I’m thankful for our Constitution. I am thankful for the rights we had been given and the opportunity we have in the United States to make as much money as we want to, worship whom we want to, own property where we want to, work where we want to, go to school, learn, read, have a family, or not have a family, drive a car, go to the Dr, love who you want, live with who you want, vote for who you want as the president. I am very thankful for what I have, what I can do, and that I have the ability and opportunity to succeed or fail on my own.

I really enjoyed putting together "The Last Band." Took a lot of shit over it, but also got some kudos too. Bakersfield.com wrote an article about it. That was nice. It's good that it has some shelf life. It's a slice of history and would be nothing without the great music of the Outlaws in it. I love the sequence where they sign guitars at Trouts. Thanks for the mention, Matt! And I hope the Iron Outlaws have a great show on Saturday. I'm going to try to make that after watching my kid's band, Dirty Spanglish at the Marketplace at 1 p.m. It's going to be a Bako music scene kind of a day!

CONTEST IS OVER! THE B-52s at THE FOX ON NOV. 15!

The 80's was when I came alive!!

In 1981 I escaped an abusive home where there was no music. I remember crying when I heard songs like "I Made It Through The Rain" and "Celebration". I learned how to dance! And I danced for JOY! I found Prince, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Madonna, Thomas Dolby, Cyndi Lauper and of course the B-52's. Who doesn't remember dancing to Love Shack? Remember Todd's? I was there every weekend. I wasn't a barfly, I didn't even drink. I was there to DANCE!! That was in the days where girls couldn't dance with girls (or you might be thought to be gay) and I remember the DJ (remember John Fredericks of Oildale?) telling my friend and I over the PA "couples only on the dance floor" We refused and danced anyway.

The 80's is still the best time for fun music, why else would it keep making a comeback? Think of all those bands that started in the 80's that are still popular today?

I LOVED all the concerts I saw. Prince, Lionel Richie, Miami Sound Machine, Thompson Twins, Bangles, Expose, Cyndi Lauper, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, Little River Band, Lakeside, Evelyn Champagne King, the list goes on and on. We won't mention Ted Nugent's Cat Scratch Fever tour (what's that smell?)

Unfortunately I never got to see the B-52's. I don't think they came to Bako and at that time I couldn't afford to travel out of town for shows.

Ah well, maybe this time, if I can find someone to go with me.

The 80s. That was U2's decade of popularity. I remember seeing them in 1985 at the LA Sports Arena and then again at the LA Coliseum in 1987. A great decade for music. B-52s was sort of a party band. The girls who dressed at school like the gals in the band were always hot and moddish. Remember the mods? I first saw the B-52s in the 1990s in Ohio at Blossom. Great show...

Aw I remember the 80's...skating in my driveway to the Pop Muzik 45. Blue tennis shoe skates. Oh wait, that was the 70's. Yeah I don't remember the 80's very well. Cheech and Chong movies and the Star Channel. I was grounded for most of the decade, I think. Listening to hair bands and Devo on my Fisher component stereo, my walls plastered with pictures from Hit Parader. Strawberry Hill and Shaeffer beer you could buy without an ID at the Shabaa market in East Bakersfield. Rock Lobster...Roam...I want to see the B-52's. I missed them play at the Fox back then. I'm sure I was grounded for sneaking out to see Ted Nugent or something.

I am so happy this election is FINALLY(!) over. It seemed to just bring out the worst in some people. The ripping apart of Sarah Palin was absolutely disgusting. The proposition 8 craziness was a complete embarrassment to this community. Since it is over, I must say that I hope Mr. Obama chooses smart people to guide him through the years to come. This country needs a strong leader to get the economy back on track and to bring our troops home. The only way this can happen is if we all rally behind this new administration whether you voted for him or not. We need to show the world that we are strong and a power to be reckoned with.

I think if a lot of people would have looked up the name Ezra Taft Benson and listened to some of his speaches from the national archives in Washington, DC they might have listened a little more closely to the candidates before jumping on the bandwagon for one candidate over the next. (Ezra Taft Benson video is available on You-Tube).

I'm not satisfied with the results from last night, but I'm not goning to lose any sleep over it either. My favorite candidate was Mitt Romney, unfortunately he was scrubbed early from the election process.

I fear that the concept of Arbitration is going to become a more common pratice under the Obama Presidency, and I was never really conveniced Obama had a plan for any thing he promised he was going to do for the people. Only time will tell what kind of President he will be.

