Sandrini's September 12th The Councilmen w/ Guest Larry Bagby, BigBang & Last American Buffallo

Should be a heck of a night. Not only are we hosting two GREAT bands Bigbang & Last American Buffallo, but the video crew from LP33, will be shooting footage for The Councilmen’s profile. LP33 is a new website, the brain child of Andrew Bentley (google him!) that helps artists without labels get their music out there. We have been chosen as featured artist! The site will launch early October.

Larry Bagby actor/singer/songwriter known for his part as the standup bass player in “Walk the Line” is also a LP33 featured artist and will be sitting in with The Councilmen on the 12^th, we’re doing some cross promotion.

So come out met Larry, musicians hear a little about what LP33 is and what it can do for you as an artist, get your faces on camera and show some SUPPORT for The Councilmen.

Bakersfield Community Theatre Playhouse presents Neil Simon's "Plaza Suite!"

Bakersfield Community Theatre Playhouse invites you to the first show of our 82^nd season, Neil Simon’s “Plaza Suite!” The show dates are: September 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20 at 8 p.m. and September 14 and 21 at 2 p.m. For the 8 p.m. showing the doors will be open at 7:30, and for the 2 p.m. matinees they will open at 1:30. Adult prices are $12. Students, seniors, and active military are $10. Delicious all-beef hot dogs, chips, candy, and refreshments will be sold as well. In China, it is simply known as 'The River.' But the Yangtze and all of the life that surrounds it is undergoing an astonishing transformation wrought by the largest hydroelectric project in history, the Three Gorges Dam. Chinese-Canadian director Yung Chang returns to the gorgeous, now-disappearing landscape of his grandfathers youth to trace the surreal life of a farewell cruise that traverses the gargantuan waterway. With a humanist gaze and wry wit Chang’s Upstairs Downstairs approach captures the microcosmic society of the luxury liner. Below deck: a bewildered young girl trains as a dishwasher sent to work by her peasant family, who is on the verge of relocation from the encroaching flood waters. Above deck: wealthy international tourists set sail to catch a last glance of a country in dramatic flux. The teenage employees who serve and entertain them tagged with new Westernized names like Cindy and Jerry by upper management warily grasp at the prospect of a better future. "Up the Yangtze" gives a human dimension to the wrenching changes facing not only an increasingly globalized China, but the world at large. In English, Mandarin and Cantonese with English subtitles.

4th Annual B-Town Blues Fest

World Records presents

The 4th Annual B-Town Blues Fest is on its way! - Saturday, September 13, 3 pm to 10 pm at the CSUB Amphitheater. Elvin Bishop will headline after performances by Rick Estrin and the Nightcats, Shana Morrison (I LOVE saying that Van's daughter is playing the blues fest!), Patrick Sweany, the Flying Arvizu Brothers and Paul Perez. Great food and cool drinks will abound. Once again the show benefits Houchin Blood Bank. Give blood!

The amphitheater is a wonderful, relaxing venue with terrific acoustics and views. Once the sun is about an hour from setting the amphitheater is an incredible location for a show. Your special someone might even want to sit close as the temperatures drop. But what about the afternoon?? Sorry we had to wait until our 10th amphitheater show to come up with this, but here it is --- We are bringing in a crane to erect a huge panel just west of the amphitheater to throw a big shadow so everyone can enjoy the show from start to finish. And WHAT a show it's going to be!!

(Here's the make-you-squirm part. Welcome to my world!) We have to sell 1500 tickets to pay for this year's blues fest. Reserved tickets at tables of 6 are $40. Lawn tickets are $30 for adults, Free for kids age 17 and under, and $20 for folks age 18 to 25. 1500 tickets is not a big deal if we get a little help from a lot of people. For starters we need to sell the 100 tables. A table of 6, dinner included is $300. If you have a group of friends or know a business that would want to join the fun please forward this info or let us know whom we should contact. Businesses that help will be featured in the B-Town Blues Fest program.

The Reading Express Book Drive

In an effort to promote literacy among young children in our community, Golden Empire Transit (GET) will launch The Reading Express, an on-board library program in September 2008.

The Reading Express is geared towards children ages birth to 3rd grade and will encourage early literacy. During the initial kick-off, forty-one of GET's buses will be stocked with a selection of children's books for kids to read while commuting with their parents. As new buses are added to the fleet, they too will be stocked with books.

Russo's Books at The Marketplace will host the 1st Book Drive for The Reading Express on Saturday September 13th from 1pm-3pm. Donate a book and receive a coupon for a free scoop of ice cream, courtesy of Baskin- Robbins.

Kids of all ages love good stories and good ice cream. Now you can share the books that your kids and grandkids have outgrown by donating them to The Reading Express. All of those great old stories will be new again to a whole new generation of readers. See you at Russo's Books on the 13th!
