Hi-yo, your friend the Theatre Addict here to tell you about cool stuff coming up this weekend and beyond in the world of Bakersfield drama.  From a free costume workshop to a "beer pong" fundraiser, this weekend is packed with fun things to do.  Here's the low-down, but keep it on the down-low...spread the word.

First, a FREE COSTUMING WORKSHOP AT THE SPOTLIGHT THEATRE!
Costuming A Song for Vanya

This class will include how to costume a show from planning and design through execution.  Taught by award winning costume designer Emily Thiroux, members of the class will learn how to research, create a costume plot, design, render, and sew or acquire the costumes for Spotlight Theatre's spring production of A Song for Vanya.  The first class will be Saturday morning, November 4 from 10 AM till noon.  The class will meet as needed after that to complete the task of costuming the show.  This class is offered by the Spotlight Theatre Foundation without charge as a special project in conjunction with our production of A Song for Vanya.  Please reserve your place in the class by calling Spotlight Theatre and School of Arts at 634-0692.

First Class Meeting:  Saturday, November 4 from 10 AM - Noon.

Next...it's a PAID acting gig that you can audition for.  Yes, you get paid for playing around in costumes.  That's why theatre rocks.

The Spotlight needs 8 actors for a Murder Mystery on Saturday Sept 30th... if you are interested, respond to this e-mail.

Our next item brings together two of my favorite things.  Beer and theatre.  I fa-reaking love beer...and theatre.

Here's a fundraiser you can really raise your glass to!

The Empty Space will be hosting a Beer Pong event. We are now accepting registration of teams to become Beer Pong Champions. Teams consist of two people, and we require an entry fee of $20 per team (that's only $10 a person!).

This price includes lunch, entry in our door prize raffle, and entry into the Beer Pong Championship. The winning team wins cash prizes!

Our Beer Pong event will be held Saturday, October 7 starting at 12 PM.
For more information call 327-PLAY or visit us online at www.esonline.org.

NOTE: You must be 21 or older to attend this event!

Did you know that local theatre companies have banded together to ADVERTISE B-Town drama on TV?  It happened, all thanks to a grant from...um...I think the Arts Coalition of Kern, and Brighthouse pitched in some free air time as well, and...I'm sorry I don't remember those details too well.  Anyway, here are some dates and times when you can check out the commercials.
SEND YOUR FEEDBACK!  What do you like about the spots, and what needs improvement?  Do you think this is a good way to expand our audience?
If you want to check out the "Theatre... that's the ticket!" commercial this week, here are the times it will be airing on KBAK and KBFX:

I know I'm forgetting something else that I need to throw at you but I can't remember right this second.  Anywayssss.

Last but definitely not least, as always there are a crap-load of really good shows to see in Bakersfield.  Don't miss Fuddy Meers in it's closing weekend, it's really different!  I went to see it twice in fact, to show my support.  The cast really deserves a standing ovation in my opinion and I hope they get one before the show closes.  I here that "The Full Monty" is very good also and that it got a standing "O" on opening night.  I will be going to see it on Sunday.  Maybe I'll see you there.  Here's the SOYP guide to this weekend.  Peace out, babies.

1. Fuddy Meers
at THE EMPTY SPACE (prime time)
Written by David Lindsay-Abarre
Directed by Cory Rickard

Friday and Saturday at 8p

Fuddy Meers starts off just as just another normal day for Claire (Ariane Sarzotti). She wakes up and greets the morning. Her husband, Richard (Joel Walton), brings her a cup of coffee, and patiently explains that she suffers from a form of psychogenic amnesia that erases her memory every night when she goes to sleep. Claire takes the news rather cheerfully, but unlike other mornings, has a few serious questions to ask. Things really start to go awry when a furtive limping, lisping, half-deaf man in a ski mask (Don Kruska) kidnaps Claire, and her husband will stop at nothing to get her back. Other characters we meet along Claire's journey include Kenny (Jarrod Ackerley), Claire's overgrown eighth grade son who has issues of his own, Claire's mother, Gertie (Amy Hall), who speaks in "stroke talk," Millet (David Rock), an ex-convict with a foul mouthed puppet, and Heidi (Guinevere Park-Hall Dethlefson), a very intense woman in uniform. David Lindsay-Abaire's wacky yet poignant comedy  directing by founding Empty Space member Cory Rickard proves that no family dysfunction is insurmountable.

This hilarious comedy is intended for adults.

Admission to this production is FREE with donations accepted

The Empty Space is located at 706 Oak Street.

More information can be obtained by calling The Empty Space at 327-PLAY (327-7529).

2. PicnicWhat starts as neighborhood picnic to celebrate the end of another run-of-the-mill Summer turns into a life-changing twenty-four hours for a group of women in a small, mid-western town.

ONGOING:
at BAKERSFIELD COMMUNITY THEATRE
Written by William Inge
Directed by Barry Wolcott

Friday and Saturday at 8p
Sunday at 2p

Madge Owens (Kelci Lowry), the town beauty queen, catches the attention of drifter Hal Carter (Sam Hall), who comes into town to meet up with his friend from college Alan (Travis Glenn) who is coincidentally also Madge's boyfriend. Madge's mother, Flo (Jill Kelbert) has one main concern - tosee that Madge finds happiness with Alan and not relive her mistakes while younger daughter Millie, (Jodi Lowry) finds solace in books, art, poetry and her beloved neighbor, Mrs. Potts (Morning Miller) even when accosted by neighborhood delivery boy, Bomber (Hector Rubio.)

Spinster school teacher, Rosemary sydney (JulieJordan Scott) is admired by her teacher peers, Irma Kronkite (Meg Swift) and Christine Shoen walder,(Fred Barnett) but continues to focus on what she is missing in her relationship with local small businessman, Howard Bevans, (Mark Tarango).

