Chicana Book Club to Discuss "Lords, Part One."

I'm more than honored to have my book selected by the Chicana Book Club. It's a great time for me to get involved in the club, and an especially tearful moment to feel embraced by my own culture. Yes, my eyes got all watery, and yes I still recognize that my own culture might not be entertained by the book. But it was selected and that makes me proud beyond belief! My own Chicano father used to think writing was for sissies. "You need to work hard and learn to drive a truck!" But I think that came more from his own troubled heart of not having finished college. He's not around, so I can't ask. But I am thankful. He was creative, and my Germanic mother was supportive and a believer in me. She's not around either, but she would have been proud too. What can I say? This little book club in Bakersfield reading my book is a major achievement in my life and I look forward to great discussion, good food, and for Sal to talk about revolutionary heroes... this is a defining moment.

Twinkie's prayer of the day: Oh Dear God, please don't ever let me get drunk enough to think it's ok to take my shirt or pants off in public. Please God, I beg of you. And if I ever do.... please don't let Matt be whever I may be. I'll do anything. I'll even give up Coors Light. Ok, so I don't drink Coors Light. No need to get all caught up in technicalities, is there? I beg you! Please.

Chicana Book Club to Discuss "Lords, Part One."

Though last meeting was held at my pad I must say it was my first book club attendance. Twinkie did spring it on me so I was found unprepared with no idea as to what the title of the book was. However, being part of such an in-depth discussion with people passionately commenting on what they felt and what went through their minds as they read which part...was truly inspiring and ambitiously driven. I felt as if I had read the book and my understanding of it became clearer with each comment. I am looking forward to next month and to make sure I am not found unprepared I have purchased my book of Lords and am reading using every spare moment I have, I even carry it my purse next to my never leave behind lipgloss and have to have with me compact. Thank goodness for big purses, (I guess I am getting older since someone once told me, the older you get the bigger purse you carry) Luckily I am old enough to where I can just carry "everything" with me.

I'll take the opportunity here to thank my sister for allowing me to host the book club at her house. I sort of just volunteered it and then later called her and said, "Oh, BTW.. I need your house on so-and-so day. I volunteered you to host my book club meeting." And in that way, sort of "forced her" to be part of the club. hahaha I'm very fortunate for the sisters I have! They truly ROCK! She even had some ambience music going for us in the background. I want a copy of that CD, BTW! hint hint! Sal, it was fun having you at the meeting. I'm glad you enjoyed yourself! I also wanted to thank Jose for the information he provided us about the meaning of names, and how the original history of Quetzalcoatl has been tweeked by those who rewrote history to serve themselves. It was very insightful. I am looking forward to the next meeting.

There were some crazy art pieces there and congrats to all that were displayed. Hectic Films provided an insane look into the depravity that we live in. OUTSTANDING!! Thanks to Matt for the invite and had a great time. NOW, THE BIG QUESTION....WHEN DOES THE RESTAURANT OPEN?????

Hey Bako, I just listened to Podcast #28 with Three Chord Whore. I have two points to make. One, Matt is amazing. He is, shoot from the hip, cool about interviews. The banter is cool, the Q&A seamless. Second, Three Chord Whore is amazing. I would be following them as a Whorehead, or Chordhead, or something, if my life hadn't changed so drastically in the last 5 years. I've known Chantell{sic} since that time I played with Mike P and Roger. She used to play drums for Naked Lady Mud Flap. All I know is that I'm 100% on board, more girls and women and mothers should be expressing themselves through music. I've been in Bako for a while and just now it seems there are good places to play and get shows and a crowd ready for it. Let's take this opportunity and run. I'm ready are you?
Loved Loved eposide 34. Henry with the LOs Lonley boys, how real is he. His love for family was out of this world. He was so honest and real about his feelings, it made me remember that these guys are regular people too. Not only are they stars with a rich sound, but real down to earth guys with a honest love for what they are doing! I loved the fact that they feed the great force of human nature and love of ALL people through their music. Lots of really interesting and inspiring stuff in this eposide. Keep up the fantastic work!!!!!!

Though I have to admit I'm a bit disappointed that Noveltown's industrial music and film entry, and Hectic's movie Skip won't be there for this Saturday. That was my main reason for wanting to go. But I understand noveltown is busy with the Yosemite Writer's Conference this weekend. They are forgiven, I suppose! LOL And Skip will be on hecticfilms.com website on Halloween so it's all good!

