking of sweet memories, I have to put this in for both my memories and all of those out there (you know who you are) that saw this as well. Mind you, I was up front, middle, about a couple of feet below the stage floor. Jonathan was right above me when he stood at his microphone stand. He was rocking as we all know and love, and bless him for wearing that kilt! It is sewn and put together so well so as to not be too hot, and that is provides adequate ventilation. It loves to flip up a bit with every jump and headbanging, but reacts especially nicely with foot stamping! And yes, the material is quite becoming how is fits all the way around. Lovely, beautiful memories which I will forever cherish!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Back to the meat, y&amp;rsquo;all. Ha, ha. Cameltosis was a much welcomed digression back to the classic KoRn that we were happy to behold. Besides being one of my favorites, it was a kikass tune that rocked everyone&amp;rsquo;s world, even in an instrumental version! Then came the time in each concert when the music of bagpipes rises to the heavens for Little John, Shoots and Ladders. Only one word to describe that: sick! Chino Moreno came on stage next, and it was Family Values style in the classic sense as Jonathan and Chino went back and forth. They were having so much fun! Politics evolved into Freak on a Leash as we all stood in awe, savoring the moments. Then the lights went dim and the boys took a break. Rob Patterson came back onto a dimly lit stage and kept our attention while the rest of the band snuck out to the middle of the crowd by the soundboards while we were not paying attention to what was going on behind us! Then the lights came on in the middle of the crowd, and there stood KoRn, on a raised platform, to rip my heart out and bring a tear to my eyes with a most beautifully done acoustic set of Hollow Life. Words cannot describe the echoic sounds of Jonathan&amp;rsquo;s voice paired with the recent evolution into the dark acoustic jammings of the band. Everyone stood in awe. It was classic KoRn. Then they escaped back to the stage and made us all rock our asses off with Twisted Transistor, a favorite of all! Next came the rarely live played Y&amp;rsquo;all Want A Single? This was an experience I never had before. Now I feel complete! I love Jonathan saying, &amp;ldquo;Fuck that, fuck that&amp;rdquo; in that oh so low growl! Jonathan then thanked the crowd for all we had done as KoRn fans and told up that they would be nowhere without us. It was a very special night because it was his son, Pirate&amp;rsquo;s first show ever, and he could be seen to the side of the stage as Jonathan incited a huge cheer in celebration of that sacred event! The whole show was filmed, and cameras could be seen at various places. I would not be surprised and will be pleased to see parts of it again someday on the next KoRn DVD! We came to the last song of the night *tear* with the song that started it all, Blind. Everyone knew that this was their last chance to rock it hard as fuck, and that is just what we all did. Midway through the song, huge cannons shot out confetti in silver, purple, and blue, which floated down toward the crowd in glimmering diamonds, and just made the experience ever more beautiful, memorable, and forever cemented in all of our memories. &lt;br /&gt;

&lt;/strong&gt;Singer-songwriter Julieta Venegas is not only Mexico&amp;rsquo;s most famous accordion- slinging rockera, she also happens to be one of its best kept secrets.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Until now. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Venegas, recently performing to a packed house at LA&amp;rsquo;s Wiltern Theater Nov. 17, is currently experiencing another triumphant phase in her career as an artist, continuing to reach even more fans.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Though she declined to give her age &amp;mdash; &amp;ldquo;You can ask,&amp;rdquo; Venegas said, followed by laughter, but no answer &amp;mdash; a compilation of Web sources shows the singer turning 36 the day after Thanksgiving, Nov. 24.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Backstage at the Wiltern, Venegas prepared for another sold-out show by visiting with family and friends before meeting the massive audience eagerly awaiting her inside the theater&amp;rsquo;s main ballroom.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;ldquo;These are the first dates we&amp;rsquo;ve been doing in the states for &amp;lsquo;Limon y Sal,&amp;rsquo;&amp;rdquo; said Venegas of the evening&amp;rsquo;s show and subsequent California tour (promoting her new CD) starting in Los Angeles, then moving on to Fresno and San Francisco. &amp;ldquo;We&amp;rsquo;ve been doing mainly dates in Mexico, Spain and Central America.&amp;rdquo;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Born in Long Beach, Calif., Venegas grew up in Tijuana, Mexico. Keeping a foot on both sides of the border, Venegas was automatically influenced by the language and cultures of the US and Mexico via &amp;mdash; what else &amp;mdash; TV.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;ldquo;It was easier to watch American TV than to watch Mexican TV growing up,&amp;rdquo; she said. &amp;ldquo;That&amp;rsquo;s how I learned English, and TV is where you learn from as a kid.&amp;rdquo;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Beginning with piano lessons as a child, Venegas began playing keyboards while still in high school with Tijuana alternative rock band, Chantaje &amp;mdash; a band that would later evolve into Tijuana No!, credited as one of the most influential groups in Latin alternative music.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
That&amp;rsquo;s when Venegas realized her passion to write and perform.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;ldquo;I think it was from then that I realized the creative side of music, not just interpreting classical music, but improvising, writing and singing,&amp;rdquo; said Venegas, who left the band to pursue a solo career. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Reaching her goal of becoming an independent artist, Venegas released her solo debut, 1997&amp;rsquo;s &amp;ldquo;Aqui&amp;rdquo; followed by &amp;ldquo;Bueninvento&amp;rdquo; in 2000. Both releases were warmly embraced by fans and critics for their strong musical poetics, but it was with the release of &amp;ldquo;Si&amp;rdquo; in 2003 that things heated up for Venegas.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In 2004, she picked up both a Latin Grammy and an MTV Latino award for the same album, establishing her star power. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Still riding high on the popularity of &amp;ldquo;Si,&amp;rdquo; Venegas dropped her latest CD, &amp;ldquo;Limon y Sal&amp;rdquo; in 2006, again to rousing response. Like her prior release, &amp;ldquo;Limon&amp;rdquo; is filled with songs of love, sprinkled with the hangover of relationships lost.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;ldquo;I like writing about love, the beginning and the end of it. It&amp;rsquo;s what inspires me,&amp;rdquo; she said. &amp;ldquo;&amp;lsquo;Si,&amp;rsquo; was an experiment for me because I had never written a happy love song before. I knew how to write about feeling sad and melancholy, but never about being happy and sure of something.&amp;rdquo;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Incorporating elements of modern rock with folk music traditions, Venegas&amp;rsquo; signature use of the accordion in her performances also attracts attention. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;ldquo;When I started playing the accordion, it wasn&amp;rsquo;t just for norte&amp;ntilde;o music, it was because of how artists like Los Lobos and Tom Waits were using it &amp;mdash; it has so many references&amp;rdquo; she said. &amp;ldquo;It&amp;rsquo;s something very organic, like I&amp;rsquo;m touching the earth, with the air and strength of it.&amp;rdquo;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
For someone experiencing this current wave of success, you&amp;rsquo;d think Venegas would be living glamorous on the road, traveling with a posse of diva-like proportions.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
To the contrary, the singer&amp;rsquo;s backstage dressing room is quite modest. Noticeably absent is the flash associated with a celebrity concerned with her public image. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;ldquo;I can&amp;rsquo;t think of myself as an image, and this is what I want them to think about me,&amp;rdquo; Venegas said. &amp;ldquo;I just like to be honest and express myself the way I want to. I&amp;rsquo;m pretty shy.&amp;rdquo;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Recording mainly in Spanish &amp;mdash; but aware of the crossover success of other Latin artists like Ricky Martin and Shakira &amp;mdash; does Venegas plan on recording in English any time soon?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;ldquo;I don&amp;rsquo;t want to say never, but it&amp;rsquo;s not something that interests me,&amp;rdquo; Venegas said. &amp;ldquo;I like writing songs in the language that I&amp;rsquo;m used to feeling things and speaking with &amp;mdash; the best way to know my music is to know it they way I&amp;rsquo;m inspired to write it.&amp;rdquo;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Apart from the many statuettes and awards she&amp;rsquo;s received over the course of her career, Venegas also feels that being recognized for your artistry comes in a more rewarding form.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;ldquo;On a personal level, they&amp;rsquo;re great,&amp;rdquo; she said of her awards, &amp;ldquo;but at the same time, the important things happen when you connect with the public at a show, when people are listening to your album and somebody comes up to me and says, &amp;lsquo;Hey, you know, I heard this song, and this is what I thought, or this is what happened to me, and it&amp;rsquo;s totally describing what I feel.&amp;rsquo;&amp;rdquo;&lt;br /&gt;