"Picnic" was the Winner of the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Outer Circle Award, the New York Drama Critics Award, and a Donaldson Award.

The story takes place in 1950s small-town Kansas, but this is not a simple celebration of heartland values.

Bakersfield Community Theatre is located at 2400 South Chester Avenue (Just North of Wilson)

3. The Full Monty
at THE SPOTLIGHT THEATER
Book by Terrence McNally
Lyrics by David Yazbek
Music by David Yazbek
Directed by Hal Friedman

Friday and Saturday at 8:00pm
Sunday at 2:00pm

Come see the hit movie that was Americanized into the smash Broadway production!

Seeing how much their wives enjoy watching male strippers during their "Girls' Night Out," unemployed steelworkers in Buffalo, New York come up with a bold way to make some quick cash. In the process they find renewed self-esteem, the importance of friendship and the ability to have fun.

As the guys work through their fears, self-consciousness, feelings of worthlessness and anxieties (over everything from being overweight to child custody, bigotry to being gay), they come to discover that not only are they stronger as a group, but that the strength they find in each other gives them the individual courage to face their demons and overcome them.

There is great heart to THE FULL MONTY, and the ultimate themes expressed in the show, about taking charge of one's life and following one's dreams are great lessons for all of us.

Tickets for this event are $18 for general admission, $15 for students, seniors, and active military, $12 for kids under 11.

Save $3 by getting your tickets a day in advance of the performance!

The Spotlight Theatre is located at 1622 19th Street, downtown Bakersfield

4. Major League Improv
at THE SPOTLIGHT THEATER

Saturday 6:00pm

Looking for some Major League funny on a Saturday night?

A Major League Improv match features two teams of improvisers competing for laughs and points, with a referee keeping things moving and calling fouls. An average of seven to twelve games are played during a match, drawn from a repertoire of over a hundred improv games. For example, in "Shakespeare" a team will improvise a scene inspired by an audience suggestion in Shakespearean style. In the game of "Elimination Rap", a player will create a rap on the spot, trading off each yo mama's phrases, getting thrown out if they fall off the meter, or fail to rhyme. In Forward/Reverse" a player sends another player back and forth at will, as though scanning a scene in a VCR, sending players into a frenzy. Every show is different, with different players, different games, and different audiences supplying new suggestions.

$6 Students and $8 Adults at the door.

The Spotlight Theater is located at
1622 19th Street.

You can save a buck by calling (661) 634-0692 and making reservations.

8. Pump Boys and Dinettes
at THE STARS DINNER THEATER
Music and lyrics by Jim Wann

Friday and Saturday 6:30pm for dinner, 8pm show
Sunday at 12:30p for lunch, 2pm show

As the house opens, Pump Boys Jim, Eddie, Jackson and L.M. come out on stage to tune their instruments. Besides being 'Pump Boys', they are actors, singers, dancers and musicians. While they are busy tuning and chatting, the Dinettes, Prudie and Rhetta, are preparing their Diner for opening and have a little chat with the incoming curius audience. Once when everybody is seated, the show can begin.

Pump Boys and Dinettes -- A Rock 'n Roll - Country & Blues Musical Revue -- is the sort of show that feeds off the energy and pleasure of its audience, celebrating life and love in a small, southern town.

Half of the clever setting is a country diner out on Highway 57, somewhere between Frog Level and Smyrna, and the other half is a gas station, meant to be located on the other side of the highway. Its characters are four guys who pump gas, and two gals, the Cupp sisters, waitress/proprietors of the Double Cupp Diner across the highway. These are six relentlessly cheerful people out to have a good time.

at the GASLIGHT MELODRAMA THEATRE
Written by "Melodrama" Mike O' Roark
Directed by Michael Prince

Fridays at 7pm
Saturdays at 1pm & 7pm
Sundays at 2pm

Sad times have befallen the Last Territorial Bank and Telegraph Company.  President, and Founder, J.P. Moneylender, is missing and presumed dead. Though not "physically" present, his presence is strongly felt in the form of a "living portrait", (his eyes really do follow you around the room, and much more), which hangs in the bank.  In his "absence", Hilregard Moneylender, J.P.'s new wife and step-mother to our lovely heroine, Marion, has taken over the day to day duties of the bank.  The evil Smedley Chetum, (not one to let an opportunity slip through his fingers), does his best to take slimy advantage of the situation.  All is not as it appears in this tale.  Take nothing for granted and beware of sharp plot twists.

Prices are $17 for adults, $15 for seniors and students, and $7.50 for children 12 and under.

14. TheatreAddict.com
http://www.theatreaddict.co...!

TheatreAddict.com is the new Bakersfield theatre website created by Aaron Mauldin, dedicated to bringing the dramatic arts to the masses! The site includes an interactive events calendar, discussion board, and coming in April: non-stop updates with new articles, reviews, pictures, and backstage interviews with your favorite actors & directors. Now you can keep track of ALL Bakersfield theatre on one website. He even pastes this e-mail on the site every Wednesday or Thursday so you can always find an up-to-date theatre guide when you need it.

Fellow theatre addicts, this is your website and he wants you to help him make it the best. Starting in April, he will be going to see shows and adding content, but one man can't do everything so he's counting on you to help the growth of this movement in the theatre community. Send him your comments, thoughts, articles, pictures, anything and he will post them! We can't always count on the local media to represent local theatre so it's time we started doing so on our own. He wants theatreaddict.com to be a tool we can all use to bring the theatre community together and show Bakesfield what amazing entertainment is being created on stages around town.
