I have lived here for 13 years or so. Moved here from LA. Big shopping culture shock in Bakersfield. I think that is most people's biggest complaint. In addition to the lack of commercial businesses here also. I would have to agree with having friends. That seems invaluable living here. You have to be able to start having fun even if there is no external source that seems appealing. Having friends can make the most boring situation fun and enjoyable. I do not speak from experience. I do not have very many friends as I have moved from LA and switch schools so many times that I have lost touch with anyone from my school days. The people I meet here that were born and raised here are so shocked by my LA attitude and expectations. Some times I feel "out of place" here but I am used to feeling that way. It has become normal to me. I've tried to make friends... but its like trying to make friends in school, everyone already has made friends. So I keep myself busy with part time work...