                                    &lt;font size=&quot;3&quot;&gt;It&#039;s a sad day on the Streets of Bakersfield..&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Buck Owens, the King of Bakersfield, has died....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Last night Fatt Katt (of The Von Zippers,) Manny G (Vanity Avenue,) and I were sitting at Fishlips talking about how much fun we had on St. Patty&#039;s Day. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Just this morning, I had just finished talking to my girlriend about my Fishlips round table with Fatt Katt and Manny G, when I read the news online...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Flashback to last night...&lt;br /&gt;Before Manny G popped in to Fishlips, Fatt Katt was telling me about his band&#039;s latest recording project, the importance of having the &amp;quot;Bakersfield Sound&amp;quot; prominently layered in the mix, and how much he was looking forward to presenting a special song to Buck onstage at The Crystal Palace, during one of their upcoming scheduled performances.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; For those of you who don&#039;t know, Fatt Katt and his band, The Von Zippers, have been the house band at Buck Owens&#039; Crystal Palace for a few years now. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; To hear the the excitement in Fatt Katt&#039;s voice talk about his hero, Buck Owens, and the experiences he&#039;s had with the man over the years was really cool, not only as a member of the Bakersfield music scene, but a musician who has performed on the same bill as the man himself..&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; I&#039;m still shaking when I remember our long conversation about Buck and what he means to so many people.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Fatt Katt told me all about how...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; &amp;quot;The Bakersfield Sound was created by Buck Owens.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; &amp;quot;Leo Fender personally handcrafted Buck&#039;s guitars for him and personalized his amps.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; &amp;quot;There are Fender guitar amps with a pre-set button on them, labeled &amp;quot;Bakersfield Sound.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; &amp;quot;Buck insisted that there be an accordian on his hit, &amp;quot;Streets of Bakersfield,&amp;quot; as a tribute to the Mexican people he so dearly loved.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; &amp;quot;The Crystal Palace is set-up to stay open for 40 years after Buck&#039;s death.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; &amp;quot;Buck lived life to the fullest.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; We swapped stories about about how Buck made country superstar Clint Black wait in the lobby of The Crystal Palace when Black made a surprise visit after he performed at the local Wal-Mart. Buck never came out of his office.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Fatt Katt was hoping Buck would give him one of his prized guitars after a rave session about it&#039;s beauty. Buck then looked at him and said, &amp;quot;You&#039;d really like that guitar, wouldn&#039;t ya&#039;?&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; &amp;quot;Well you write me out a check for $5,000.00 and I&#039;ll give it to ya,&amp;quot; replied Buck, and walked out the door to an eruption of laughter.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; I remember going to one of Buck&#039;s many birhday bashes at The Palace, and watching a packed house with fans and friends wish Buck many more years of life and laughter. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; So many amazing memories at The Crystal Palace.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; My band, Mento Buru, has had the privilege of performing on The Crystal Palace stage many times, most times right after Buck Owens himself!! Talk about imtimidation!! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Sitting on the side of the stage soaking up the country vibes, laughing at Buck&#039;s (mostly bad)&amp;nbsp; jokes, were always the highlight of each visit to The Palace. My parents celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary there and Buck dedicated a song to them even joking about how he was amazed at how many years my parents were together. I guess it is pretty amazing if you&#039;ve lived the life Buck has..&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; I always hoped to meet Buck before our sets, but most times Buck would say, &amp;quot;Goodnight,&amp;quot; and dash into a car waiting outside. I guess I missed my chance.....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Not being a country performer and being invited to perform at The Crystal Palace always intrigued me, but we weren&#039;t stupid, we always said, &amp;quot;YES!&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Longtime fan and Mento Buru supporter, Rick Peace, always said, &amp;quot;You guys (Mento Buru,) always sound the best when you play at The Crystal Palace.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We must&#039;ve had Buck&#039;s blessing, indeed...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; My buddy and musical compadre&#039;, Rudy Parris, was also a frequent visitor to the Crystal Palace stage. The cause of death was not immediately known. He underwent surgery for throat cancer in 1993 but&lt;br /&gt; maintained a busy schedule in recent years at his Crystal Palace restaurant and nightclub in Bakersfield. He was scheduled to perform there this weekend, according to his official Web site.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; A man of boundless talents, Owens distinguished himself as a singer, guitarist, songwriter, bandleader, music publisher, talent booker, television personality and broadcaster. Although he regularly topped the country charts during the 1960s and early &#039;70s, his greatest recognition came from his role as the grinning co-host of the country music television series, Hee Haw.