There are some great names already mentioned in the comments above - I'm a big fan of Dave Brubeck and the Dirty Dozen, as well as Al (too many notes) Di Meola and Thelonius Monk. Still, I think one of my all time favorites is the Paul Cierly group from the CSUB Jazz program's CD Twirl - from the opening sax riff on "Deely Bops" to the building funk vibe of "Not Necessarily" they're a great example of what Doug Davis has done to nurture and inspire some amazing music!
