Like batteries, it's prohibited to dispose of fluorescent light bulbs in your home trash can. In fact, it's against the law. Instead, you should be taking them to the Kern County Special Waste Facility at 4951 Standard St. in Bakersfield. The facility is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. (The county operates a second facility on the first Saturday of the month at the Mojave Airport.) One small light bulb may seem insignificant, but throw hundreds in a landfill and you've got enough mercury to constitute a hazardous waste pile. You might sigh at the thought of making a special trip, but it's likely you have other items to take to the Special Waste Facility: It's also prohibited to throw out any of the following in the regular trash: paints, household pesticides, weed killers, pool chemicals, cleaning products (like Windex and bleach), mercury thermometers and electronic waste (which includes television, computers, laptops, printers, radios, microwave ovens,...