It's cool that they got the call directly from Ernie Ball and took the Bakersfield scene on the road in a big way. Here's to Bakersfield artists getting recognized------Cheers!
I’m diggin’ The Filthies and Another Year podcast. It's been so long since I've heard some local music. Bakotopia, you're doing a great job of keeping the scene alive. Thank you. I can't wait to see if we can all give it a little more CPR and get some blood flowing in Bako's veins! There is so much potential that needs to be united the bring this “scene” together, and I definitely think it’s possible. This website is a great start. P.S. I too didn't even realize that Los Lonely Boys were coming to town! What the heck!! Either we need some better advertising around here, or I’m just living under a rock, but thanks to Bakotopia I'm now in the know! Peace--

Theatretopia

Whoa, whoa, whoa... I am definitely not using the History of Rock and Roll or the Spotlight as an example of shortcomings in the theatre community. This is about living up to our full buzz potential, remember? The truth of it is, I consider the show a friend and a good example of positive things in the theatre community. This is why I chose it to point out examples of how we can create more buzz...and recall I am primarily addressing the theatreaddict movement and asking for more involvement in what I am trying to do (using podcasts and blogs to get the word out). Yes, there is a tendency in theatre in general to remain insular, and yes that exists somewhat in Bakersfield...but you're right, the Spotlight and HR&R are examples of those bad habits being thrown to the wind. I am fully aware of how hard the cast the cast has worked to sell the show and it has worked! There is a buzz in Bakersfield about it. I simply used them as an example to point out a few easy things that we can do to create more media buzz. That's all... I'm trying to grow a medium that will always be there for theatre to use. So when the TV stations don't have room to put you on, or when a show just doesn't have that kind of appeal we will always have our own means, our own loudspeaker to shout to the moon about the projects we're working on. I want theatreaddict.com to exist 10 years from now, and by then I may have kids and will have passed it along to someone else to run. Anyway...I hope my real points (all positive and loving) weren't overshadowed by an assumed criticism. As I said, I simply want to begin a dialogue about using these new mediums to buzz about theatre. The theatre community has really opened up in the last few years, there is sharing and a mutual love going on that is beautiful. The time is ripe to explode the whole theatre scene into mainstream Bakersfield and I want to start working on that now...with you. And while I am readdressing this whole subject... One reason I wanted to bring this up now is because I see the upcoming "bakotopia" theatre feature as a real opportunity to expand the notoriety of local theatre, and I want you (the theatre community) to take advantage of it with me. Bakotopia is going to be reaching out to us, promoting us, and basically inviting us to start using their site. Bakersfield.com and bakotopia.com have free blogs and are starting communities that are a bit like a mix of myspace and craigslist. The thing is...how cool would it be to have someone browsing the Bakersfield Californian's website and find your blog about your show, and then come to see it? Or perhaps a musician looking at bands on Bakotopia might take a step into local drama. These are opportunities that are coming our way, and I want to be sure that we are all primed and ready to take advantage. That's all! Hugs and kisses to the cast of History of Rock & Roll. You know I love ya. I wouldn't never do ya like that, baby.

I was actually thinking... if the marketplace hosted more family friendly events the tough kids would find a new place to hang out. But if they are not going to do that, then they need to hire security that looks like security, not cute little boys who look like they are out past their bedtime!

Thats your first problem, you were there on a Thursday night, not a Friday. The tough kids aren't allowed to go out on Thursdays. And the Security Guards are douchebags.

I was at the marketplace last night with my 16 year old son and his 15 year old cousin. And I have to say, it looked really family friendly. This security guard came up to us and smiled and asked how we were doing and I thought that was sweet. I also thought it was cool that they hire twelve year olds for security guards. Ok, so maybe he wasn't twelve but he sure did look it. LOL

That was beautiful Cesario. Thank you so much for that. You have spoken out loud words we often think but maybe never say out loud. David was a great person and he will be missed. I have often told my husband that when I die want a Mariachi to play at my funeral. I want everyone to be happy for me and I want to be cremated as well! He used to be against it until I convinced him it was MY celebration of a new life, not his and if he didn't follow them I'd haunt him. hahaha

Parenting has to start early on and if not, you'll be lucky to get something going later. You cant pop in with rules and shite 10 years later and expect it to take. At least not in a traditional manner. I know from personal experience, I'm just lucky to be intelligent enough to know whats a good path and a bad path.

I was there and I'll be there next time to see the SikWorld circus. though I am not a fan of the type of music that was there that night, I must say, Stitch and Divided By Zero were really good and I recommend everyone check them out.