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Alvis Edgar Owens was born Aug. 12, 1929 in Sherman, Texas. His parents were sharecroppers who moved to Mesa, Ariz., in 1937. It was in that city that Owens got his start in radio when he was 17, performing on the Buck &amp;amp; Britt show on radio station KTYL. In 1948, he married singer Bonnie Campbell, who would later carve out her own career as Bonnie Owens and marry Merle Haggard.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; In 1951, the young couple migrated to Bakersfield, where Owens formed a band, the Schoolhouse Playboys, in which he played saxophone and trumpet. He had also developed his skills as a guitarist. During most of the &#039;50s, he played in the house band at the Blackboard nightclub near Bakersfield. At times, he would venture into Los Angeles to play guitar on sessions for such artists as Tommy Collins, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Sonny James and Gene Vincent. He even got a deal himself with Pep Records in 1955. For that label, he cut several singles, including the rockabilly tune &amp;quot;Hot Dog,&amp;quot; which he recorded under the name Corky Jones. (Owens returned to that song in 1988 for his short-lived comeback effort as a recording artist.)&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Having become acquainted with Owens via his work for other artists, Capitol Records producer Ken Nelson signed him to that label in 1957. Two years afterward, he had his first chart hit, &amp;quot;Second Fiddle&amp;quot; He followed it with three Top 10 singles, including the self-penned &amp;quot;Under Your Spell Again.&amp;quot; Between 1963, when he first reached the top of the charts with &amp;quot;Act Naturally,&amp;quot; and 1972, when he last topped them on his own, Owens scored 20 No. 1 singles and placed another 13 songs in the Top 10. Many that reached the No. 1 spot tended to stay there: &amp;quot;Love&#039;s Gonna Live Here&amp;quot; (1963) for 16 weeks; &amp;quot;I Don&#039;t Care (Just As Long As You Love Me)&amp;quot; (1964), &amp;quot;Before You Go&amp;quot; (1965) and &amp;quot;Think of Me&amp;quot; (1966) for eight weeks each; and &amp;quot;My Heart Skips a Beat&amp;quot; 1964) and &amp;quot;Waitin&#039; in Your Welfare Line&amp;quot; (1966) for seven weeks each. In all, Owens racked up 28 BMI awards for his radio-friendly singles.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; During the late 1950s, Owens moved to the Tacoma, Wash., area. It was here that he met Don Rich (real name Donald Eugene Ulrich), the singing partner who would give Owens&#039; songs the distinctive high, nasalized, heart-in-the-throat pitch that became his vocal trademark. (Rich remained with Owens until he was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1974.)&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Under the tutelage of his manager, the late Jack McFadden, Owens took a serious turn toward capitalism. In 1964, they formed the OMAC booking agency which eventually handled such clients as Haggard, Joe and Rose Maphis, Wynn Stewart, Freddie Hart and Rose Maddox. In 1967, Owens launched his own music publishing company, Blue Book Publishing. (He sold the company to Tree Music Publishing in the 1980s, and his catalog is now a part of the giant Sony/ATV firm.) Moreover, Owens began to acquire and develop radio stations. (In 1999, Clear Channel bought his KNIX-FM in Phoenix for $84 million and his jointly owned KESZ, also in Phoenix, for $58 million.)&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Yet another feature of the Owens empire came through Buck Owens Productions, which produced his syndicated television series, The Buck Owens Ranch Show. Starting in 1966, the show was shot in &amp;quot;batches&amp;quot; in Oklahoma City, much as Hee Haw would later be done in Nashville. In all, 78 half-hour color shows were taped, and the show at its peak aired in around 100 markets. Several of these shows are now available on home video, and excerpts from them were used as country music videos in the late 1980s. Owen&#039;s top-notch band, the Buckaroos, won CMA&#039;s instrumental group of the year awards in 1967 and &#039;68.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Owens teamed with Roy Clark in 1969 to host Hee Haw, originally a show for CBS-TV. CBS dropped it in 1971, but the show continued and became even more successful as a syndicated effort. Besides introducing acts, telling jokes and appearing in skits, Owens and Clark had a &amp;quot;pickin&#039; and grinnin&#039;&amp;quot; spot in each show, and both sang and recorded in the popular Hee Haw Gospel Quartet.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; His recording career sagging, Owens was essentially reduced to being a face of Hee Haw until Dwight Yoakam came along in the mid-1980s. Like Owens, Yoakam was passionate about West Coast country music, and he was loud in his praise of the old master. In fact, Yoakam made so much noise -- including making a personal plea to his idol -- that Owens recorded (and made a music video of) &amp;quot;The Streets of Bakersfield&amp;quot; with him. It went No. 1 in 1988, the last time Owens would view the chart from that vantage point.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Also in 1988, Owens re-signed to his old label, Capitol Records. That union resulted in two albums -- Hot Dog in 1988 and Act Naturally in 1989 -- and five charted singles, none of which reached the Top 20. However, his &amp;quot;Act Naturally&amp;quot; duet with Ringo Starr did make it to No. 27 in 1989. (Starr also sang the lead vocal on the Beatles&#039; 1965 cover version of Owens&#039; hit.) It was accompanied by an amusing &amp;quot;Old West&amp;quot; music video in which Owens&#039; manager, McFadden, played the sheriff and actor Vic Tayback the bartender.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Owens withdrew from his Hee Haw hosting duties in 1986 and was never replaced, although the show continued into 1994. In 1996, he was elected to both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. A gazillion bands landed at Bakersfield&#039;s official outdoor venue for rowdy concerts - Stramler Park in Bakotopialand on Saturday, June 2nd, beginning at 12pm, until 11:30pm!&lt;br /&gt;

