Changes, needs, and wants for 2010.
Change brings inspiration and personal growth. It throws your strength in your face. It yells to you, “Can you take it? Can you face it?”
I’ve lived in Bakersfield all my life. I was wrapped up in a day to day desk-job routine for years, only making it downtown for a brew at Guthrie’s on a weekend here and there or to grab a bite to eat at the Spotlight Cafe.
My first experience with First Friday was an evening back in late spring. I found myself watching Nyoka, Jen Raven and Corky running around like chicks with their heads cut off hosting a sidewalk fundraiser on the porch of The Basement Gallery on 19th Street.
The force effortlessly looked ravishing with their curled and pinned hair in their rockabilly black dresses and red lipstick. I watched people throwing wet sponges at poor Bry-Bry’s face through a beautifully painted carnival style prop. “Only a dollar a ticket!! Support your local artists!!”
First Friday (held every first Friday of the month in downtown Bakersfield), opened my eyes and gave me hope in finding a new group of friends in the art community. That very night I met a couple new friends, Kevin and Gabe. At the end of the night we all found ourselves down at a local watering hole, The Silver Fox. I was introduced to Nyoka and Jen and there at that moment, something changed. My life hasn’t been the same.
The struggles of 2009 be damned; the closing of The Basement, relocation and later vandalism of Burn the Witch IV, and the current economic situation to name a few. Throughout the turmoil I have formed lifetime relationships I hold dear. I consider myself a lucky woman to have grown so far in such little time. The support I’ve received from this group is immeasurable. The camaraderie is comforting.
BECA’s growth and changes over the last few months were born of hard work and determination. BECA has achieved a NonProfit status and officially installed the group’s 2010 officers; Nyoka Jameson-President, Faith Flores-Vice President, Christina Sweet-Treasurer and Serena Victoria-Secretary. Structure has been established. Goals have been set. Our future is strong.
Bring it on 2010!