I hope this is a good lesson to all Americans how important it is to vote each and every time you get a chance. America has finally reached the 50% voter turn out level, almost equal to the levels for voter turn out in countries we are trying to teach our democratic process to. Be proud America, we still had two candidates to choose from.

Well, I could totally state my case, but first I'll go with DITTO on BakersfieldRPG's comment!

Remember when MTV actually played music videos? I miss that! I loved all the crazy out there videos from the 80's and a bit into the 90's ... most of the music was fun, not horribly serious - Think Funky Cold Medina, Don't Worry Be Happy, You Can Call Me Al, Baby Got Back, Oingo Boingo (and the midget popping up in so many videos), Max Headroom, of course the B52's, how many times have you screamed "TIN ROOF - RUSTED!" at the top of your lungs dancing around the living room ... erm ... maybe I just told you too much about what I do home alone.

These tickets would be an awesome birthday gift, wink wink ;) Hah! :)

My son's car was stolen and stripped of everything... then what was left was torched- total damage. He lost his whole cd collection and a few personal belongings. And at least the bank was quick in letting you know. Take care and I will pray things turn out well for you.

I miss the 80's. Something about that cheesy music and the beginning(and end)of the synth style that came with it. The lyrics were so simple even though most of them had double meanings(every breath you take is prime example).Van Halen was the bomb though back then. And I can't forget the best of them all...the music videos!! Slegdehammer all the way yo!

Everyone danced in the 80's. It did not matter if you had rhythm you could still manage the side to side thing. I am always up for some retro 80's dancing!

I miss the B52's!! Their music is so original and fun! Two best family memories are: my brother in law dancing to Rock Lobster at my sister's wedding before his neck injury and the other is our whole family dancing to Love Shack at a dance off at Seaworld.
I would love to see them perform live here in Bakersfield. Can't think of anything I'd rather do on Nov. 15th!!

Only one word describes the 80's, FUN! Fun and funky fashions for starters! I was always loaded up with jelly bracelets, fishnet tops, tight skirts, or jeans made tighter by safety pins going from the ankle, up the leg, wild and crazy hair, big flyaway hair! Wild designs in every color of the rainbow! Now that was fashion with attitude! The music was definitely the best part for me. I loved the female pop stars, like Madonna, Bangles,Stacy Q,Banarama, etc. But my true passion was hair bands! Poison, Cinderella, Dokken, Motley Crue, Skid Row, Ratt, Faster Pussycat, Kix, Wasp, Van Halen, Twisted Sister, Def Leppard, Dio, Quiet Riot, Aerosmith, Anthrax, AC/DC, just to name a few. My dad wouldn't let me go to the concerts since I was just a young teen, but every Friday night I would sit in front of the tv and rock out with my headphones blaring to Headbangers Ball!
I had so many crushes on those hair band guys! WOOT! I remember I was watching Headbangers Ball intently when I heard the most awesome song come on. It was GNR world premier of "Welcome to the Jungle". I was in metal heaven! Guns N Roses became the band to end all bands for me! I still love them! The local fair was a blast too because they played metal on all the rides! It is nothing like it used to be, it's so sad. :( When I turned 15, I was able to go out more so Headbangers Ball fell by the wayside. Hanging out at the mall scoping out guys with my friends, Rollertown on the weekend nights, the White Lane miniature golfcourse with my rocker friends for partying, ditching South to go to Hart Park with my senior friends (I was just a freshman)! It was such a total blast! I've never stopped loving the music and fashions of the 80's. Those years were the best time of my life! I really wish the 80's would make a comeback. We need more FUN times! We need more FUN music! FUN fashions!

That was me in a nutshell! I miss the me that I was and I definitely miss the 80's! I love you, 80's!!!!!! :)

Thanks for listening,

AAaahhh The 80's - What's not to miss?! Fashion: hmmmm...Day Glo, nope, Leg Warmers, nope, Pegged Levis shrink to fit 501's, nah, layered polos, yeah, Vans never went out of style (thank god!) Hair: Spiral perms, no way, Spikey on top, long in back, no no no, Not the Mullet! Lots of big hair & hair spray! Now, after reviewing Style & Hair, we must conclude that "The Music" has to be the best thing that came out of the 80's. Devo, Adam Ant, Billy Idol, Flock of Seagulls, B52's, Eurythmics, Duran Duran, Madness, Tears for Fears, UB40, However, we all could have lived without Rick Springfield, thank you. YES it was most definitely the music! Who doesn't have a Pure 80's collection downloaded on their Ipod?! It's a must... do it now!!!

New wave, death rock, punk, cholas, Depeche Mode, the Cure, the Damned, the coolest freaks of all time have been from the 80s. Glad so many of these groups are still around including the B52's! HOOK ME UP!

