Monday, September 10th, 2006, World Records, Bakersfield, CA..

It was too late for some, but not late enough for me and the handful of other fans onhand to see progressive rockers, Idle Revolution inside Bako's oldest independent record music store, World Records.

Unless you've been listening to some lame emo stuff on the radio, you may have already heard of this band. I rave about them all the time here on Bakotopia. Young musicians of a higher intelligence?

Scientist rock? Prog rock? A deeper shade of soul?

Idle Revolution have been going at for awhile now, writing some of Bakersfield's best new music.

Much like their musical brethren, The Mars Volta, for whom IR jammed out for at World Records on this particular evening, Idle Revolution are breaking new ground locally..

Starting with vocalist Micah Card in their line-up, the band instantly demands attention. Card's a female rocker who brings a much needed element to the local scene. Her ability to handle the IR's difficult compositions, require much more than your average rock vocalist and hair swinger. She wails, stays in tune, and feels the vibe.

Guitarist Sam Jarvis, who moves his body as much as his fingers glide across the fretboard, is almost too much for one band to handle. How does he contain himself? The dude is an amazing guitarist who performs with finesse in the midst of chaos.

The Idle Revolution style is chaotic. Not a bad thing....

Keeping time is drummer Chase Brockett who, on this evening overindulged in potatoes (that's what he said,) and almost puked all over his set. Thank god that didn't happen. World Records owner, Pat Evans, would've pulled the plug on all future shows.....yikes..

Chase takes full advantage of his youthful energy and establishes a steady beat for the band to follow. Adding color to each song, during mellow sections, his performance never ceases to amaze me. Ahhh..the wonders and energy of youth..

Going back to what I said about chaotic. Try being bassist Angel Ornelas, an FSU student who commutes to Bako for shows. How he follows Chase's drumming is anyone's guess. The anchor in the midst of it all is Ornelas, who requires total concentration to interweave intricate bass lines between Sam and Chase....

This band is not for music fans looking for a quick fix. IR's songs are lengthy, at times over the top, but never boring...

Is this a return of bands like Emerson, Lake, & Palmer, YES, Rush, The Mother's, Funkadelic (the original, before Parliament) ????

Idle Revolution threw down as usual. Get the potatoes out of your ears, put the bong down and get to their next show!!

Attention Bakersfield music scenesters..If you can't play more than three chords, go home and practice...

Check out Idle Revolution here on Bakotopia.com!!

Big-Ups to Pat Evans of World Records for supporting Bakersfield's music scene! Support your local indie music store!!!
