Intensity in One City: Chiodos review from 4/7/08

It was a really good show! Being the old fart that I am...was more into MxPx and I love them! hahaha

I took my 14 year old daughter with me and she enjoyed Chiodos so that was fun. I had to sit with her on the stands no moshpits for her! Overall it was good!

Well...lets see. two random road trips and way too much rock band, yes mischief ensued.

road trip 1 was out to SB, love that city and beach. one recommendation, dont wear the new V-neck on a long sunny day. im finally over the sun burn, yes the peeling has stopped!! just chilled and hung out with friends that it had been too long since last visit. then road trip down to the lovely Venice Beach. Man...always trouble there, we harassed the street performers and set up our own donation station where we played guitar, well actually i just watched and encouraged donations as i have no musical talent out side RockBand.

Which leads to the many many many (you get the idea) late nights playing rock band. Nothing beats the RockBand dress up like your band parties. Imagine the 80s rockstar that just crossed over from country. Chaps, vests, wigs, staches, and a vinyl aquaman costume?? dont ask questions, just imagine, yes it glorious!!

Crazy....what is crazy? my crazy may not be your crazy..ok, here it goes. When I was 21 I lied to my mom and said i was going to Laguna for a week but instead i took my rent money (400.00) and an extra 300.00 and flew to Hawaii to meet some guy i had never met. he was in the navy and we met over the phone through my friend (that i later married). He told me he had gotten us a hotel room and for me to go and check in, well, i get there and there is a room in my name, but i needed to pay for it. I had alread spent 400 on my flight(round trip) so that left me with like 250.00. i had to take a taxi and oh yeah, eat. The room for the week was 300. So i paid for 4 days. that left me with nothing. So i go to the room get ready and the guy calls and says he's sorry that he hadn't made it down yet to pay for the room, but he would give me the money back. he was on his way. I'm so nervous but so excited to see him. When he finally shows up I ain't to happy, at ALL! He is a jerk, a slob and lets face it he was ugly!! I let him in anyway and it just wasn't going to happen. he knew, i knew, it was just a matter of me saying dude, leave. after a few hours of just being completely grossed out I finally said enough. I kicked him out and then tried to figure out what i was going to do. Because we all know he didn't give me any money. i wasn't calling my mom, my friend was in bakersfield on leave and i knew no one in Hawaii. My room came with a free continental breakfast so i had food and drink covered. I would go down a few times a morning and just load up on juice, milk, cofffee, donuts and cereal.
I spent my days at the beach and sight seeing, all free and all by myself. it was kinda lonley, but yet it was fun. I had cut my room stay down by a day and my flight left the next day. So instead of using my brain and seeing if i could fly back a day early, i slept on the beach. your not allowed to sleep on the beach but i just kept moving, a few hrs here a few hrs there, and before i knew it it was time for me to walk to the airport. Now as fate would have it I had ditched my suitcase in the restroom at the beach and went to go get it and a couple was there taking some last min pic. they asked if i could take some pic of them on the beach so i did. i got my nerve up and asked if they were going to the airport, they said yes and i asked for a ride. i told them my whole story and they said yes. Thank you jesus. So I make my flight, make it home thinking im scott free and remembered i spent my rent money. so after all the bs i still had to tell my mom what i did and beg her for the rent money.

This may not seem crazy to you, but I am a single mother and I decided to take my daughters to a camping spot where my family used to camp when I was a kid. It's about 1 1/2 hours north in the mountains, so we made sandwiches, packed some sodas, and took the drive up the mountain. It was beautiful. We didn't actually make it to the camp site because the dirt road was closed mid way up. There was snow in the mountains. :( Now the craziest part about it was, we had no phone service, three girls on a road trip, no men. We would've been screwed had anything bad happened to the car. I'll think twice before I do that again.

