Bakotopian Tekwiz at the Latin Comedy Show at the Nile Theater
Hello all. Friday, May 25th, I rolled down to The Nile Theater to check out the Latin Comedy Show. But don't worry, as a white guy from Myfa (McFarland to you going WTF?), I felt safe going into a hostile environment. I didn't go unloaded though, I invited one of mi chicas to serve as the obligatory deflection of any witty white boy lobs thrown my way, and there were lots. I was even ballsy enough to sit at the table in the very front of The Nile Theater. HAHA, was I in for a night.
David Lopez was our host for the night, stating that he had just returned from Afghanistan to entertain our troops. Being a former Marine, he got brownie points from me for that. He got into a short set about being back in Bakersfield after two or three years and was most appreciative about the crowd that was gathered.
First up was newcomer Lil' Andy. He was welcomed loudly be the crowd. He was probably all of about 5'5", if that, so his set was discussing the advantages and disadvantages of his height. I did sense a tinge of nervousness after some of his jokes fell flat, but being a comedian, he kept going. I felt a little more polish in his act would go a long way. My only other complaint would be more eye contact as you hit your punchlines. His set ended and David Lopez came back up extolling the virtues of "taking one for the team" when your boy scores and you have to get her "friend". You guys know about that.
Next up was Don Hefty. Now here was a guy I could relate with him being a big guy. He got into problems with his size, and had me rolling when he observed that his shirts had more X's than his porn stash. Wearing a 4X shirt...enough said. He got into other situations where his weight caused problems in everyday life. I played crowd pawn because of my size and he had some funny jokes, but I took it in stride knowing what was expected from the white boy in the front row of the crowd. He had even more fun when he realized I was rocking a pink shirt.
Yes everyone, I found a pink 4X Ralph Lauren Polo shirt and I wore it to this show. Screw it, I was having an 80's flashback, lol. I looked good in it and that's it!!!!
Don Hefty finished up his set and that brought back David Lopez with more everyday scenes. My chica and I both decided he kinda looked like Pee Wee Herman, although one of the comics said he looked like Quagmire from "Family Guy". Oooh, tough one.
Fresh from the humidity of Texas was Luis Villasenor, who, when he saw me prop the camera, posed, and then complained how slow the flash was (Matt's camera, I told you fresh batteries). I told him I wanted to see how long he would hold the pose. Being from SouthCentral L.A., he rolled into gang stories and family problems. He wanted to know if I would be his bodyguard because of my size, I said I would if the pay was right...all I can eat quesadilla's, tamale's, and chili rellano's. He did like that comeback. And yes,he took jabs at my now famous shirt. It was all good when he finally saw the girl I was with and she said she picked it out...and she was a Latina. He finished up with more funny things about Latin life, and gave the mic back to David Lopez.
Last up was the headliner DJ Cooch, another big boy who I'm sure I was going to have a few zingers aimed my way. He got rolling my giving a quick reminder about being in Bakersfield before and was glad to come back. He started to mention about his CD that was for sale, then because it was Bakersfield, said screw it and would give them away for free. Starting into his routine, he noticed me and my shirt. Seeing as I was the white guy who's not supposed to know about Latin culture, I was an obvious target.
Let me remind you, my ex-wife of 15 years was Mexican, 2nd generation from Matamoros (next to Brownsville, TX.). I am also a lifelong resident of McFarland, CA. So I know damn near everything about the Latin culture. Like Taco Bell is not real Mexican food, and horchata is about the baddest drink there is, lol.
So back to DJ, he brought it and I took it. A couple times I think I caught him be suprise, but being a great comic, didn't let on. He kept zinging, the audience and I kept laughing, and it was all good. The best one had to be inadvertantly leaving Tabasco sauce, while eating ceviche, on his mouth while providing a needed service to his girl. Ladies, he kissed the other set of lips, so, I'll leave it at that while you cringe.
David Lopez came back up for a final round of introductions and appreciation. The crowd gave a much deserved standing ovation to this quintet of comedians.
Afterwards, they all met in the lobby to talk to everyone, sign autographs, and take pictures. They also gave away cd's and T-shirts.
Now being a constant pimp of any and all things Bakotopia.com, I showed them the latest issue of the Bakotopia magazine, gave them a quick rundown of what it entailed, and invited them the next time they come to Bakersfield, give Matt a call for an interview. One of the highlight's of my night was after talking to DJ about Carlos and Joseph Mencia, he got on the phone and called Joseph and let me and a few in the crowd talk to him.
Special thank to Klark Garl, Frank Kruz, and the Nile Theater Crew for the excellent presentation.
All I can say now is, can't wait until they show up again.
