Winners of first newspaper Web contest chosen
The Marco News in Marco Island, Fla., and The Bakersfield (Calif.) Californian took first-place honors in their respective circulation divisions in the first-ever New Frontier Awards sponsored by Inland Press Association.
The contest honors the best in newspaper online initiatives. It consists of eight categories that recognize newspapers' achievement in producing and disseminating news content using online and new media platforms, and one category that recognizes newspapers' abilities to generate revenue from online initiatives. Entries are judged on creativity and results, along with category-specific criteria. The contest is open to all Web sites run by U.S. newspapers.
The Marco News (www.marconews.com) won for papers with less than 20,000 circulation. Judges noted its beautifully-designed Web site covers its community up close via blogs, Web cams and a detailed calendar. Placing second was The York (Neb.) News-Times (www.yorknewstimes.com). Taking third was the New Castle (Pa.) News (www.ncnewsonline.com).
The Bakersfield (Calif.) Californian (www.bakersfield.com) won for papers over 20,000 circulation. Judges noted its Web site is full of news and interactivity yet easy to navigate. The Naples (Fla.) Daily News (www.naplesnews.com) earned second place. Taking third was the Sioux City (Iowa) Journal (www.siouxcityjournal.com).
Judges were Janice Castro, senior director of Graduate Education and Teaching Excellence, Medill School of Journalism; Richard Roth, senior associate dean, Medill; Mary Nesbitt, managing director of the Readership Institute and Medill associate dean; Vivian Vahlberg, former president of National Press Club, executive director of the Society of Professional Journalists and director of digital media at the Media Management Center at Northwestern University; and Jon Marshall, editor and publisher of the newsgems blog carried by the Society of Professional Journalists.
AND THE WINNERS IN OUR CATEGORY ARE...
Category 6: Best Interactive Online Community
First Place: The Isthmus Daily Page Forum [LINK] (Say Isthmus 10x fast!)
Madison, Wisconsin's The Isthmus has built a powerful online community of literate and opinionated neighbors talking (sometimes arguing) about everything from global and local politics to zoning and transportation issues, digital technology, guitars, entertainment and local art. More than 3500 registered participants have logged upwards of 110,000 posts and thanks to artful moderation, an easy-to-use interface and a light hand at the editorial delete key, there's no sign of a slowdown.
Second Place: Naples (Fla.) Daily News - "Affordable Housing Database" [LINK] (Naples? Sounds sexual!)
Naplesnews.com has cracked one of the most difficult puzzles in online community: how to build a robust community around the serious journalism the news site produces. Since its information-deep Affordable Housing Database launched, thousands of frustrated Floridians have flocked to the site to participate in polls, complain about rising real estate prices, talk about their views and research data on more than 1,600 developments and neighborhoods and 100,000 local real estate transactions.
AND THENNN..
Third Place: Bakersfield Californian -- Bakotopia.com [LINK]
Starting out as an online auction site where Bakersfield residents could buy, sell or recycle any and all goods, Bakotopia has rapidly become an online community site where participants talk about music and entertainment, meet one another, share music downloads and listen to MP3s uploaded by local bands. Because of this transformation into a neighborhood information source, Bakotopia soon will be available as a biweekly print newspaper.
THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR BAKOTOPIANS FOR MAKING BAKOTOPIA A SUCCESS!!