They started seperating the cars and reattaching them to other cars ours was all by itself and ended up attched to 5 other cars and 6 engines, it stop several times we ended up in Salt Lake after 3 days, we stayed in Salt lake for a day, nothing to really do in the home of the Mormons, and hoped back we were a day late coming back as we had to hop several connections what a time

Come on, I just do crazy stuff period! How about the one time when I was 17 and went to West Hollywood with some straight and gay friends. I couldn't get into any clubs, so one of my friends was like "Whatever, we'll window watch and go to Denny's" As we walked to Denny's cars kept slowing down, tapping their horns, then driving off. When one man stuck his head out the window and asked if we were working I finally figured it out. They thought we were prostitutes! On our way back to Denny's one car was so brazen as to stop, a passenger opened the door, and pulled the seat forward to "let us in" ... my friend screamed "What?! No way!" and he said, "Don't be picky, we weren't" to which she replied, "We aren't hookers! I'm not a hooker! I have style! I have STYLE!" I was just laughing my butt off as she stomped toward them screaming in her little 5' tall petite glory.

Or the time we were in Oakhurst for the night to ski in Yosemite the next day ... decided it would be a bright idea to walk down the main road and try to find something to do. Saw a guy riding his skateboard across the street so we followed him to a guy in a truck saying stupid stuff like, "Um, what town is this? What is there to do?" Ended up in the truck heading like 10 miles out of town into the mountains with two weird guys - Tony and Dusty ... Dusty and his Dusty truck. Get to Tony's parents place which is like an Escher painting - stairs to everywhere and no-where. Up and turn on one flight there was a door, we're told to be quiet his parents are sleeping, in the door we go to a game room. There's a tv near the door and a couch, across the room is a pool table and another couch. I spaced out on the tv, it was some old 80's flick, like the Breakfast Club or something. Suddenly I heard my friends voice raise and then Dusty said, "We could kill you and leave your bodies in the woods, no one would find you" I replied in a voice so cold my friend said she thought I had the devil in me, "Not if I kill you first" Tony said, "I think um, we better take you back to town now" In silence we road back to town where they dropped us off. We began walking the mile up the road to our hotel, when Dusty returned, we hid behind a 7-11. The night guy there came out to toss some trash and nearly punched me out because he "wasn't expecting anyone to be out here" We told him we were hiding, he said it was where he'd hide too. We thought Dusty was gone, done washing his truck across the street at the quarter wash. So we ducked off to the Safeway down the street to use the toilet and get some gummy worms. When we came back out, he was spinning 8's in the parking lot drying his truck! So we hummed mission impossible and ducked through the shopping carts, hoping to go unnoticed.

No such luck. Soon he was driving slowly down the road watching us. Then as we were about to cross a driveway he pulled in and cut off our path, then just stared at us. My friend stomped up to him and screamed, "What?! What do you want! OMG you are so creepy!" Then we ran, ducking into the nearest hotel parking lot even though ours was way down the road. We walked in the bushes the rest of the way - I'm alive to tell that story ;)

Oh yeah, years later I finally asked her what had happened to make her voice raise and for that guy to say that ... she said they were trying to figure out who was going to do who and on what couch ... they thought we were hookers. She was shouting, "We aren't hookers!" We were 15 ... guess she told me that part of the story after we went to WEHO, hahah!

Oh and I have to have the tickets, I have a set of their lyrics framed and sitting in my bedroom! Whenever I'm down I just remember that, it's only in my head that I feel left out and looked down on ;)

Finally got a flight - went to change planes in Denver, got delayed for 6 hrs -got on the plane - they kept us on the tarmac for another 1 1/2 hrs. We FINALLY got to our destination 41 hours after our original arrival time. But our luggage didn't - it made it after another 38 hours. Now that's crazy...

I went to Disneyland for two days with three hot babes. They abandoned me for an audioanimatronic Captain Jack, but I redeemed myself by gettin' jiggy with an asteroid on Space Mountain. But the most fun was going directly to Pirate Island where I imagined I was shipwrecked with only babes and rum...

So I went and got her then on tuesday I was supposed to go out with my boyfriend but then he called me and he had to go into work. SO instead of going out and breaking up with me he did it on the phone. So I really need a fun night out please.

Yeah... it was a great experience to sit around with about 150 people as bored as I was - listening to some soap opera blare on five different tvs and the oh-so-sweet aroma of burned popcorn that someone had overcooked...