Headlining the show was the &#039;08s favorite stonerrific band of merrymen, Kottonmouth Kings, along with LA&#039;s original ska-punksters Fishbone, old school punkeros Guttermouth, screamo dudes with cool hair, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, and Sublime / Pepper / Slightly Stoopid / Bargain Music clone - The Expendables.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
When we first showed up at the fest, we were very impressed with the set-up: five stages with live bands going all day long. We pitched our tent near the mainstage, and hung out most of the day listening to about 20 bands who only knew one type of musical expression - to &lt;em&gt;&lt;font face=&quot;Verdana&quot; color=&quot;#ff0000&quot;&gt;&lt;strong&gt;SCRRREEEAAM!!!&lt;br /&gt;

I can&#039;t remember every band&#039;s name, but I can tell you that From Ritual To Romance, Keruption, State of Insomnia, and the headliners played. Oh yeah, and the headliners!!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Over on the other stages, it was pretty much the same thang...scream, yell, grunt, roar, and so on...&lt;br /&gt;

Finally at about 3:30pm, the official &amp;quot;reggae&amp;quot; stage came alive. Bako homies: Seed, Hayes Field, Mento Buru, and Vanity Avenue, stepped up. It was pretty funny to have all the local reggae / ska bands together, but looking out at the girls and guys who finally got to dance, it was a great idea, Thanks Tim!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
After the local ska / reggae contigent ended their set, it was time for the almighty Fishbone from LA to hit the stage. The kids of Bakersfield were introduced to the godfather&#039;s of the Warped Tour sound and style, and even though the band is pushing the years, they threw down like a bunch of teenagers on their first show. Stage diving, stage diving, and even more stage diving was the theme for their show, but it wasn&#039;t until the band tore into their cover fo Sublime&#039;s &amp;quot;Date Rape,&amp;quot; that the crowd went bonkers. Hopefully after the show, the kids will do their homework and seek out the roots of the skate rock, punk, blah, blah, blah, sound kids are into.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
After Fishbone left, we went back to the reggae stage to see a little OP Stylee. I remember seeing OP for the first time at Cheney&#039;s Lounge next to the Nifty 50&#039;s cafe in SW Bako back in the &#039;90s. The band has aged (as we all have,) but the vibe is still there. Nice to see the boys still kickin&#039; it with a new drum machine (wink-wink.) Angelo Moore from Fishbone was havin&#039; a goodtime watching OP, complete with Mickey Mouse ears and shaved ice...lol.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
After that, the crew was beat, and we took off. Sorry Kottonmouth!! See ya at the next smokeout!&lt;br /&gt;

The show was sold out, and as you will see, the crowd was just as bizarre as the Kings themselves.&lt;br /&gt;

It&#039;s rare that a local show sells out at The Dome, but the Kings are not your ordinary rap / rock group. Associating themselves with the Pro-Marijuana party scene, performing songs like &amp;quot;Still Smokin,&amp;quot; &amp;quot;Fat Sack,&amp;quot; and &amp;quot;Free The Plant,&amp;quot; the Kottonmouth Kings rabid fanbase is an eclectic mix of stoners, frat boys, and partygoing teenagers.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
On an odd note.....Notice how many concertgoers flash a hand sign, resembling the Nazi &amp;quot;SS,&amp;quot; sign&amp;nbsp; in the photos. I asked around to see what the hand flash was all about. According to a lot of local kids, the sign is popular among Oildale youths as a sign of &amp;quot;White Power.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;

Hmmmmm..... It would be unfair to label KMK fans racist, since the band themselves are not flashing the sign in any photos, and they are a rap group, and there are no lyrics claiming neo-Nazi affiliation..&lt;br /&gt;

Oh well, who cares, right? There are a lot sicker groups than the Kottonmouth Kings...One thing for sure, Bakersfield KMK fans love to flip you off..lol.&lt;br /&gt;