Graduated in 1987 ~ 'spose that makes me OLD when you think that kids born that year are now old enough to drink (legally, that is).

What do I miss about the 80’s & 90’s music scene. I miss the larger than life musicians from the 80's and early 90's. People like the B-52s, Adam Ant, Talking Heads, Thomas Dolby, and Men without Hats to name a few. They were almost like cartoons in their absurdity. As well their music was upbeat and fun to listen to not filled with violence, hate, and swearing. To this day I love to bop along to some good old B-52s and just forget about the economy , the cost of living, and bills and just think of my own Private Idaho!
I also miss the local music scene of the 90’s I remember going downtown back then and feeling somewhat safer than in the past few years. I could hit Jerry’s for a show, or head around the corner to Chaos Coffee for another, and yet walk a bit east and hit Mars for a third. If nothing was going on then the Nile always had a cheap flick I could watch until something did happen. Back then we had Mento of course still a Bako tradition, but also bands like Crawdaddy, the Examples, and Fresno’s ska band Checkmate as well as visiting acts such as MU330. Those were the days when shows were cheap, the music was fun, and everything was in walking distance.

B52s made the scene while I was in Grad School. Took the excesses of the 80s to a campy conclusion. By being a comment on the 80s rather than an ignorant part of it, they are still relevant and fun today. I hope I win the tickets.

Oh darn! I hope I am not too late! I was about 4 years old, no siblings yet, a dreadfully shy child and was taken to a "haunted house". Not a commercial one, but at someone's house. I had pieces of candy clenched in my little fists. They blindfolded me and started sticking my fists in bowls of stuff. Slimy grapes were supposed to be eyeballs. It was a hideous and frightening experience. Not funny, but that is my most vivid memory of a past Halloween.

There was this time when I went to Santa Maria to visit a friend of mine for halloween. He called some of his other friends over and we had this huge halloween bash going on at his apartment. After that night, for about three days my friend's girlfriend kept complaining about an odor coming somewhere from the house. She had looked everywhere. Still nothing.
It wasn't until it was time to throw the pumpkin away when she discovered someone had puked in it! She said there were these chunks that looked like pineapple and noodles like someone had eatin' chinese food before they came over.
I'd like to see fishbone at jerry's pizza 11/1.

My parents worshiped at the altar of hedonism. They openly celebrated freedom of carnal knowledge. It didn’t do me much good. Either you’re cut out for an imposed way of life or your not. Obviously you were not cut out to be a disciple of your parents chosen religion. I was not cut out to live a hedonistic style of life and like you I moved on with my life in a manner more cohesive to my own mind set. Good for you Aaron for standing up to the fear of others and for facing down your own fear to be your own person amidst personal times of great trials and tribulations. I think your music is tops and hope you use your last breath in this world to sing something beautiful………. Best wishes my friend.

For Senses Fail tix, heres my story - so when I was 16 years old me and some friends came up with the idea to be a group of nerd for Halloween. Im talking full out nerdiness, like when Tori Spelling played Violet, Screeches girlfriend on Saved By the Bell! Well a coulple of us decided to get ready at my friend Maegan's house who lived just over a bridge crossing a freeway. Ok so we're all ready to go meet up at another friends house when I come up with the smartest accessory ever, so i thought... We made "kick me" signs and stuck them to our backs. So here we are a couple 16 years old dressed like nerd walking on the bridge over the freeway when we hear a bunch of little kids laughing and reading the signs. We kinda laughed at the fact they thought it was funny, well we should have guessed....these little kids started running after us to try and kick us! We were being chased by eight year olds! We literally had to run all the way to our friends house to get away from them! Well, after that incident, we decided NOT to wear the signs for the rest of the night.

Yeah. There's so many holes in there philosophy. Then when the prophecies didn't come true they tried to turn around and say it was rumours in the congregation even though it was quoted in issues of the watchtower. But you could never read or research anything to do with this stuff because you would be deemed an apostate or asked why your devoting so much negative energy to try and bring something down. When me and my dad would get into deep conversations he would say, even if this isn't the right religion, at least we won't die of aids, or cheat on our taxes or be like the "world." It was something his father told to him and an easy out. My father was a great man, but If he ever turned away from the Jehovah Witness religion he would lose his kids and wife and all that he knows or has experienced in life. My parents are baby souls who are just following in the footsteps of the only things they know, cause they are too scared to research anything else cause of the fate of the great day of "Armageddon", when all unfaithful will be destroyed, supposedly.

