Sylvia reminds us how to love…
By Helen Acosta
When I was 14 years old I came home from school one day to find my yellow lab, Rosemary, on the floor in the middle of my bed. With white puffs of fluff and bent box springs scattered everywhere she was grinning triumphantly from ear-to-ear.
Less than 6 months ago I came home to find that the girdle I had bought for my sister’s wedding the previous day and absentmindedly left on the kitchen table was in shreds all over the living room. My rottie lab pup, Chester, had thoughtfully saved me from the constricted spandex and lycra torture the rest of the wedding party experienced on that joyous day. And yes, he was just as pleased with himself as Rosemary had been 23 years earlier!
So why do we love these mischief making machines so much? Any dog person will tell you it is because a dog is sweetened condensed love.
In this month’s production of Sylvia at Bakersfield Community Theatre, Greg, a lonely empty-nesting husband, finds the sweetened condensed love he needs to bring him back to life again. Greg brings Sylvia, a sweet lost labradoodle, home-- much to the chagrin of his wife, Kate. Kate has raised her children and their dogs. She now has a fulfilling career and she has re-connected with old friends in the City. There is no room in her life for a dog and Greg won’t get rid of Sylvia. Will the marriage last?
Written by AR Gurney, the author of The Love Letters, this semi-autobiographical romantic comedy shares an empty nester's path back to the love of his life when a maddeningly sweet dog finds the key to unlock his guarded and long buried heart.
The cast of fRed, David Jackson, Dawn Tyack and Jennie Babcock bring this funny and heart-tugging comedy to life. The beautiful mural of the New York skyline painted on the back wall by local artist, Rusty Hatfield, intensifies the experience and gives the show a professional edge.
If you have ever loved a dog-- you will love Sylvia.
If you have ever hated a dog-- you will love Sylvia.
If you have ever rekindled a love you thought was lost--you will love Sylvia.
Funny, raw, honest, heartwarming--Sylvia is a can't-miss show!
