Czech Symphony Orchestra

Spend an evening with The Czech Symphony Orchestra at the Rabobank Theater. Join the Bakersfield Community Concert Association as this extraordinary orchestra of 67 musicians brings the music of the Czech Republic to Bakersfield.

The US tour includes a concert at the University of Notre Dame at South Bend. The Orchestra also visits the California cities of Fresno and Sacramento.

The Czech Symphony Orchestra (also known as The Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra of Ostrava) was established in 1954 and arose from the Czech Radio Orchestra. In a short time it became one of the foremost symphony orchestras in the country. Since its first tour abroad in 1958, The Czech Symphony Orchestra has visited most of Europe, the U.S., Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Many significant Czech and foreign guest artists have performed with the Orchestra, including Václav Neumann, Václav Smetáèek, Jiøí Bìlohlávek, Libor Pešek, Zdenìk Mácal, Charles Mackerras, Arvid Jansons, Vladimír Fedosejev, Serge Baudo, Roberto Benzi, Helmut Rilling and others. Other important instrumentalists who have performed with the Orchestra include Ivan Moravec, Josef Suk, Václav Hudeèek, Lazar Berman, André Navarro, János Starker, Rudolf Kerer, and Mistaslav Rostropovich and Gidon Kremer as well as vocalists are Placido Domingo, José Carreras, Montserrat Caballé, Katja Ricciarelli, Eva Urbanová, Dagmar Pecková, and Gaetana Bardini.

The Czech Symphony Orchestra is renowned for its performances of the works of Janáèek and other significant Czech composers such as Dvorák, Smetana and Martinù, however the Orchestra’s repertoire goes far beyond the works of Czech composers, and includes, to name a few, the works of Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, R. Strauss, Reger, Szymanowski, Schumann, Bruch, and Bruckner. The Czech Symphony Orchestra has also recorded for a number of labels including Panton, Rosa, Direkt, Centaur, Naxos, Palatina, and Brilliant Classics for which they just recorded six CD’s of works by Nielsen and Dvorak. Their next recording project which will be for the Brilliant Classics label will be a three-cd box set of the complete works of Smetana.

This concert puts Bakersfield on the international map! Check out Maestro Kuchar's "other" orchestra, the Czech Symphony Orchestra (The Janáček Philharmonic of Ostrava, Czech Republic) as it wraps up its celebrated American Tour.

Pavlo

Spend an evening with Pavlo at the Rabobank Theater. Join the Bakersfield Community Concert Association as this extraordinary guitarist brings Mediterranean Music to Bakersfield.

The intoxicating music of Pavlo defies easy definition. That's not a problem, for his passionate sounds are aimed at the heart and soul, not the intellect. The artist himself offers the most accurate description. "I just call it Mediterranean guitar music, for I combine Greek music with Spanish and classical elements. The general public just wants music that moves them." The public is indeed moved by the songs of this Toronto-based guitarist and composer. His first two releases, 1998's self-titled debut and 1999's Juno-nominated Fantasia have been certified Gold in Canada. Even greater success is predicted for Pavlo's much-anticipated new CD, I Feel Love Again. Pavlo's musical eclecticism came naturally, and from an early age. "I started playing guitar at age 10, and I got into both blues-rock and classical guitarists around the same time. I was inspired by people like Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen, but I also studied classical guitar and kept listening to and playing the Greek music that is my heritage. I always had these parallel musical lives." Inevitably, he found himself playing the Toronto club circuit in rock bands, some of which came close to breaking into the big time. "Right through this period, I had been playing in a Greek wedding band, and I started to write in this vein for the first time," he recalls. The instantly positive reaction to his debut CD confirmed Pavlo was on the right track. The primary legacy from his rock 'n roll days is his flamboyant performance style. "Not many artists in the nouveau flamenco field play the guitar behind their back or jump into the audience!", he laughs. His virtuosity on guitar has been a key ingredient in his success, but Pavlo notes that "first and foremost, I am a writer. That is my driving passion." His compositional skills are now much in demand. Popular TV series, The Chris Isaak Show has used two of his pieces, and Pavlo recently wrote a song specifically for another Canadian guitar maestro, Liona Boyd. An extensive Canadian tour opening for and performing with Boyd has further spread the word on Pavlo, who routinely blew both audience and critics away. "Pavlo and his band stole the show with their vibrant playing," raved a reviewer from the Regina Leader-Post. Pavlo is playing APX9NAs in both live and studio settings.

Rich vocal harmonies and shredding instrumentalism sum up the sound of Cody Bryant and the Riders of the Purple Sage. It's new guys with a new twist on a vintage sound. From movie cowboy music (Tumbling Tumbleweeds, Ghost Riders in the Sky, Cool Water) to catchy new originals and burning bluegrass inspired instrumentals, the Riders put on a snappy show. Campfire yes, sleepy no.

Unforgettable melodies, tight harmonies, red-hot musicianship and a fast-paced show are the trademarks of Riders of the Purple Sage. Led by Foy Willing in the 1940s and Cody Bryant today, they redefine classic western movie music with a sound that is uniquely their own. With deep roots in many American folk styles, they blend elements of the classic sound of Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers with bluegrass, Cajun and Bob Willis-style western swing into their own musical vision.

Pre-concert music will be provided by the Frontier High School choir directed by Forrest Madewell.
