From the observation and recollections of myself here's a recap in case you missed it!
The Reggae/Surf/Folk/ borderlining that famous Sublime sound, that Southern Cali's Bargain Music brought with them Friday night was greatly welcomed with open arms...or should i say open ears! For lack of a better word it was amazing!
May 25th 2007: Fishlips was a full house Friday night. There was cameras set up everywhere you turned, merchandise tables, the bar top was loaded with people, and it was still early. As people continued to arrive the room continued to grow with life, with not only Bakerfield locals but fans from up and down Cali. Special thanks to the Visalia crowd that came down to support SEED!
Speaking of, SEED was the first to hit the newly enlarged stage. They wasted no time in playing the tunes that would get the crowd on the dance floor. We may be east of the shore but from the begin of this night you could tell we were going to be surrounded by that care free beachy vibe. If its been a while since you've seen these guys than you'll be in for a treat when you catch them next. their set is full of new songs and their individual talents has put this local band on the rise with an overall sense of musical growth. Gary Rinks funky bass lines turn the crowd wild, while Chris Taylor's lyrics and quick changes leave the audience applauding. And we cant forget Joel Henderson, he may be the back man but his intensity to the drums leaves him no where in the shadows.
Next up was Sour Mash Trio, a 3 piece acoustic, alternative almost rockabilly style band that consisted of Drummer: Todd, Vocals: Aaron Jones & UPRIGHT Bass: Kyle Hughes. These guys were troopers. I say this because, despite the fact Aaron was having equipment trouble he knew the show had to continue. After many attempts to fix the problem he ended up leaning on SEED front man Chris Taylor to use his guitar peddles. The show was back in motion. Now that SMT had the chance to walk the streets of Bakersfield, they performed their own rendition of Bucks classic and the crowd went wild! Aaron & Todd are both memebers of Bargain Music which was up next.
BARGAIN MUSIC
Familiar with their music, this was my first time seeig BARGAIN MUSIC live. It was nothing short of incredible. Josh Fischel's voice is like no other & his lyrics are straight from the mind clever. The engery given off is enough to capture your attention and the sound is enough to hold onto it. Its to bad that after all these years this is their final tour. In my opinion this band, like Sublime, has left there impact on music, which will one day influence others. i greatly appreciate the opportunity to have seen and meet these guys, watching musicians entertain without the theatrics. As I began to look around the room i realized we had at least one thing in common, the interest it great music!
