Bakotopia’s guide to style

By Eric Duhart, Bakotopia.com staff

Fashion wasn’t what you wore someplace anymore; it was the whole reason for going. - Andy Warhol

Most people I know from out of town usually say the same thing when they come here: “Wow, Bakersfield people are really fashionable."

Of course, this statement is dripping with sarcasm. Their snap judgment may have to do with the perception that Bakersfield is a cowboy town, and that all we do is sit on the bed of our trucks drinking beer. That may true for some people, but not all.

Bakersfield is like walking through the halls of a high school in a John Hughes movie. There are a variety of styles, ranging from punk, to preppy, to rock-a-billy, to those people who take too much time to look like they just woke up. The best part about it is that you can witness this couture clash in one sitting at the mall.

I know there are some of you reading this saying you don’t care about fashion or what you wear. But if you didn’t care you wouldn’t have chosen what to wear this morning on your way to pick up the latest issue of Bakotopia. Or maybe you’re just lost when it comes to what to wear. But you’re in luck now, because on the following pages you’ll be introduced to many different looks brought to you by some the hippest local boutiques in town.

So take notes, take my advice, and prove the critics wrong!

Please support local business!!

Fashion is like waking up in the morning. It can become a success or maybe you rolled over to the wrong side. Anybody can pick up an American Apperal shirt and some Lucky jeans, but can you actually feel good inthem? You have to make it your own, And yes attitude is key to your success. Yes Bakersfield is finally waking up from the long slumber of tradition. However remember not to stay comfortable with what people want you to wear, Make it your own.