                <title>Review: The Noveltown Review - By Greg Goodsell</title>

                                    Of all the literary magazines vying for space at local bookstores, the locally published &lt;a href=&quot;http://noveltown.net&quot;&gt;Noveltown Review&lt;/a&gt; emerges as a breath of fresh air. The project of longtime Bakersfield media gadfly &lt;a href=&quot;http://nlbelardes.com&quot;&gt;Nick Belardes&lt;/a&gt;, the Noveltown Review offers a both fiction and non-fiction essays about today&amp;rsquo;s literary landscape. An oversized magazine boasting slick, shiny covers, the periodical is beautifully laid out. More importantly, the Noveltown Review offers highly accessible prose for readers weary of experimental efforts that often prove to be not worth the effort. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Divided between poetry, and articles, the debut issue features short stories such as &amp;ldquo;Christmas Day&amp;rdquo; by Brad Listi, &amp;ldquo;Taking the Hollows&amp;rdquo; by N. Frank Daniels, Conrad Romo&amp;rsquo;s &amp;ldquo;Make-Up&amp;rdquo; and Susan Henderson&amp;rsquo;s &amp;ldquo;Lady Bug.&amp;rdquo; All are worthwhile. Listi&amp;rsquo;s &amp;ldquo;Christmas Day&amp;rdquo; recounts an annual family ritual done with people &amp;ndash; that for very good reason, one doesn&amp;rsquo;t see the rest of the year. Daniels&amp;rsquo; &amp;ldquo;Taking the Hollows&amp;rdquo; is a very edgy piece justifying heroin addiction. &amp;ldquo;Make-Up&amp;rdquo; is how a natural disaster, in this case, instantly creates a community out of strangers and Henderson&amp;rsquo;s &amp;ldquo;Lady Bug&amp;rdquo; is a harrowing childhood account of a character whose mother loses a battle with mental illness. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The non-fiction articles in the Noveltown Review all deal about the adversity that faces those who pick up the quill. Lauren Baratz-Logsted&amp;rsquo;s &amp;ldquo;The Working Writer&amp;rdquo; stresses the importance of setting goals as a wordsmith, whether it&amp;rsquo;s mainstream acceptance of critical recognition. Of all the non-fiction pieces, N. Frank Daniels&amp;rsquo; &amp;ldquo;2006: The Year of the Lit Scandal&amp;rdquo; is especially telling. Daniels relates how JT Leroy, the alleged male prostitute and author of the books &amp;ldquo;The Heart Is Deceitful Above All things&amp;rdquo; and &amp;ldquo;Sarah&amp;rdquo; was later proven to be Laura Albert, an unpublished woman author. Daniels also cites how James Frey&amp;rsquo;s &amp;ldquo;A Million Little Pieces,&amp;rdquo; about the author&amp;rsquo;s supposed battle with drug addiction was later revealed to be a fraud, forcing talk show diva Oprah Winfrey -- who offered the novel through her book club, to recant her high praise. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
As Daniels later reveals, these authors were all reacting to the demands of the marketplace. (In the case of JT Leroy, however, it was clear at the outset that something was amiss. Highly reclusive, &amp;ldquo;Leroy&amp;rdquo; made very few public appearances, with Albert in highly unconvincing male drag. Asia Argento, who made a film out of Albert&amp;rsquo;s/Leroy&amp;rsquo;s &amp;ldquo;The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things,&amp;rdquo; would unsuccessfully feign ignorance.) The unanswered question is on whether or not these books still have inherent literary value in spite of the facades their authors constructed to gain attention in a short-attention-span world. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Robin Slick takes a cold, heart, yet hilarious look in &amp;ldquo;Psychotic Reaction,&amp;rdquo; about the effect of the Internet blog has on the contemporary literature. Slick wonders if people read her blog for her stories, or because she inexplicably comes up in Google searches for such phrases as &amp;ldquo;photo of world&amp;rsquo;s largest turd!&amp;rdquo; The periodical comes to a conclusion with poetry written by MatildaKay, Jenn Williams and Rich Ferguson and an interview with Rose Castillo Guilbault. All in all, a very satisfying package. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The only real criticism about the debut issue of the Noveltown review is that it&amp;rsquo;s a bit too breezy. This reviewer gobbled up the magazine in a very leisurely two-hour sitting. Always leave them wanting more, I guess&amp;hellip;&lt;br /&gt;

&amp;quot;The Nile opened in 1906 as the Bakersfield Opera House. In 1924 it was renamed the Nile and then remodeled in 1927.&lt;br /&gt;

In 1937 it received a new marquee and an Art Deco renovation designed by S. Charles Lee.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
By the time the building was vacated in 1994, it had been divided into a twin. The Nile wasn&#039;t as large or ornate as S. Charles Lee&#039;s Fox, only a block away, but the Fox&#039;s successful restoration has given downtown business owners hope that something can be done with the Nile.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
However, the Bakersfield Californian reported earlier this year that there are some business owners, given the shortage of downtown parking, who think it would be best to demolish the Nile and put in a parking lot.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;

Santa Barbara transplant, Klarke Garl, sold his successful SB nightclub, &amp;quot;HADES,&amp;quot; in 2005, choosing to devote his energy into creating &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.bakotopia.com&quot;&gt;Bakotopia&lt;/a&gt;land&#039;s newest nightclub, smack dab in the middle of downtown Bakersfield!!&lt;br /&gt;

Garl has decided to stay on the &amp;quot;retro&amp;quot; tip, restoring the infamous &amp;quot;Nile&amp;quot; neon sign with new paint and lights. &lt;br /&gt;

On the inside will be a mini-restaurant, dancefloor, cool lighting, multiple bars, pool tables, and most importantly..a BOOMING sound system! &lt;br /&gt;

It was cold and wet afternoon for Peta activists, Christina Cho and Brandi Valladolid in downtown Bakersfield, on Wednesday, April 5, 2006.&lt;br /&gt;

Armed with a banner that read, &amp;quot;We&#039;d Rather Bare Skin Than Wear Skin,&amp;quot; the two braved, the cold weather, a hundred &amp;quot;oogling&amp;quot; eyes, a flurry of car horns, the local media, and even two young men, &amp;quot;counterprotesting&amp;quot; the ladies of Peta with signs that proclaimed their love for meat!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

&amp;quot;We&#039;re here to let people know that animal cruelty exits all over the world,&amp;quot; proclaimed Peta Activist Christina Cho, who, wearing nothing but a bikini bottom and masking tapes over her breasts, stood proudly and unfazed by the stares from men, looking to catch a glance.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Cho&#039;s partner in the demonstration, Brandi Valladolid, came all the way from Peta headquarters in Norfolk, VA.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;quot;Read the info,&amp;quot; stated Valladolid, as she also stood in high heels, baring it all for curious onlookers.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Bakersfield local, Jeff Chambers, a member of the band controversial local punk rock band, The KooKooNots, heard about the planned Peta visit on the local news.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;quot;We decided to let our voices be heard,&amp;quot; said Chambers, &amp;quot;If they can be out here, so can we.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Jordan Fisher, another member of the band, The KooKooNots, shared the same sentiment.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;quot;We don&#039;t want to cause trouble,&amp;quot; explained Fisher.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The KooKooNots, are not new to controversy.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Recently, the band has become part of a local dispute between, another local with a similar name, The KooKooNauts.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
According to local reports, The &amp;quot;original&amp;quot; KooKooNauts band have accused their rivals of threats and slander. Both bands have a different story, and continue their battle for local punk supremacy.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I confronted both Fisher and Chambers about The KooKooNots / Nauts controversy. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Both laughed.....Busted...&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