I've been reading up on JW's, and while I do believe in religious tolerance - shunning your kids for not following a 'religion', and you become 'cast out' using terms like "disfellowshipped", that is just lame. If you say you're a Christian, you should be unconditionally loving - as Jesus taught. And besides, what's up with the world ending about gazillion times already? It's like being bound by fear, and changing the date...I'm confused.

There are some Jehovahs Wittness who are very kind and caring and good friends (my dads friend is one) but there are some that are backstabing, concieded holyer than you ones. I think Aaron and i have had some similar experianced with JW's over the years. They can be very opressive and judemental. I think that parents force their kids to get babtized to scare them away from doing anything "BAD" at a young age & i think this happened to him. but his spirit and independance took care of that. i think people are who they are and you cant force YOUR beliefs on others. But there is the guilt factor that comes with being a Jehovahs Wittness's Kid. When you are disfellowshipped and your parents wont have a decent conversation with you and cry saying you are not going to be in the "book of life", you have a overbaring feeling of Guilt. thats hard to get over. I hope things are fine aaron. Just remember that you are you, you have no reason to feel guilty for wanting to make yourself happy doing the things you are good at and not being an Elder or pioneer, or the microphone holder (LOL) I'm proud of you standing up for youself. Many cant. Sing it.

I saw you singing Aaron at the Art show Saturday:) The rumor is that your VERY GOOD. I told my Friend that is that Aaron guy.,he is a VERY GOOD WRITER:) You really should write a book. It is like looking through your eyes when you write.

As for the Whole Religion thing. I don't hate on any one religion. I think ALL have their Radicals.
I was raised Roman Catholic. The Radicals think we should hate on Gays. Its no secret my brother is gay. I love him no matter what. He loves me even if I am straight:) None of my family shuns him or disowns him. If your going to let someone else tell you what you shouldn't do or should do in your life,,you really need to rethink that way of thinking. That's just my thought on that.
As for the suicide issue. I remember wanting to blame someone,,ANYONE,,ANYTHING on Angela's Suicide. But it all came back to her Depression. I have since talked to people who have lost close friends and family members from suicide. And it all came back to the same issue. The person was depressed for whatever reason and have a sorta tunnel Vision. The only thought they see is suicide to get out of their sadness,,their pain. I am really sorry you lost your cousin. I still have such sadness over losing Her too.
Back to MEXICO:)

It was a few years back and me and my friends where all dressed up as ninjas. With a T-shirt converted into a super cool ninja mask...and we where trick or treating. A little old, but free candy, who can pass that up. Us being dressed in all black and it was a moonless night, on a dark street on top of that, where trying to see if we could sneak up on one another. One of my friends, Dustin who had disapeared for a few min came running at me at full speed attempting to spear me, ran head first into an extremely low, and thick tree branch, causing him to do a complete backflip, and land on his face on the sidewalk. Seeing that he was still alive we all shared a nice laugh and continued on with the candy gathering. Although he has a pretty nice headache afterwards. And a nice goose egg on his forehead to accompany it. I guess its true. Its funny until someone gets hurt, then its hilarious.

well before last years Halloween,I had gathered the nickname "hyphy" or "hyphykiiid",so for Halloween I saw fit to dress up as a hip hop hyphy dancer.
me and some friends went to golden valley high school to visit a my friend named lana who they wanted to meet.
we all went, hung out,and lana had made cupcakes and I had eaten more than my fair share, and had gone on a sugar high, all hyper,as I had a 44oz coke earlier.
I ran around the school hyper and met one of her friends named Sarah.me being all hyped up I made a big deal, dancing and shouting I had met Sarah massacre,(her myspace screen name) and even as we drove away,Sarah insisted she can hear me down the road shouting and laughing that "I met Sarah massacre" when we brought it up later on onn the phone.
the entire ride home was me repeating the entire "I met Sarah massacre" and eating all the left over cupcakes, getting me more hyper and dancing along to the iPod until we got back home into arvin.
We got to the school parking lot,and whenever someone drove up bumping music,I'd start dancing wildly "getting hyphy" and shouting I met Sarah over and over.
later on that night I still hadn't calmed down and had taken my little brother trick or treating, and started eating the candy and listening to my iPod dancing and repeating,,hereby embarassing him and people thinking I'm either drunk or just plain crazy.
as we were heading home,I had shouted that phrase again, and arvin being a small town,I specifically remember a girl dressed with as a nun, walking with a power ranger say: " yeah hyphy,we all heard about ur little adventure,u need to lay off the cupcakes." I just lost it and started laughing more than ever, and this lasted about 3 days being how much more sugar I had with all the candy, and being how much the situation was blown out of proportion and turned hilarious.
this further cemented my "hyphy" nickname,as everyone knows me by this, but I met some great people that day,and went for a great Halloween.
Which also taught me to lay off the sugar and upbeat hip hop music at the same time.:)

