I remember watching my first UFC fight with an old girlfriend – so romantic.

One of my friends turned me onto a Pay-Per-View special, featuring Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock – two of the biggest stars of this new form of seriously violent sport.

As much as I enjoy watching a good boxing match, I wasn’t prepared for what I saw. These guys were beating the living crap out of each other!

Before each match, there’s a short biography about each fighter, complete with photo montage, serious looks and heavy metal soundtrack - very “No Fear.”

“Let’s get it on!” yells the ref, and the two go at it like two pit bulls at a Michael Vick party.

What impressed me the most is how internationally popular these fighters are.

Fighter Ken Shamrock has his own cartoon in Japan, and the Gracie’s are Brazil’s first family of Jiu-Jitsu. Each fighter has their own unique personality, and like professional wrestling, there are a lot more where they came from.

Names like – Dan “The Beast” Severin, “Tank” Abbott, and even more Shamrock’s and Gracie’s to follow, the world of the Ultimate Fighting Championship is booming like a Chuck Norris roundhouse.

Bakersfield even has roots in the UFC.

One of the sports biggest fighters, Tito Ortiz, is a former CSUB wrestler who boasts porn queen Jenna Jameson as his girlfriend. I’m sure it must be tough grappling with her.

Now, we have another Bakersfield WEC fighter on the rise – Brian Cobb, our cover story in this issue of Bakotopia, written by Jackie Gibson. Hit by hit, Jackie takes you in and out of the ring to feel the pain and glory.