For the uninitiated, The Cult represents a rare type of band whose pedigree is bombastic, mystical, psychedelic and generally on the verge of operatic.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

Starting out as Southern Death Cult, restarting as Death Cult until finally ending up as just The Cult, the band&amp;rsquo;s sound started out as a tribal, gothic punk band that was equal parts raw, groovy and shimmery. If you can imagine the sonic equivalent of AC/DC in a car smoking a joint with The Doors and U2 you can get the idea of where they were coming from.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

The band discovered its foundation with &amp;ldquo;Dreamtime, &amp;rdquo;their first complete album as The Cult. It&amp;rsquo;s an album filled with pumped-up anthem-like songs such as &amp;ldquo;Spiritwalker.&amp;rdquo; This led to the album &amp;ldquo;Love&amp;rdquo; and its perennial track &amp;ldquo;She Sells Sanctuary&amp;rdquo; that cemented their reputation as underground icons among fans that coveted alternative music in the mid &amp;lsquo;80s.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

What separated both albums from the rest of the music scene at the time (1983-85) was Billy Duffy&amp;rsquo;s edge-like guitar tones with Jimmy Page riffs and Ian Astbury&amp;rsquo;s lyrical themes (and wardrobe) that lent itself to both the &amp;lsquo;60s as well as Native American shamanism.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
What also set them apart was the coming of their third album &amp;ldquo;Electric.&amp;rdquo;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

Instead of rehashing the same sound they invented, they went to producer Rick Rubin and unleashed the rock. That psychedelic edge I mentioned? Gone, but replaced by a more raw sound that emphasized pain - with &amp;lsquo;70s rock power. I mean, they covered &amp;ldquo;Born To Be Wild!&amp;rdquo; C&amp;rsquo;mon! I still can&amp;rsquo;t tell if they&amp;rsquo;re using a drum machine or just a crappy drummer on most of the album. (I heard they got rid of him by getting him a drum kit and telling him that he should learn how to use it.) Songs like &amp;ldquo;Wildflower&amp;rdquo; and &amp;ldquo;Love Removal Machine&amp;rdquo; guaranteed that they&amp;rsquo;d have at least one greatest hits release that wouldn&amp;rsquo;t suck.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

Their next album, released right in the middle of the hair-band heyday (1988 for the young ones out there) was as if &amp;ldquo;Love&amp;rdquo; and &amp;ldquo;Electric&amp;rdquo; had met, had a kid and named it &amp;ldquo;Sonic Temple.&amp;rdquo; If you&amp;rsquo;re over 29, you&amp;rsquo;ve heard the song &amp;ldquo;Fire Woman.&amp;rdquo; Around this time they became a proven arena rock band and went through more drummers than Spinal Tap. Other albums followed, but none could even remotely bring them back to their previous zenith.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Everyone has many halcyons of musical enlightenment: various times where you get turned on to a band whose image and/or music changes the soundtrack of your life. &amp;ldquo;Love&amp;rdquo; was one of mine.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Whenever anyone mentions how much they can&amp;rsquo;t stand living here in Bakersfield, I tell them the same thing: It&amp;rsquo;s better than Lancaster.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Seriously, it&amp;rsquo;s a city about 30 miles north of L.A. (basically making it a suburb). Lancaster is a metropolitan ghost town that inspires inward dreams of escape or straight out rebellion - and all indoors. Drive southbound on the 14 freeway and you will observe a city where almost no one is outside (they&amp;rsquo;re probably all inside their homes with guns to their heads crying &amp;ldquo;Why Lord, why?!&amp;rdquo;) This is where I was raised for my first 13 years.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

It occurs to me that the reason nostalgia becomes more potent and powerful as we get older is because the small things that brought us joy (in my case toys, comic books, wonderful sunsets and beloved TV shows/music/movies) distracted us from the hell we went through growing up.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In 1986, before my 13th birthday, I heard &amp;ldquo;Love&amp;rdquo; and &amp;ldquo;Electric&amp;rdquo; (the latter had just been released) and it was all over.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Cult will be playing here in Bakersfield, which I consider my adopted hometown, on Dec. 6 at the Golden State Mall (the old Montgomery Ward Plaza) in support of their new album &amp;ldquo;Born Into This&amp;rdquo; where they will bring the rock and more than likely play every song I mentioned.&lt;br /&gt;

&amp;quot;We&#039;re doin&#039; it like a Mexican, adding all kinds of spices,&amp;quot; laughs Garza, 28, describing the musical process he and brothers Jojo, 25 and bass player, and Ringo, 25 and drums, follow to create their hit mix of American Rock n&#039; Roll, traditional Latino roots, and pure Texas fuerza. &lt;br /&gt;