Also, for those of you feeling the sadness of "an ending of an era," feel sad no more! There IS hope on the way and it's not John Kerry! It's called American Sound Recording Studios. I do, indeed, work for the company, so this could be viewed as shameless self-promotion, but I promise you when I speak of this place, I am speaking as a loyal local musician and not an employee. Bakersfield musicians HAVE to come check this place out! It's the largest recording facility on the west coast with some of the best gear from LA to San Fransisco. Don't let the kiddish marketing fool you... The only way to believe and understand the awesomeness of this new facility is to see it with your own eyes. The doors are wide open and you're all more than welcome to come through and tour what is the most exciting development in the Bakersfield Music Scene in quite some time!

A Call To Arms: a fight against musical suicide

Interesting thoughts... and some good points in there. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Bakersfield's biggest problem is lack of promoters. We only have a handful of venues in town and only 2 or 3 with a decent stage and/or sound system. What do Bakersfield bands have to look forward to locally? Why should they be inspired to play here? It's sad but true.

And for some reason, local promoters completely rely on the bands to promote shows? That is a slap in the face and band's should not even entertain the lazy folks who place this burden on the bands. If you were to drive 2 hours in any direction and learn a thing or 2 about a good music scene, promoters would have much more respect for how things should be done.

In sum, we need venues and promoters (real ones).

Well, you certainly sound like a hard-working, conscientious student. Don't give up your dreams.

You didn't say if you were a full time student or a part-time student. Most folks in the work force who are students are part-time students, most go to school at night. So, you might want to consider reducing your course load and expenses that way.

Takes longer to get that degree, but, the only other option is to quit your job and go full time, and get some loans. Please note that most loans don't have to be paid back right after you graduate - you can get structured terms and pay over time.

If you have been able to buy a condo at such a young age (congratulations by the way, I didn't buy my first house until I was 34), you must have a pretty decent job, especially without a degree.
Most corporations have educational assistance for their employees, provided that the courses taken can be shown to be relevent to their future career with the corporation. You may want to look into that with your employer if you haven't already.

Other than that, getting a loan seems to be your best option. Although it may sound like a lot of money now, in the long run (when you are an old fart like me), it will be a drop in the bucket compared to the increased lifetime earnings you can expect to have with that degree (or degrees).

Someone once told me, "If you want to make money, you have to spend money." Sadly, there's a lot of truth to that. Good luck to you. Hope you resolve your dilemma!

Words can not explain the feeling of hearing something that you so lovingly created recorded for all to hear. And the end product was Excellent. Max Reese Is A Recording Genius And A Master Of A Lost Art! He can make anyone sound good and that is not an easy task. haha When you spend time in the building you can feel the history and the presence of all the talented individuals that had recorded there flow from the very walls within. Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty, Korn, Bucks Owens and many many more have graced this place with their very essence. Very sad to see it end. Very Sad.

They are closer than anybody wants to accept. I also have a hard time when anybody declares a religion a bad group of people. There are bad within all classifications of people. Goodness, if you ask the KKK, they are the most God bearing people you can encounter. However, that hasn't tarnished the Christian faith in America, why should any other religion be treated differently. Now I'm rambling. hehe.

Wow. Working on the "streets of Rosedale", trying not to get run over by buttheads w/hummers and too big trucks to match too little brains--I now know why I stay away from downtown. Which is so sad because folks like us have money to spend not bullets to send. Hard to say but GOOD JOB BPD!! xxoocf

You are completely right, and I am aware of this. I brought up the middle east thing mostly because the associations people make are with the Middle East. But in the midst of my editing of things, I realized that I actually nixed the part where I talk about the origins in India. Again though, I agree that I didn't make the distinction clear.

I know it might be irrelavant to the gist of the article, or mistaken for an issue of semantics, but even grouping a set of Indians with Middle-Easterners displays ignorance. India is a South Asian country, and while it borders the Middle East, it's distinctly cultured compared to Middle Eastern countries.

Annie, you would really like the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi. I was totally blown away by all the stuff I had forgotten. You are young enough to perhaps have not known it, but regardless we all should remember Ronnie. A great American.
