I'm still paying back my school loan...
It's the

Newsletter 'College Buzz' Edition!
My college story is a lengthy one filled with indecision, panic, dropping out, re-entry and ultimately glory (for me at least.)
When I graduated from McFarland High School I went straight to the dorms of BC as a music major. I signed up for classes and my parents helped me out with money. That’s where my adventure began, and what a tale it is.
Like many of you current students or alumni reading this issue of Bakotopia, making decisions and devising a survival plan is an important part of everyday life.
Will I find a parking space today? I forgot my book! I can’t be late for work! Will my financial check show up on time? I’m hungover, I don’t wanna go to class!
Yes, these are the trials of life we all must face as students of higher learning. My best memories of college are being a member of every music group on campus - the marching band, jazz band, concert band, steel drum band. If there was an opening, you’d find me in the ranks.
After my first two semesters at BC, I ended up changing my major to “undeclared,” graduating with an AA, and transferring to CSUB not knowing what I wanted to do with myself. I continued playing music on campus, and found out they had started a communications program at CSUB. It was a fairly new program, but with the help of one of my mentors, Judith Pratt being one, I finally felt a sense of direction. Music and performing was my first love, but the entertainment business was a close second. I had to figure out a way to bridge the two, and in the process create a career path.
I ended up dropping out for about 12 years, but my conscience, parents, professors, and valley fever kept telling me to “Go back and finish your degree, Matt.”
So I did. I called my old professors who were more than happy to help me get on track. My buddy Frank Ramirez at CSUB’s financial aid department re-educated me on the current forms, and Priscilla Long, the best school advisor in the world, showed me how to finish in a year and half! It can be that easy, if you take the time to plan accordingly.
So, read on my dear students! Do not fear the unknown - just get off you're rear and make your life happen! School is back in session!