Hailing from San Angelo, Texas, the brothers Garza have been all around the world, spreading their sound to multitudes of fans. &lt;br /&gt;
Instead of becoming another celebrity tragedy, the Garza brotherhood has triumphed again and again.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Taking a break from their present tour, Garza spoke with M&amp;Aacute;S via telephone from Phoenix, Ariz. after a full day of fishing with his brothers to discuss Los Lonely Boys&amp;rsquo; musical beginnings, spiritual strength and why naming their latest CD &amp;ldquo;Sacred&amp;rdquo; was a second choice. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Q: How&#039;s the tour going?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
A: The tour&#039;s going great. The shows have been fantastic. We&#039;re cranking out some of the new tunes off of &amp;ldquo;Sacred.&amp;rdquo; We got our dad out with us and we&#039;re doing some of his songs. It&#039;s just fun, and it feels refreshing to be out again, try to make some money to feed the family and take care of the babies.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Q: Where is San Angelo (your hometown) located?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
A: In between Abelene and Lubbock (Texas).&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Q: Did all three brothers begin playing music at the same time? &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
A: First it was me and my dad (Ringo Sr.). Then once Jojo (bass) was old enough, we started teaching him and we were just playing for awhile. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Ringo (drums) didn&#039;t know what he was going to play, and neither did we. Then one day, he just picked up the drums, I taught him how to play the drums and he just took to it like a duck to water. It was really weird when we started to think about it. Ringo&#039;s name was Ringo (same as Ringo Starr of The Beatles) and he&#039;s playing the drums.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
That&#039;s the way we all did it when our dad taught us music. It was so natural because music&#039;s been in our family for generations, on both sides of our family, our mom&#039;s and our dad&#039;s. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Q: Can you remember the band&#039;s first gig?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
A: I was about 10 years old, Jojo was about 7 and Ringo was like, 5.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
At first, we didn&#039;t have drums. We had guitars and a keyboard, and we would all sing.&lt;br /&gt;
It was at a restaurant. Our dad got us in there to play some songs, and we played as Los Lonely Boys. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Q: Who came up with the band&#039;s name?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A: Our dad had written a song a longtime ago called (and he sings) &amp;ldquo;I&#039;m just a lonely, lonely boy.&amp;rdquo; Ringo was thinking of that song, and put &amp;ldquo;Los&amp;rdquo; in front of it and said Los Lonely Boys. We didn&#039;t think about it much and it just stuck.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Q: Did you perform your own music or cover songs?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
A: We were doing all of our dad&#039;s songs and a bunch of covers. I was really into oldies, like Chuck Berry&#039;s &amp;ldquo;Johnny B. Goode,&amp;rdquo; Richie Valens&#039; &amp;ldquo;La Bamba,&amp;rdquo; &amp;ldquo;The Twist&amp;rdquo; by Chubby Checker. We were into the roots of Rock n&#039; Roll.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Q: How did your father manage to keep your lives in order, taking you on the road? &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/strong&gt;A: We grew up really fast. We saw a lot of things that kids at 6 years old being in your local cantinas, just don&#039;t see all the time. We went from school to playing in the bars, playing to pay the bills. We took responsibility on ourselves as a family real quick. Our dad was really strong about that because we were in it together as a family. He took the whole &amp;ldquo;no sheets over your eyes&amp;rdquo; to keep us from seeing what was really going on in the world. We witnessed it as a young age, and I think it helped make us who we are today. We saw things and knew what not to do just by watching all the grown-ups in the bars act like kids.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Q: How did you get discovered by (country music legend) Willie Nelson? &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
A: We met Willie through our management and his nephew, Fletcher. Willie heard a demo tape of us and took the time to come see us play because he was impressed. &lt;br /&gt;
He came to the show and we were just like everybody else. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In walks Willie Nelson through the door and we were like, &amp;ldquo;(expletive!), I can&#039;t believe it&#039;s Willie! &amp;ldquo;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Q: Did Willie Nelson get up and jam with the band that night?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
A: That night we just performed and gave him the &amp;ldquo;Texican&amp;rdquo; Rock n&#039; Roll. He fit right in. It was like we&#039;d known him forever. Because of the similarities, it felt like being around my dad.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
He was just the guy who really took a chance and gave us the opportunity to play in front of a lot of people and because of who he is and his word of mouth brings a lot of recognition to those he hands the torch to.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Q: Can you describe the feelings you had after having a big hit with &amp;ldquo;Heaven,&amp;rdquo; on the radio and VH-1?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
A: It&#039;s really hard to say because it&#039;s all like a dream. Coming from where we&#039;re from, you dream, but you don&#039;t expect it to come true.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Music is what we do. It&#039;s our way of life. To see the album (&amp;ldquo;Los Lonely Boys&amp;rdquo;) take off the way it did, it&#039;s just amazing for us to witness it. The song, &amp;ldquo;Heaven,&amp;rdquo; came out at a time when the world needed it a lot and brought a lot of comfort. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Q: The band seems very approachable and sincere.&amp;nbsp; Are just enjoying the ride?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
A: We&#039;re no different than anybody else. We&#039;re just doing what we&#039;ve been blessed with. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I think we could&#039;ve been just as good if we were attorneys. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
(He laughs).&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
My brothers and I could&#039;ve been &amp;ldquo;Garza Law&amp;rdquo; or &amp;ldquo;Garza Plumbing,&amp;rdquo; whatever!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Q: Being Latino and having all this fame, do you feel pressure to be a role model?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
A: Me and my brothers don&#039;t feel pressure. We&#039;re not trying to live up to anything, we&#039;re just being ourselves and I think as long as anyone does that, you&#039;re gonna do alright.&lt;br /&gt;
I&#039;m just happy to be Chicano and do what we do because it does set an example and helps us &amp;ldquo;stick out like a sore thumb,&amp;rdquo; so to speak. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Q: The title of your latest CD is &amp;ldquo;Sacred.&amp;rdquo; What role does spirituality play in your lives and songwriting?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
A: It&#039;s in everything, our everyday life. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We believe in the good Lord, and that we&#039;re being guided to stay on this road. &lt;br /&gt;
This album (&amp;ldquo;Sacred&amp;rdquo;) was going to be called &amp;ldquo;Orale,&amp;rdquo; but someone on the (music industry) food chain couldn&#039;t pronounce it and were worried about people not pronouncing it &amp;ldquo;Orale.&amp;rdquo;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We decided to go with something that still represents us, our family, music, and spirituality. It&#039;s &amp;ldquo;Sacred.&amp;rdquo; It&#039;s a deep word that can speak to you in many ways.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Q: What can your Bakersfield audience expect see at your show?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
A: Three brothers getting up on stage having a good time. We&#039;re gonna be there sharing our music with anyone who wants to lend their ears, because we got it to give&amp;hellip;Texican Rock n&#039; Roll!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Q: You&#039;ve had big tours with Santana, your own headlining shows, a Grammy award, concert DVDs and CD&#039;, and now an upcoming documentary &amp;ldquo;Cottonfields &amp;amp; Crossroads&amp;rdquo; in theaters. What&#039;s next for Los Lonely Boys?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
A: My brothers and I would like to just focus on raising our kids and be good role models for our children and the rest of those that look at us.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Q: Any message for your Bakersfield fans?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
A: We can&#039;t wait to get to the streets of Bakersfield! God bless and get ready for some Texican Rock n&#039; Roll!&lt;br /&gt;

