Getting the game started
Bakersfield Blitz Girlz gives inside glimpse to their world

The Bakersfield Blitz Girlz don't mind the adulation.
Just be nice, OK?
Shaking their way into the hearts of Blitz football fans at every game, these girls understand the power they possess.
But don't be misled.
The hypnotic spell they may put fans under is just another day at the office for these gals in uniform.
“There are a lot of stereotypes spread about people like us,” said second-year Blitz dancer, Marissa Martin, 23. “Once people meet us, they see how hard we work and start thinking differently.”
Now in their fifth year of bringing another level of excitement to the arena football team, Blitz (4-7,) the dance squad is a group of 13 confident lovelies, each with enough rhythm and magnetism to soothe the savage beast or in this case, sports fan.
“Sometimes at games, some of the guys can get creepy,” said veteran Blitz Girl Claudia Rodriguez, 23, who also recognizes the image they portray to male fans can often bring out the bizarre, especially in the heat of the game.
Just ask them.
“One time I got flowers and chocolates on Valentine's Day delivered to my work from a fan,” said dancer Christine Martinez, 23, who also admitted to keeping it a secret from her boyfriend, for fear of extreme jealousy that comes with being an object of desire for more than a couple horny guys in the arena. “There was a card that said how much he loved watching me at work and games. I didn't know what to say…”
Yikes!
But Martinez, like the others, understands it comes with territory.
Added Rodriguez, “It's kind of hard to deal with sometimes, but you have to carry yourself well, smile, and be professional.”
Besides the small army of mildly obsessed fans and gifts the team has amassed, another interesting discovery in conversation was finding out the various occupations they hold off the field. TV producer, college student, live-in nanny, mom…
So, are these the faces of today's Alpha 20-something females?
What happened to the bouncy, hyperactive pom-pom girls from movies like “Grease” and “Porky's”?
“We're not a bunch of airheads and bimbos,” proclaimed Blitz Girl team coach, Taryn Green, 22. “We're all very confident and care about ourselves.”
Not to be outdone by the coach, next came the standardized answer for which all people in position of power, or lack of, go to when they're at a loss for words (but all forgiven in this case because the crew had just finished rehearsal and they were exhausted and ready to leave.)
“I want to be a positive role model for kids,” said Martin sincerely, but predictably, “to show that you can be whatever you want as long as your heart and mind are in it.”
Sure, we've all heard the “role model” speech from athletes and artists (no offense Marissa), but what about the other side of the game, where appearance is everything, plus the unavoidable “sex” factor?
I mean, who doesn't look forward to seeing cheerleaders in all their tight-fitting glory, at least from the guy’s perspective? And I am sure there’s plenty of women in the audience telling themselves, “Shoot! I am hitting the gym tomorrow so I can get a fit-and-trim bod and look hot, too!)
“Being sexy is fun,” admitted Amber Estrada, 19, one of the team's younger members.
Added Martinez, “Every girl likes attention. (But) there are boundaries that must be respected between us and our fans.”
If you yourself are a fan of the Blitz Girlz, see ya at the next game, and if you think your fandom is freaky, don't feel bad…
“We have the best fans and they are appreciated,” said Martinez.
