The second annual Latin rock jam ends summer on a spicy note at the Greek in LA, Sept. 15th!

There is no border wall high enough to stop rock and roll.

Need proof? Check out the Antidoto dia de Indepencia music festival happening on Sept. 15 at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles.

Billed as a concert in celebration of Mexican Independence Day weekend, the second annual gathering of Roc en Espanol’s brightest and biggest names promises an all day cultural experience through music - and everyone’s invited to the party!

“It’s a show for everybody, it doesn’t matter what language or color you are,” said Everardo Garcia, 22, trumpet player for East LA’s Upground, one of the bands featured at the festival. “I’m expecting a lot of mixed cultures and diversity with different people from all over.”

In addition to the Latin skalsa sound of Upground, co-headliners Los Amigos Invisibles (Venezuela) and Julieta Venegas (Mexico) are sure to rattle the legendary Greek with more partying than spring break in Cabo!

Also scheduled to appear during the six hour, two stage desmadre (jam) of sound and color are Jumbo, Allison, Inbox, also from Mexico, Lucybell from Chile, and Volumen Cero from Los Angeles - all bands very popular in a genre that continues to produce universal grooves for people in Latin America as well as Bakersfield.

Upground’s Garcia, whose mother and extended family reside in Bakersfield, makes the trip through the mountains from time to time to visit and occasionally help out at El Paraiso, one of Bakersfield’s most well known catering trucks in SW Bako.

“I visit Bakersfield every once in awhile to see my mom, grandfather, and my uncle,” said Garcia.

“Upground was supposed to play in Bakersfield one time, but when we got here there was no sound system at the venue,” he laughed.

It’s easy to laugh about it NOW.

Upground have gone from stage jumping rude boys, to bona fide princes in the rockero kingdom, after winning the Sprint Battle of the Bands in 2006, a three stage competition that landed them a spot on the second stage at last year’s Antidoto.

This time, they’re on the Greek main stage at this year’s festival with a hot CD - “Feel The Vibe” - more touring, prime opening slots, and an upcoming new single produced by Wil-Dog Abers, bassist for Ozomatli.

The Abers produced track, “The Starting Line,” will soon be featured on SiTv, a cable channel that features Latino themed programming in English.

After this year’s Antidoto festival, Upground plans on making another trek Back to Bakersfield to show the city a good time, but for now Garcia and the band are focusing on the big show at The Greek, Sept. 15.

“Everybody who comes to the show will be dancing the whole time.”