Guitarist JR Goldman is no exception. Though he now lives in LaVerne, it was with warm affection that Goldman spoke of Bakersfield and of KORN. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Goldman&amp;rsquo;s time spent in Bakersfield - about 20 years - spurred his own musical career both on and off the stage.&amp;nbsp; As a performer, Goldman started playing clubs at age 14 with The Hit Men. At 17, Goldman opened for Stryper at the Bakersfield Civic Auditorium with his band Forced Entry. He went on to work with many influential producers and play with Tower of Power, Eddie Money, Monty Byrom and more. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Offstage, Goldman has taught guitar for 25 years - at both Front Porch Music and &lt;strong&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.bakotopia.com/users/stockdalemusic&quot;&gt;Stockdale Music&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; while here in Bakersfield - with his most famous students being James &amp;ldquo;Munky&amp;rdquo; Shaffer of KORN and former KORN band member Brian &amp;ldquo;Head&amp;rdquo; Welch. As a friend as well as a teacher, Goldman&amp;rsquo;s musical skills and experience performing proved to be a beacon for Shaffer and Welch. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
According to Goldman, Shaffer and Welch were serious about playing guitar and about doing something with their talent and music.&lt;br /&gt;

&amp;ldquo;They had the drive to become good guitarists and they had the drive to become rock stars,&amp;rdquo; recalled Goldman. &amp;ldquo;They took themselves more seriously and took guitar more seriously. They have earned my respect. I&amp;rsquo;m so proud of both those guys - they&amp;rsquo;re good guitarists and great people, too.&amp;rdquo;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Goldman&amp;rsquo;s method of teaching is a concentrated version that requires student dedication through plenty of practice time and regular lessions. If you&amp;rsquo;ve got the guts, he&amp;rsquo;s got the skills to share. Goldman shared his wisdom and musical ability with Shaffer and Welch for about 6 months to 1 year, but their relationship has been long lasting and one of mutual respect. KORN members have frequently mentioned Goldman as a strong influence and a teacher during interviews and even offered a public thank you on a CD.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;

&amp;ldquo;When I took lessons from you it really gave me hope &amp;hellip; but I just liked to come and watch you jam,&amp;rdquo; said Shaffer. &amp;ldquo;He showed me and Head a lot of different stuff that helped us open doors that we didn&#039;t know were possible.&amp;rdquo;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Taking a four-year break from big-name performers and simplifying his life has allowed Goldman to enjoy low-key performances with friends and teaching guitar. However, recently an offer to play with former &amp;ldquo;American Idol&amp;rdquo; contestant Angela Peel has piqued his interest in getting back in the game. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Additionally Goldman is enthusiastically creating a series of online guitar lessons he will post at his Web site that can be accessed at any time - and for free. In the future Goldman hopes to develop an online conservatory with other musicians providing lessons for various instruments. Goldman has talked to KORN vocalist Jonathan Davis about his project and received Davis&amp;rsquo; full support. Davis will contribute a blog to the site and there will be a link from the band&amp;rsquo;s Web site to Goldman&#039;s free lessons so that KORN fans can access the same teacher who taught Welch and Schaffer.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;ldquo;When I talked to Jon about it he said, &amp;lsquo;You&amp;rsquo;re gonna have kids all over the world to teach,&amp;rsquo;&amp;rdquo; said Goldman - who said Davis is the softest and kindest of spirits and is &amp;ldquo;blown away&amp;rdquo; by his outlook on life and how humble he is.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
While his focus and influence may be directed elsewhere, for Goldman Bakersfield will always be familiar and feel like home because &amp;ldquo;people I love live there.&amp;rdquo; Just as KORN manages to make it back to Bakersfield, so will Goldman.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
As hard as it may be to leave Bakersfield, you can always take The B with you when you go - especially when you&amp;rsquo;re listening to KORN on the way out of town.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/div&gt;

In year&#039;s past, the event had been held at the KC Fairgrounds, but due to unpredictable weather, cleanliness concerns, and &amp;quot;too many homie discounts,&amp;quot; the only way to make sure the event was done professionally and safely was to move it downtown in a more controlled environment..&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Tattooing is a big part of downtown Bakersfiel culture. If you&#039;re thinking about getting a tattoo, make sometime to visit the many great tattoo parlors all over Bakersfield. The artists there will make sure to guide you to the right ink.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
An estimated 3,000 attended over the weekend, listened to some great music, paid tribute to those lost too soon, competed for the show&#039;s best tattoo, and partied outta control!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Onhand to MC the tattoo contest was President of Video Action Sports, Tom Allen of Pismo Beach, Ca.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Winning Saturday&#039;s &amp;quot;Overall Best Tattoo,&amp;quot; was Bakersfield artist, Jimmy Bertram,&amp;nbsp; whose winning piece was a large stomach tattoo with roses and snakes.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This was my third experience at the annual Bakersfield Tattoo Expo, and I always have a great time. It always ends up being an old school reunion, and a cool way to catch up with old friends, and check out the great work.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;em&gt;Mas&lt;/em&gt; Magazine photographer, Chanclas, came along to help cover the event! She was pleasantly surprised by the quality of work and looks forward to her first tat!&lt;br /&gt;

The Bakersfield Rollergirls were in attendance, as well as other representatives from Bako&#039;s unique social scene...Word!&lt;br /&gt;