Jehova is the spanish spelling. My bad. I actually noticed I spelled it wrong when I did, but I'd also spelled other words wrong and didn't feel like going back to edit. You're actually VERY RIGHT Josey. The elders DO encourage for families to shun their family members who have chosen not to follow the strict bible guidelines. But they are not forced to. That, again, is a personal choice. Aaron, you should write a book. The stories you've shared on bakotopia regarding your homeless days are always very compelling and your writing is beautiful. Viva Mexico! (hahaha)

That’s your personal opinion to think they are no more or less evil then Catholics. But from the sounds of it I don’t think you’re very familiar with the religion as much as I am. I get that just from you misspelling Jehovah (it’s with an H). Your parents sound like mine, but trust me the majority of them are not like that, we both got lucky. Elders (the head JWs) will tell you to stop talking to your children if they chose a different path. That is a fact. It’s up to the parents of course to decide whether or not to listen.

I guess if it weren’t for JW’s Aaron wouldn’t have such a great story to tell though, so there’s always an upside to things.

Catholic priests also are infamous for their child molestation and cover ups, Josey. Obviously I don't agree with Jehova's witness beliefs since I chose not to be one. I'm just saying the Jehova's Witness religion is no less evil than the Catholic religion. Also, I was "outsed" or "shunned" or whatever you call it by the JW's but I wasn't disowned by my family. Like I said before, that is a PERSONAL decision that the family can make at the time. My family chose to love me and hold me closer so I wouldn't stray even further from the life they thought I should live. When I didn't, they still chose to keep in touch with me and not disown me. Annie, I think I know what's missing from the story (hehehe) but I think it's perfect just the way it is. For now.

I was also raised as Jehovah's Witness. My parents are still Jehovah's Witnesses they are wonderful people and the best parents I could have ever asked for. I know stories and facts about witnesses though that in my book make them evil. Covering up child molestation is just one of them. Several of them disowning their own children at times when kids need them the most. I can't think of any other religion that does that. JW's are responsible for ruining lives. My cousin committed suicide after being disfellowshiped, I blame JW's for his death. He was also molested by an elder when he was younger. It's a cult and I pray one of these days my parents will see that.

I can go on for days and days about this but I dont want to go off topic too much.

Jehova Witnesses are no more evil than Catholics or Christians. Why are they evil for adhering strictly to the Ten Commandments? It's like saying Christians who believe being gay is immoral are evil. Howeer, nowhere in their book of Jehova's Witness rules or whatever does it say to kick out your child no matter what age he is. That was a decision Aaron's parents made on their own. They will "outsed you or shunn you so you have time to think about the error of your ways but they won't KICK YOU OUT OF YOUR HOME. I was also a JW as a teen and was "shunned" not "outsed" because of mistakes I made but my parents just loved me more to try and get me to see the error in my ways and "repent." People do get "shunned" but it's no more different than when a non JW parent is giving their child tough love because of drugs, or drinking, or whatever other problems their children might have. Other than that, I love your stories, Aaron. You have led a very interesting life.

One vertical brass pole away from being a tittie bar. I went for lunch once just to see what all the hype was about. What shames me the most is NOT that I admit to going, but that there were families there with young children. Absolutely disgusting.
As for the violence... What do you expect when you mix guys who have more testosterone than brains, booze and whores? The only logical conclusion is violence. It should come as no suprise that this dump will close within a year. Thank gawd.

I would sit in a seat against the wall, pull out my boob and nurse her throughout the entire movie.
Right on! I went on Saturday and had my bubble burst. Mostly on the calibar of "help" I don't wan't to get too specific because I don't want to offend...but I just wondered if they actually interviewed their waitresses face to face... :( I appreciate a Good Hooters now and again, but this was pathetic in comparison. I guess I have great taste in woman, but my buddy regretfully agreed with me, So I know I wasn't the only one thinking it. The food sucked too (Worse than Hooters); and sadly they didn't deliver in other areas to make up for it. Such a disapointment...

I found out there was a stabbing on Saturday night. It's unfortunate that when someone tries to open a place well-known in bigger cities, a group of blockheads ruin it for the public who may be into a place like The Kilt. I hear a lot of stories about violence happening in Rosedale clubs. Why?
