My husband Albie and I went to see Cyndi Lauper in concert last night, September 16, 2006 .
The concert was at the gorgeous Fox Theatre here in Bakersfield, Ca.
Well, as you can expect, Cyndi was awesome!! We had front row seats and so we got to see her so close all the time. That was the best! The show started off with a comediane (can't remember her name).
Cyndi started her 1st song at 9:20 pm. It was all dark and she had a flashing light on her as she sang "Mac the Knife" slowly. She had on a black cape over her head, so all you could see was her face. Her next song was "That's What I Think". She spoke to us about being here last year and what a different experience it had been because of the hotel that she was in this year.
Next, she sang "Drove All Night" 2 little girls went up to the stage to give her flowers as well as about 4 ladies. She recieved them with a great big smile. This is one of my fave songs, and she still sings it so wonderfully! Cyndi was barefoot and she laydown on the ground a couple of times.
After this song was over she said that the next song rhymes with the previous song. That she didn't plan it out that way in case someone out there thought that she was trying to be creative or something. I love how she talks to us between her songs! Her next song ....of course rhyming was: "All Through the Night". She sang this song as beautifully as ever. I especially loved the end when she sings the ooooo oooooo ooooooooooooo....you know the part!?! This was the 1st song she got off stage to go into the audience....love that about her also.
She's not afraid of being touched, hugged..etc..and it brings quite an excitement cause if you are close to the stage you get to really see her up close! Before the next song she took the time to talk about how human rights is so important to her before she sang the next song. She also said that a concert with all women is coming soon, including Blondie and some others and that proceeds will go to ....Sorry, I can't remember the acronym she gave us, but that it was to raise awareness for different lifestyles.
Of course her next song was beautiful "True Colors". She seemed to have a little bit of a cry in her voice as she sang this song. Which of course made me cry as I lay my head on my husband's shoulder. I know the significance of this song, and I'm not afraid to say that I still love that song! 2 people came up and laid a beautiful rainbow afgan on the foot of the stage. She didn't notice it was an afgan until she sang the next 3 songs, but when she did she cuddled up with it on the floor.
Her next song was an up beat "She Bop" totally different than last years rendition. I loved this year's more than last years:) So glad she sang that one since it reminds me of when I was in 6th grade...fun year, anyway. Her next song was "Sisters Of Avalon" Just beautiful! Before she sang the next song she turned to her band and gave them a big smile....it was "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun". She got off the stage right away, into the audience.
All kinds of girls followed her and I got up and followed as I saw one of my best friends from high school get up. I hadn't seen her since high school so it was quite an experience!! Love ya Mary!
Cyndi somehow got back on stage and split the audience in 3 we each had to sing a part she gave us...kind of like when you sing row row row your boat in sections. We had the part....girls just wanna have fun so we sang that over and over again as we were jumping and waving our hands to Cyndi... Cyndi reminded us not to crush the little girls that were in the crowd.
The next song she sang she said was written with her son in mind. It was "Above the Clouds". She was upset because they had moved her boxes that she uses to get off stage, so she had her helper fix that as she went off the stage by the side steps instead. She grabbed a man's hand and pulled him off his seat. She then stood up on it and sang most of the song standing on his chair.
Next was "Other Side of Here" I hadn't heard that one before, it was quite beautiful. "Changes" was next. After that one I think she added a song called "Are You Still With Me" or something like that. My other fave song was next and it was "Shine"! I love the lyrics to this song!! Makes me feel strong and that everything will be ok when I sing along with her in the car:)
She got off stage once again and sang among the audience. Cyndi and her band members went off stage and then they returned after about 3 minutes. She had a water bottle in her hand and said she would sing the next song because we used to like it. It was "Unchained Melody" Time After Time" was next and you could hear the echo of people singing along with her. She sat between her bass player and her violinist as she played her instrument of choice. Her last song was "Money Changes Everything" Crossing the stage over and over again as she knew it was her last song for the night. She made eye contact with as many people as she could. After she finished her song she grabbed the rainbow afgan from the floor and waved her thanks to us.
It was incredible to see her so close all through the concert! Her amazing voice filled the theatre all through the night! When the lights went on people started to file out and my husband and I waited until the crowd dissipated. My husband told me to go ask for the set list....it was attached to the floor with masking tape.
Cyndi would look down at it to remind her of the order of the songs. So I got up in front of the stage waving my arms trying to get the attention of the workers bringing down the stage. I was able to get the attention of her main helper and he very graciously handed me the set list! What a night! My husband and I then went to a couple of friend's birthday parties and continued on til 4 am! That's a story for another post!
Well, I hope you enjoyed my review of the concert! Let me know what you think of it;)

ahh yes the wait till everyone is gone and snag the set list trick. I learned that trick from non other than Matt Munoz himself. I once got an Allman Brothers set list straight from Gregg Allmans keyboard, it had his piece of gum stuck to it. I gave it to a friend of mine who was a bigger fan than I. Sounds like a great show, now I wish I had gone. JR
