My Name Is Julie - BC Student?
Re-discovering college perks via Shakespeare. Part of Bakotopia's 'Campus Buzz / College Stories' series

It happened oddly enough.

I had never in my life taken a class at a community college. I used to sell text books to the professors at community colleges, but I never took a class there.

I went from high school to University of the Pacific.  After completing the preferred eight semesters - including one at the United Nations - and a couple winter terms later, I had my bachelor's degree in International Relations.

And then last May, Amy Hall asked me why I hadn't auditioned for the Kern Shakespeare Festival.

(Amy Hall)

“It seems so much like something you, of all people, would do,” she said.

I mumbled something about not knowing if I had the time and the usual excuses thespians with confidence issues say, and midway between the excuses and the end of that day, I had talked myself into auditioning.

I didn’t realize that auditioning meant I would also need to enroll as a BC student.

I got all worried and worked up that they would somehow kick me out of “Troilus and Cressida” if the women at the front counter could smell the scent of “bachelor’s degree already” on my skin.

I was down to the absolute deadline when I nervously handed my enrollment form to the admissions clerk.

She took it, entered some stuff on the computer and gave it back to me with something else stapled to it.

“And, um... I am not really a student here.”

“You are now.”

“Ummm, but I don't have a student ID number or anything...”

“You do now, look at the paper,” she said and smiled angelically.

Several days later I paid my fees, which made my student status officially official.

I went to yet another clerk and asked, “What’s this $12 health fee all about?”

The clerk’s eyes lit up and she explained I could get medicine there - for free. I could see a doctor there - for free. It felt like a medical candy store - for free!

I have Kaiser, but who needs that when I can go to the BC Medical “Free Candy Free Store” for free!

The Kern Shakespeare Festival ended Saturday night and I stood at the cast party, talking to fellow Bakotopian and BC Student, Samantha Gonzales.

“I’m thinking of taking an art class this spring,” I told Sam. “I just can’t get enough of this whole being a student again thing. I mean, I considered math ... but no. Maybe figure drawing or something.”

Sam nodded in agreement. We might even take something together.

Next thing you know I will be wearing a complete BC wardrobe and attending all the rallies and stuff. Speaking of which, I never did get my free homecoming T-shirt last week.

Maybe I’ll walk over to campus tomorrow and see if there are any leftovers. And maybe I’ll feel a headache coming on and I will go get some Tylenol at the Health Center. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll visit the library. Maybe, I’m not sure.

Yeah, I like this whole “being a student” way more than I probably should.
